Hello Friends,.
Alberto here with my weekly stroll and purrrusal of the information highway to bring you awesome feline stuff. Here are this week’s picks, enjoy!

Is Bubble Wrap The New Cardboard Box? – Cheezeburger.com

bubblewrapvsbox

In the humble opinion of this feline, this is a very serious and important debate. Every human and feline knows the affection we have for boxes but now there seems to be a replacement. I am not sure what side of this debate I support and would welcome some further comment from my feline readers.

Britain Battles Russia to be Crowned Winner of the World’s Best Cat – Mirror UK

prod-mowgleaves-stonhenge1

Mowgleaves Stonhenge is the cat from London

I make it a point to stay completely a-purrlitical (well, except when my brother Oliver runs for Purresident of the Kitty Kat Party) and I don’t like reporting on international paw-liticks either but this article did capture my attention. The lines of division are drawn between the finalists  Mowgleaves Stonehenge, the Anglo-American feline from London and his competition Rumfold Such a Flirt Shu-Ko from Moscow.

The world of cat shows is full of hissing and spitting and other sorts of drama and this tell-all article shows what a soap opera life can be for the purry pedigreed. Makes me happy that I’m a shelter cat!

Cats vs Drone-Rickey.org

gray cat swatting a droneI’ve heard the humans talking about this flying thingy’s called drones. Some of the human’s friends spend quite a bit of time piloting the things. In my humble opinion, if you’re going to have something that flys around you should give your cat the opportunity to swat it. Now some folks have said this isn’t the safest thing so before you go out and start swatting these droney-things, have your humans check it out first!

Cats at Work – Cheeseburger.com

If you read my regular Wednesday column,. you’ll know I can never resist featuring anything that has to do with working cats. This album of working cats features beautiful black and white photos of my gainfully employed feline friends. Enjoy!

Hello Friends,
It’s that time of the week when I share some of my favorite web stories about or for felines.

Newlyweds, their Amazing Cat & Their Cross Country Adventures – I Heart Cats

honeymoon couple treavel to national parks with their black and white cat

As we move toward Valentine’s Day, I thought a story about true human and feline love would be a great idea, and what’s more romantic than Cees and Madison Hofman and their kitten Vladimir spending their first year of wedded bliss on the road, exploring all 59 U.S. National Parks?

The couple said their goal was to make their furry family member the “cutest, coolest, smartest, best adventure kitty out there.” Hats off to Vladimir who is not only leash trained but clicker trained as well. You go Vlad! You can follow Vladimir and his humans on Instagram

Roomba Cats and Superbowl Ads – Ad Week

tabby cat riding a roombaThe female human does consulting and a lot of business with the company GoDaddy.com. I can wholeheartedly recommend this company as they are doing roomba-cat Superbowl ads this year. The female human and I think the male human should buy her a roomba and I have volunteered to pilot it. Take a sneak peek at one of the ads.

Hong Kong Shop Cats Help Business – The Daily Mail

You know I just can’t let a Wednesday go by without posting something about working cats. This week, I found a story about a photographer who spent a year taking pictures of Hong Kong’s shop cats.  And the folks in Hong Kong know a thing or two about felines, they consider their shop cats fortunate and they acknowledge that their furry coworkers help bring in customers to their stores.

Here’s to all the shop kitties in Hong Kong and the rest of the world.

Bubble Bowl Chair for Cats – Metro UK

black and white cat in clear feline bubble chairFurniture for cats is nothing new. I can tell you our humans spend a lot of cash on feline furnishings for our home. What is new about this item is that this chair is comfortable for cats and fun for humans as well. You know we like to slink into odd-shaped items and contort our lithe bodies into amazing forms. This chair allows us to do this and, since it’s a clear blubble, the humans get the full, entertaining effect of our antics.  The female human was ready to order one for the Tribe of Five, but it’s on something called “Kickstarter” and the donation amounts are in Hong Kong dollars. As soon as she figures out how to do this, I’ll let you know.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Cats & Cat Moms from Etsy-Melissa’s Mochas, Mysteries and Meows

Valentine’s Day, the day to show love between humans and felines is coming soon. I found some wonderful gift ideas, gifts the humans can buy for their fur kids and gifts the fur kids can give their humans (as long as one of the humans helps them with ordering and paying!)  I love the catnip kickers because soft, long catnip filled toys that I can grab and kick with my back legs are my faves.  The female human liked all the ideas but, since she never met a piece of jewelry she didn’t like, she especially liked the cat pendant (and the fact that it looks a bit like my brother Oliver). Don’t forget to show your humans some extra love on Valentines Day!

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 1/18/17

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines

Hello Friends,
Alberto here. It’s time for me to share my favorite feline tidbits-enjoy!

The Expanse” Season One Re-cat,  The Verge

cat with sci fi costume onSurely you all know by now that cats rule the internet. We pop up in some of the most unusual places and, in this case felines are featured in a season recat of the Sci Fi Series, The Verge.  Disclaimer, if you start watching season 2, you will not see Julie Meow or some of the other characters depicted in this re-cat.

Sparkle Cat – Summer’s Wardrobe

sparklecatoutfitsOk, I admit it, I am a HUGE fan of Summer the Somali cat (also known as Sparkle Cat). I’m not usually a fan boy but I mean, look at her, she’s GORGEOUS!  The female human even got to meet her at BlogPaws last May. I am in the process of launching a campaign for the female human to take me to BlogPaws this May but she says it’s much to far from our far north home. Anyway, as much as I hate when the humans dress me up, Summer is one of those fantastic felines who like dress up and who look purrrrrfectly beautiful. Meows and waves to Summer (and this fan boy would love a purrrsonalized photo from his favorite star)

The Life of a Service Cat – Deziz World

ragdoll service catI have some good feline buddies on the World Wide Web. Two that I correspond with frequently are Dezi and Raena from Deziz World. Now we’ve discussed many things but one thing my friends never told me was that they are service cats. There are many cats with jobs but Dezi and Raena work 24/7. My friends are very talented and they feature great information about service cats, how to find them, train them, etc. Stroll on over there and when you do, tell them “Hi” from their buddy Alberto!

Career Cats Hold Jobs – The Virginia Gazette
black and white cat has a job at a feed storeIf you are a regular reader of my weekly mewsings, you know I love featuring articles about cats with jobs. It’s not just that I want the world to know how smart and capable we are, I love the humans who have figured out that cats who are not as fortunate as The Tribe of Five and others can still find safety, a home, regular meals and important work.  There are some wonderful humans at the Heritage Humane Society who founded the Career Cat Program. You can read about Spike who was hired at Jamestown Feed and Seed and about this great feline employment program. I sure wish the female human would look into starting a feline employment agency where we live!

Walk Through the Web, Wed. 1/11/17

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines

Hi Folks,
I’ve finally returned to my weekly Wednesday purrrrusings of the web for all things feline. I did enjoy my holiday hiatus but it’s good to get back to work. So without further ado, here are my picks for the week!
Your Friend,
img_1067

The Midwife Cat

orange and white cat massages goat giving birthIf you read my mewsings, you know that I love to talk about cats with jobs, especially unusual jobs and this cat’s job is unusual, believe me.  Pretty Boy aka #979 Operation Fancy Free  cat rescue, out of Jackson County WV, TNR program) lives in Virginia  and can be seen in a video, massaging and comforting Copper, the goat who was giving birth.
I’m wondering if Copper the goat is going to name Pretty Boy as Godfather to the new arrivals.

Detective Cat is on the Job

cartoon police cat
My human is in the process of writing a mystery story that features two felines (one, I am proud to say is modeled after me). Needless to say, when I saw this article about a cat who got a suspect busted, I let my human know. This cat helped “rat out” a suspect. Way to go Officer Feline

A REAL Cat Burglar

orange cat gets locked in banik
While I’m talking about felines and the law, there’s an interesting story about a true cat burglar. Seems this feline got himself locked inside a British bank overnight. I must say, if I were gong to be a cat burglar, I’d get myself locked into a dairy or a tuna factory, I certainly wouldn’t sit at the door so everyone could make fun of me on Twitter!

TRAKZ – A Feline and Canine Version of Fitbit

TRAKZ a fitbit gps for cats and dogsNow if you’re concerned that your feline may have criminal tendencies like the British cat burglar, you may want to check out this item that has GPS to track your furry friend and track their whereabouts and how much they are eating. Our 16-pound, food loving Alpha Tucker was horrified when he heard about the Trakz and threatened my with severe bodily harm if I let the humans know about it.

Cats Giving Blood

cat in a nurse costume next to a give blood sign
I have never heard of cats giving blood but they do. Evidently there is a high demand for feline transfusions in Western Australia and Murdoch University’s animal hospital has set up a community blood donor program where cats can donate between three to five times per year. While I admire this noble act on the part of Australian felines, I think I’ll take a pass…but then again if I could save another feline life by doing it, I would have to consider it.

Cats in Hats

a ginger cat wearing a hat made from his own hairAnd now for something a little silly…cats in hats.  Evidently some humans have waaaayyyy to much time on their hands and this seems to be the case for Japanese photographer Ryo Yamazaki, who makes hats ,,,,,from the hair his cats shed. I must say I am still trying to figure out if this is a legit feline fashion statement or a dismal failure, I’ll let you make up your own minds.

The Felines Opine On 2016

tukcrownTucker Opines

Well, I must say, 2016 was fairly much like 2015. I retained my lofty position on the red chair in the living room, received treats regularly and even strolled (under human supervision) on the upstairs deck.

The “little guys” as we call them continued to be annoying and always  up to  some kitten shenanigans  but they do recognize my authority as the Alpha of The Tribe of Five and now that they’re just over a year, they are settling down a bit.

And they are making themselves useful. Oliver has decided he likes my prescription food and this is quite convenient for me.. Each morning, when the female human comes out of the bedroom, Oliver races down the hallway and does a little dance by the food bowl. The female human obediently goes to the pantry in the laundry room, grabs the food and fills both of our bowls. Having Oliver around is never having to say, “I’m hungry”.

I’m looking forward to another relaxing year as Alpha as I take up my post on the red chair (or, as the humans refer to it, the “throne”), watch the household antics of Oliver and Alberto, receive my treats and have a perpetually full food bowl.

Jasmine Opines

Siamese cat Jasmine in fake nose and glassesWell, I am still living in the human’s bedroom but things have progressed. If you’re wondering why I live in the bedroom, you can read about it in Amelia’s story.

There have been some breakthroughs in 2016. The humans invite Lily into the bedroom frequently in the evenings and things are progressing enough that  I will actually come out from under the bed when she’s there (although sometimes she forgets she’s supposed to show me deference and chases after me, resulting in a loud a hissy fit and a big “fluffy tail”).. The female human is also leaving the bedroom door open periodically (when she can watch Lily and make sure she doesn’t waltz in.)  I am optimistic about the future.

Siamese cat sitting at a snowy windowThere is much in my two-room environment to keep me interested, the automatic red dot thingy Siamese cat sitting oi chair in front of widow in winterthat twirls and spins and throws red dots down the hallway, huge windows and wide window ledges that look out to the woods around the house.  I often have visitors come by. Some are felines, some are birds, some are squirrels and there is the occasional raccoon as well.

My brother Tucker comes and visits and sleeps overnight, as does Oliver and Alberto.  Tucker sleeps in one of the cushy cat beds but  Alberto and Oliver are a bit disruptive so they end up being escorted out of the room at some time in the wee hours.

The female human showed me that you don’t have to go out to do good work for pets. She and her sister founded a lost pet social media organization for our area and many pets have been reunited with their families thanks to all the good people who help.

All in all, it’s been a good year and much more interesting than last year. The female human told me that when I write my year end comments for 2017, she hopes I’ll be telling you how I roam around the house again.

Lily Opines

cat with New Years hat and glassesIt’s been a good year. I’ve been in the human’s bedroom many times and I’m thinking Jasmine and I may be friends after all (as long as I don’t forget myself and  chase her).

I have a nice routine with the female human. Each evening after she finishes making dinner, she goes downstairs and gets a pail full of cat food. She calls this “junk food” and won’t let us eat it on a regular basis, but she does give Alberto and I a few bits. If Tucker deigns to sashay down the stairs to join us, he gets a few pieces too. She then takes the pail and puts the food down on the patio for our masked friends. One of them comes with her little masked babies and I like to sit by the sliding glass doors and chat with them about woodland life versus indoor life. Seems to me I have the better deal.

The female human’s story “All My Children Wear Fur Coats” was published in February in the newest Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s soul book. This experience made her even more interested in writing about and for cats (it’s because of this that she is our purrrrsonal assistant and types for us in this blog). She was even on several radio shows talking about the fabulous Tribe of Five and is now working on something she refers to as a “cozy mystery” that has two cats as main characters (I hope one of them is me).

This month was a bit stressful. Some of the human’s relatives visited, and, although I am sure they are wonderful people, I did not want to be bothered so I spent the time downstairs, burrowed under the sofa cover. The Tribe of Five produced a manual for guests who visit homes with felines, you may want to ensure your humans read this.

It’s been a purrfectly wonderful  year and I look forward to a purrfectly wonderful 2017 as well.

Oliver Opines

Black and white cat with new years mask and hatI would say that I probably had the most exciting year as I threw my hat in the ring as the Kitty Cat Party cat-i-date for purresident. My running mate, Olive, from Three Chatty Cats, and I even sent our human to a conference called Blogpaws with campaign buttons to spread the word about our platform.

Olive and I presented a complete platform only to find that the Today Show featured another feline who was running and never even mentioned my name so I had to take them to task, sheesh, what’s a cat got to do to get some press coverage?

Sadly, my running mate and I did not win but this does black and white kitten runs for presidentnot mean that I have abandoned all my purrlitical aspirations. I have been reading about cats that are mayors, customs officials and even a Chief Mouser for the British Cabinet.  Now that I have some experience, I’m thinking I might just be successful at this purrlitical thing.

No matter what I decide to do in 2017, it will be a great year and I look forward to opining all about it.

Alberto Opines

Siamese cat in bag wearing party hatIt was a great year. I was the official spokes-purrson for the Kitty Cat Pawty campaign and I quite enjoyed all the attention.  Even though my brother Oliver didn’t win, he told me there would be a job for me if he ever entered the purrlitical arena again.

Things in the spring and summer were grand. The humans bought us a portable catio and we all enjoyed
bird and squirrel watching on the front porch and upstairs deck in complete safety. Ever since the female human took a class about the concept of “Fearless” cat raising, she’s made sure our home is as fear free as possible.

The next exciting thing I experienced was being able to Siamese ca walking on leash in the gardenstroll through the front garden with a harness and leash. I quite enjoy myself when the female human takes me out to explore.

I had fun with the male human showing him how to pluck the string things on his guitar, we made some lovely mewsic together

img_2553Fall was a bit dicey. First the humans tried to put some ridiculous thing on me that they called a “dinosaur costume”. I was having none of it and, as you can see by my expression, I conveyed my unhappiness quite clearly.

Then, the female human came out into the living room one night made up like a feline. I was completely gobsmacked (as my British moggie friends would say). At first I was freaked out. Was she going through some strange human to feline transformation? If she was transforming into a cat, who would take over all the things she does for us? (I don’t trust siamese cat and woman with cat ears and cat make-upthe male human to do this). Once I calmed down and figured out she was not cat-morphing I became a bit annoyed. Was she mocking us? It was a terrible “faux paws”  and one, I am fairly certain, the female human will not repeat.

As I lounge by the fire, I am thinking what a happy cat I am and I think 2017 will be even better.

A final note from the #TribeOfFive

Thanks to all our friends out there in the blogosphere. We love the notes we receive from other felines (and other non-feline creatures…and even humans)  and we look forward to entertaining and enlightening you all from our little corner of the world in 2017.

Purrs & Meows,
Tucker, Jasmine, Lily, Alberto & Oliver

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 11/30

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines

Hello Friends, Furry and Otherwise,

It’s that time again where I wander along the Internet Highway and choose the feline themed items that have captured my fancy.  With one notable and heartwarming exception, this week is an homage to working felines. As a working feline myself, I am always fascinated by other cats who have jobs.

So, sit back and enjoy this weeks picks.

Your Friend,

Human proposes at cat adoption center – Somee Cards

gray kitten at shelter with tag that says will you marry meI’m including this one for all you hopeless romantics. This guy just hit it out of the park and I had a little chat with the male human and told him he could have really upped his game with the female human had he proposed to her this way! And for those of you who are concerned, yes, the lady did go home with a ring…..and a kitten!

Rusik, the caviar-sniffing police cat – Life With Cats

russian police cat Rusik sniffs out caviar

Cat the policeman.

As I mentioned, I am always interested in career cats and this is the first police cat I’ve ever heard of. This is a “rags to riches” story that will make the most grumpy feline smile.

Seems Rusik was a stray who was adopted by the customs guards at a checkpoint near the Caspian Sea. One of the most expensive and sought after items in Russia is caviar and, as it turns out, Rusik proved to be quite adept at smelling it-on smugglers. His talents far outshone the police canines and he became top cat at customs.

Sadly, his great talent led to his demise but while he was with us, he was a cat of extraordinary ability.  Покойся с миром (rest in peace) my Russian friend.

Hoodie, Chief Mouser, Newburgh Brewing Company – Catster

tabby cat is chief mouser at breweryThose of you who follow my Wednesday web wanderings know I’ve written about a brewery cat before and it seems as though these brewery jobs are becoming a “thing”. Hoodie works the night shift and lest you think she restricts her job description to mouser only, she is quite talented. She often photobombs the brewery Instagram account and the brewery’s Facebook page. Hoodie has a pretty purrrrfect life, chasing mice, napping on the desk or comfy sofa in the office and sometimes sneaking into the tasting room where snacks can be found. Cheers Hoodie!

From Stray to Chief Mouser at British Foreign Affairs Office – Cattime

tuxedo cat works at the British Foreign OfficeWell, there are jobs and then there are JOBS, like important government jobs and this former stray has quite the cushy career. This stately feline has a name that matches his impurrrtant duties, Palmerston. The name comes from Prime Minister Viscount Palmerston, a foreign secretary who also served as Prime Minister almost 200 years ago.
When I told my brother, Oliver about Palmerston, Oliver was quite interested. After his recent failed cat-i-dacy for Purresident, he felt that perhaps there was still a glimmer of hope for some sort of purrlitical career. You can wander over to FelineOpines.com and read about Oliver’s campaign and the Kitty Cat Party.

Oliver’s Concession Speech

img_1390Dear Friends,
While I always thought getting a kitten into the White House was a bit of a stretch, my running mate Olive, from Three Chatty Cats and I were always hopeful. We do hope that there will be a “First Feline” in Washington who will take our needs and concerns under advisement.

The Kitty Cat Party will rise again and in the meantime, untitledthanks for your support and today, be sure and thank a veteran for their service!

Your Friend,
Oliver

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines

Well hello friends, furry and otherwise,
I hope you enjoy my selections this week, you’ll meet some interesting felines and learn about a product that will revolutionize the cocktail hour in every home.

And don’t forget, if you have a great story you’d like me to share on my  Walk Through the Web Wednesday segments, just give me a meow and leave a comment.

Love Meow – Jack the Store Cat

jakethestorecatxThe owners of a wine store met a feline and thought they would find him a home. The feline, named Jake, had other ideas. He loved the store so much, he’s now the “Meow-an-ager”. Now, before you get on your high horse and decry the fact that this cat has a job, it was his choice and Jake holds court at his store, seeing his admiring public (many bearing gifts) on a daily basis. Two paws up for Jake who landed himself a cushy life.

The Daily Mail – Cat Wine

gray cat next to a bottle of cat wineWhile I’m on the subject of wine….Jake might recommend these libations to his feline customers. Cats can choose from a nice Pinot-Mewo or a MosCATo from Apollo Peak.  If you think this is a joke, you’re partly correct. That’s how the whole idea started but now the wine is sold world-wide. And before  you worry that this is not a good idea for felines, the creator of Cat Wine used to work in the pet food industry so he understands the fine feline palate.
Can’t wait for the weekend when the humans and I can share a cocktail.

The Animal Rescue Site – Jingles the Cat Runs a Colorado Town

a gray cat that works in True value hardware in Crested Butte, ColoradoWhen you visit the True Value hardware store in Crested Butte, Colorado you may meet Jingles surveying his domain. Technically,. Jingles is a working cat but his job description is much more lofty than “store employee”. His influence in the community is such that his birthday has been declared a holiday. Way to go Jingles!

Traveling Cats – The Cat From Petra (Jordan)

orange tabby guards the ancient city of PetraI’ve heard of shop cats, library cats, railroad station cats and even felines with political positions but I’ve never heard of a cat that guards an ancient and important place, until I heard about an orange Tabby who guards the ancient pink city of Petra in Jordan. The folks from Far Away At Home met this fine fellow on a trip there. Take a look at his photo, I think he has sort of a mystical look that’s perfect for guarding ancient relics.
