Oliver Opines on Family and Spring in Friendly Fill Ins #98

Hi Folks,

black and white cat eating wheat grassOliver here, just chillin’ and enjoying one of my favorite treats, wheat grass, while I purruse the neighborhood. We’re still waiting for spring at our house but the good news is almost half the snow is gone from the front yard!

I hope you enjoy this week’s fill ins and as always, you can go to McGuffy’s Reader and join the blog hop or join it at our friends blog 15andmeowing. Or, if you’re so inclined, you can leave your fill in answers in the comment section of this post. We love to have our friends meow at us!
Purrs & Head Bonks,

black and white cat Oliver

Here are the fill in questions:

1. I am the _________________ in my family.
2. I have __________________ sibling(s).
3. I am looking forward to                            this Spring.

4. The first sign of Spring this year was                      .

Here are my answers:

1.I am the most heat loving cat in my family . Whenever the humans look for me, they first check all the floor heat vents. They call me a “heat hog” as I’ll block a vent until my fur is so warm it’s almost on fire. And, speaking of fire, the fireplace is one of my favorite spots. Here is a photo of me blocking the vent under the kitchen sink.

img_2811

2.I have five siblings. Actually only one is a blood relative and that’s Alberto my brother (I know, we don’t look anything alike) but the other three tribe members are adopted siblings and we’re all a happy family.

img_1196

3.I am looking forward to butterfly chasing this spring. Our house has big windows and there are always birds and butterflies fluttering around. The Female Human managed to capture one of my fierce butterfly hunts from last summer.

4.The first sign of spring this year was not yet seen. Dude, we still have snow in the yard and not one robin has flown past our windows! Spring will take a bit longer in our neck of the woods. In the meantime, I’m hunkering down and staying cozy.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday..a day late 3/8

546cd8fc-571d-40dc-9c00-c8eb9b6fbc2a-180-00000000e573caec

Hello Friends,
So, my purrsonal assistant allowed herself to get a bit behind and my Wednesday deadline came and went with no blog post. She is redeeming herself (a bit) by getting my Wednesday Web Walk posted today but I guess better late than never!
I hope you enjoy this week;s wanderings,
Purrs & Head Bonks,
Siamese cat with blue eyes

I Don’t Normally Get Purrlitical but…..

One of the reasons my weekly Wednesday wanderings were late is because the female human was busy making this little video for a local candidate. There are no purrlitical parties mentioned so, since I deemed this a non-partisan video I thought I would share it. This candidate has a canine in the forefront of his campaign but it seems like he is garnering a feline constituency.

Man Quits His Job and Travels Australia in Camper Van With His Cat -Providr

man travels with his calico cat through Australia in a van

This man used to live in Hobart, Tasmania but  he decided to quit his job in May of 2015 sold his possessions, including his house, bought a camper van and began to travel Australia. He didn’t travel alone though. His cat Willow was with him for ever mile (or kilometer). He keeps a close eye on Willow but he also has her wear a tracking collar so he knows where she is all the time. Rich and Willow traveled over 50,000 kilometers and when they finally returned home, Rich decided they weren’t done with traveling yet. You can follow Rich and Willow’s adventures at VanCatMeow.com  You can sign up to have Willow send you postcards so you  never wonder again, “Where are  Rich and Willow?”

The Cats of Longwood Gardens – Atlas Obscura

black and white cat in longwood gardens

Here is another in my series on cats with jobs. These Longwood Garden cats have a pretty nice gig going. The Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania are filled with colorful plants (even some carnivorous ones!). The working felines at Longwood actually have two jobs. They patrol and take are of pest control and they are also feline ambassadors.  There are about 12 cats working there and are all loved and cared for. They are all very well loved rescue cats. They never used to wear collars but ever since a visitor took a Longwood feline worker home, thinking he was a stray. Thankfully, the purloined pussy cat was returned to his friends and cat co-workers.  I think this is one of the best feline jobs I’ve reported on yet!

Buddy The Adventure Cat Enjoys the Great Outdoors – Philly.com

Buddy the Adventure Cat

Meowza! Cats are getting more and more adventurous! Meet Buddy, a feline that likes to head out into the great outdoors. Buddy was rescued when he was 7-months old when he was found near an old warehouse. Someone put Buddy in a box and set it next to Steve Swartz’s desk. Good think Steve is a cat lover and Buddy had a forever home.

Buddy is now an adventure cat in training. On the day this article was written he was a little leery of the photographer which is why he’s peeking out of his carrier. I was very glad to hear that cats can be in training to be an adventure cat because I’m a wannabe kayaking cat and will begin my training this summer. Who knows, maybe I’ll bump into Buddy on a trail someday. Adventure on my feline friends!

British MPs Launch a Group Dedicated To Cat Welfare – inews.co.uk

The British folks always seem to be on the forefront of cat news. Members of British Parliament and their constituents have joined together with animal charities to campaign for better rights for cats in the UK. They will lobby for law changes to improve protection for cats and their owners and will focus on feline welfare and key issues affecting cats such as toxins in antifreeze and ownership of air guns. Cats do not have the same rights as dogs in road traffic accidents and they seek to change this.  APGOCATS has been created which will be dedicated to tackling matters affecting feline welfare. I guess when it comes to laws pertaining to felines, I am a purrlitical animal!

Alberto Opines on Dr. Seuss in this week’s Friendly Fill ins # 95

img_1275

Hello Folks,
Alberto here doing this week’s fill ins. If you’d like to join the blog hop, head on over to McGuffy’s Reader or, to our friends who co-host the hop, 15andmeowing.  You can also add your “Seussian” fill ins in the comments in this blog post.

“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is you-er than you!
Dr. Seuss

Here are this week’s fill ins:

1. My favorite Dr. Seuss book is _________________.
2. The most interesting person I have ever met is ______________.
3. Besides books by Dr. Seuss, my favourite book as a child was                       .
4. Lately, I have been working on                          .

Here are my fill in responses:

1.My favorite Dr. Seuss book is The Cat In The Hat (of course, what did you expect me to say?)

img_1277

2.The most interesting person I’ve ever met is purrhaps the relative of my humans who has been staying with us. This human enjoys doing puzzles and I enjoy helping challenge him by knocking those little pieces on the floor or, in some cases snacking on them. This human foolishly attempts to protect his puzzles with cardboard (to no avail I might add). My humans have never introduced me to this wonderful feline activity.

img_1278

3.Besides books by Dr. Seuss, my favorite book as a child was not really a book at all. You see I was a 21st Century kitten and I spent less time reading and more time playing games on the iPad. I would like to report that as an almost adult cat, I have become more litter-ary.

img_1279

4.Lately, I have been working on getting The Female Human in gear to update our website (FelineOpines.com) . She added a nice section about Cat Cafes from Katzenworld and also linked to a website that lists cat cafes all over the world. Nice job Human.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 2/14

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Friends,
Alberto here with my weekly purrrusal of the web. I hope you enjoy this week”s stories and Happy Valentine’s Day. Also, one note. My purrsonal assistant did not have access to her usual technology today so, if the formatting is a bit wonky, she asks that you bear with her. (It’s hard to find good help these days, sigh).

Nine of the World’s Hardest Working Cats – Mother Nature Network

Finally more of you humans are getting wise to one of my favorite subjects…working cats. I found some new listings in this article. The cat above works security in a warehouse. There’s a gym cat and my favorite, the weather cat. You humans need to explore the full potential of your felines. We’re quite talented you know.

Poodle Cats are a Breed – Romper

My readers know I and the rest of The Tribe of Five, are adamant proponents of adoption so this “breed”. thing isn’t something I usually talk about, This one is interesting though because thought the only poodles were canines. And, these curly kitties came from great stock, a feral cat in Montana, whose litter included one very curly haired kitten.

A Persian breeder adopted the kitten and named her “Miss DePesto” after a curly haired television character and the rest, is hiss-story.

Cats on Glass NYC Pop Up for a Good Cause – Lonely Planet

All you feline lovers in NYC rejoice! This event isn’t only cool, it’s for a good cause. Each room in the pop-up exhibit will feature an element of cats and an element of glass. There will be a live “Cats on Glass Playhouse” too! The pop-up will feature a “larger-than-life cat display”, a yarn pom-pom room, a meditation room with the sounds of cats purring and more. If you’re truly interested in bringing a kitty into your family, you can play with cats that can be adopted. And donations will be taken for the Humane Society of New York.

Sometimes You Don’t Even Have to Do Anything to Be a Famous Feline – People

Meet Paws the Cat, a Minnesota feline with 28furry digits and now included in the Guinness book of world records. Meowza, I bet he can make those furry toy mice fly! Paws is. Polydactyl feline. Sometimes these cats are called Hemmingway cats because the author kept a tribe of extra toed kitties at his Florida home.

Larry The Number 10 Downing Street Cat Terrible at Rodent Control – Mirror.co

Purrhaps this piece should be called, “Cats in danger of losing their jobs” Seems the British PM is no great fan of Larry and recently exterminators had to be called in to 10 Downing Street to deal with the vermin problem.

The mirror reports that, “…the brown and white tabby is often found sleeping in the street or, at his most energetic, fighting with other Westminster felines, including the Foreign Office’s cat Palmerston.” Larry, my friend, you’d better check your contract or you might be looking for a new job!

Lucky Cats!

Hello Folks,
Oliver Here. We had a great surpurrrise last week. Several weeks ago we sent the Female Human over to our friends Dezi and Raena at Deziz World.  Much to our surprise and delight they were having a drawing for a pawsome prize and so we ordered….err…requested that our Purrsonal Assistant enter us. And guess what, we won! Here is a little glimpse into the excitement of the day the gift arrived.

Tucker: “Step back everyone, allow me, your Alpha to inspect this box. Hmm, looks okay, proceed little felines.”

img_1224

“Meowza, this is a bit of a tight fit for me!”

img_1220

“Alberto, any tips for figuring out this thing?

img_1217

“I think you’re supposed to sit in it this way, Oliver. Still not much room though.”

img_1214

“Hey Humans, what is this thing? Not too much room in here even after you take out that soft fuzzy item!”

“Finally, the humans removed the intrusive items inside the box. Now with a few adjustments, I can just fit.”

img_1216

The Human Opines: “Thank you Dezi and Raena   and Art of Paws for this beautiful dark wood cat shelf and the soft sheepskin winter cover. Once we have it installed, The Tribe of Five will will appreciate it even more.”

“This beautiful product from Art of Paws fits in with any decor and is quite elegant. Noted below is a photo of the mounted shelf and a feline who looks very comfy and  happy.

Friendly Fill Ins Week #91

We’re getting quite fond of these weekly fill ins. This week we’re doing something a bit different and each of the The Tribe of Five will be contributing to the fill ins. We hope you enjoy our answers. You can join this blog hop at McGuffy’s Reader, or head on over to the Fill In co-host, our friends at 15andmeowing.  You are always welcome to share your fill in answers in the comments section of our post as well.

Here are this week’s fill ins:

1. Trust________________.
2. I would protest _____________________.
3. I have                  since                .

4. Right now, I                   .

Here are our answers:

1.Trust me (Oliver)  to find all the heating vents in the house and maximize the heat coming out of each one. This is one of my favorites, in the kitchen.

2.I would protest
if we (Tucker and Lily) were not allowed enough room on the sofa to cuddle. You can see I (Tucker) am feeling a bit cramped even in the space I’m allowed.

img_2667

3.I (Jasmine) have served as nurse to the Humans ever since I was a kitten. Here I am standing on the Female Human’s chest to ensure she’s breathing during a recent bout with the flu..

img_2824

4.Right now I (Alberto)  am guarding this puzzle thing that the relative of the Humans so foolishly decided to assemble (and attempt to protect) on my dining room table. Are there little pieces of this puzzle on the floor? I’ll let you be the judge.

Friendly Fill Ins # 90

Hello My Friends,
Oliver here. I’m doing Fill Ins this week. I hope you enjoy my answers. If you want to join the blog hop you can hop on over to McGuffy’s Reader  or co-hosts, our friends at 15andmeowing. If you prefer, you can add your fill ins in the comments for this post as well.
Purrs & Head Bonks,
black and white cat Oliver

The Fill Ins:

1. The flu shot ______________________.

2. I think everyone should take ____________________ daily.

3. I (almost) always                     , because                        .

4. I (almost) never                         because

My Fill In Answers:

Oliver from the Tribe of Five with Dr. Ponsness at Pend Oreille Veterinary Service

1.The flu shot doesn’t sound like something I would want but when I go the the place of the white coats I’m never afraid. That’s because they are “fear free” which means they do everything, even designing the building to help their visitors feel comfortable, safe and not on edge. Alberto and I opined about this place in our post, Oliver and Alberto Get Fearless.

img_0097
2.I think everyone should take
a chill pill daily.  This is me, chillin’ along the wide window sill behind the sofa. I think if humans chilled a little more there would be less nasty comments on social media, fewer family arguments and less road rage. Take a chill pill folks, it will do you good!

black and white cat sleeping under a red blanket
3. I (almost) always
enjoy sleeping under the down blanket on the sofa in the winter, because it’s warm and cozy but a bit of a bummer when a human doesn’t see me and sits on top of me!

img_1172

4. I (almost) never sleep alone because it’s much more pleasant (and warm) to have a human or another feline to cuddle with.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 12/27

Furry New Year to All!
Alberto here. It’s hard to believe that 2017 has almost ended. Thanks to all my friends who enjoy my #WalkThroughTheWebWednesday feline mewsings.

Here’s to a fantastic 2018!
Purrs & Head Bonks,
Alberto

Not Seal Team 6-Cat Team 7! – The Virginia Pilot, Military News

CatTeam7

As if it’s not enough for our military taking care of our country, now they’re taking care of feral cats too! A special team (Cat Team 7) has a mission to trap feral felines on their base at Naval Station Norfolk, spay and neuter them and then find them furever homes!

Unlike Seal Team 6, this team’s mission is no secret and their success record is amazing. They rescued about 70 felines in 2017. Cat Team 7 has a Facebook page and you can view felines available for adoption too.

We greatly appreciate our military and now we have even more reason to love them.  I give Cat Team 7 a two paw salute!

Backpack Cat Carrier for Fashionable Felines – HausPanther

CatySmileBackPack

Now that Christmas has come and gone, purrhaps  you or your human are disappointed that you didn’t get the purrfect gift. Well I have good news. I found this little item when visiting my friend, Kate Benjamin’s HausPanther cat lifestyle site. (Actually, I’ve never met her but my human has at the BlogPaws blogger and writer’s conference). Kate always has the best and most wonderful feline things.

I have seen another feline backpack but IMHO the felines being toted around in that thing look like they’re all begging to get out. This Catysmile backpack carrier  not only satisfies the human’s desire for style but it has two windows and enough room for felines to stretch out. Now the information for this backpack says the model cat is 10 pounds. This is not good news for Tucker (16 pounds) or for me with my long, svelte 13 pound body. Bit if your kitty is not quite as hefty as we are, I think it’s a purrfect cat carrier.

Japanese Cat Tree for Design Conscious Humans, only 1 million yen-DesignBoom

CatTree

The Tribe of Five loves our cat condo. But when I saw this one, it made ours look shabby and out of date. Take a look at this beauty, designed for human the esthetic but also with CatTree2a feline’s need in mind. Needless to say, the tree is made of quality materials. It’s called the Neko Tree and I think the Tribe of Five should have one. I had the female human convert 1 milion yen to USD and it’s only $8,826,20 (which sounds waaay better than 1 million yen!)

So if your humans are as serious about your comfort and happiness as they say they are, ask them if they’re willing to spend 1 million yen. And if you get one, send us a photo!

Why Your Cat Simply Can’t Resist Catnip – Katzenworld

catnip

There are some fantastic articles from our friends at Katzenworld and this one, in my opinion, is the definitive answer to all your catnip questions. For instance why do some of us go completely bonkers for it and why other felines take a sniff and walk away, Siamese cat on tea taBLEuninterested.  You’ll find out what catnip is, why we’re attracted to it, what it can be used for (did you know humans can benefit from catnip?) Jasmine once interviewed a very refined kitty named Navi who sips catnip tea from an elegant china cup).

I say two paws up for catnip and, if you want to see the effect of catnip on a 2-year old kitty (me) and a 14-year old kitty (Tucker) take a look at our video.

Georgia family’s lost cat found in Southern California five months later – ABCNews

bitty kitty arrives home after 2000 mile journey

I love happy stories and for these Georgia humans, Christmas was very happy indeed. Kitty Bitty is a small feline but he took a big trip after he disappeared from his family’s home in Georgia on July fourth.  He found himself 2,000 miles away from home in Riverside, California.

Fortunately Kitty Bitty still had his collar and tags on and the The ASPCA in Riverside, California, contacted his humans and before he knew it, he was on a plane making his way home for Christmas! The nice humans at the ASPCA helped pay his ticket home and wrote messages on his carrier. How did he get to California? It seems he hitched a ride on a Pepsi truck making a cross-country trip. My readers will be happy to know that Bitty Kitty is now an indoor cat!

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 11/15

546cd8fc-571d-40dc-9c00-c8eb9b6fbc2a-180-00000000e573caec

Hello Friends,
Alberto here with my Wednesday wandering through the web. I hope you enjoy the feline finds!
Purrs & Head Bonks,
Siamese cat with blue eyes

Cat Whisperer Firefighter – itv.com

fire fighter rescues cat on roof

Once again, our friends across the “pond” prove that they are ahead of the curve when it comes to moggie care. The Shropshire Fire and rescue and the RSPCA were called to a house for assistance for a feline named Tinkerbell who’d been stuck on a roof for two days.

A firefighter named Andy (but also referred to as “the cat whisperer” climbed the ladder to the roof, spoke to the frightened feline and she walked right into the carrier he put out for her.  The entire rescue took about 45 minutes.

Does your town have a cat whisperer? I think every town needs one!

Cat Cosplay – @Cat_Cosplay on Twitter/Instagram and Facebook

calico cat in steampunk costume

Dap-purr Steampunk Cat @CatCosplayInc

What is this madness the humans call “cosplay”? I had my purrsonal assistant look up the definition of this strange practice. It is “the practice of dressing up as a character from a movie, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga and anime.” Okay humans, dress up like anything you like but do you really have to bring felines into this wacky ritual?

After my stringent warning to the humans about NEVER attempting to stuff me in a costume again and, after so many of my feline friends chimed in regarding my “no costume” rule I was dismayed to see so many cats in costumes!  I cannot wrap my kitty head around this and would love to hear from any “cosplay kitties” as to why you enjoy this (at least you look like you’re enjoying yourself in the photos).

This Man and His Cats Recreate Scenes From Famous Movies – Good Housekeeping

man and black cat share a string of spaghetti

Aaaaand, yet another human who thinks it’s a great idea to dress up his cats (at least most of these are photoshopped to save the poor felines the indignity and trauma of costumes).

Now this human (who clearly has too much time on his hands) loves films so much, he’s dragged his poor kitties into his passion and recreates his favorite scenes from films.

Good grief humans, can’t you go through a day without humiliating your felines??!! I long for the days in Egypt when we cats were revered like gods.

SNAP CAT – CATS AND BUNNIES LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME – Storytrender

siamese kitten and look alike bunny

Now I’ve had many folks see my photo and say things like, “Oh, he looks just like my Siamese cat!” but I’ve never heard anyone say I resemble a rabbit. But animal photographer Mark Taylor, from the UK decided to photograph look-alike felines and bunnies and I must say, I think he nailed it! Purrrruse the photos and see if you can find a bunny that resembles your feline visage.

Salt Lake’s first cat cafe – The Salt Lake Tribune

two women play with siamese cats

Scott Sommerdorf | The Salt Lake Tribune) Melissa Davis, left and Jackie Rogers play and pet cats at Tinker’s Cat Cafe.

I am a fan of cat cafes and am always excited to hear about new ones. And I’m purring with delight to know that the trend is getting closer to our Idaho home!  Tinkers Cat Cafe  sounds like a wonderful place and it, as most of the cat cafes we’ve featured, was inspired by the feline cafes in Japan.

The cafe has a cat side and a food side with delicious food and drinks brought in from local establishments . The Cafe owner says they carry the best bagels in town from Ditta Cafe, cool cat-shaped cookies from Les Madelines and they also offer vegan  and gluten-free options. The goal is to keep the humans and the cats happy.

All the cats are available for adoption. There are no kittens there as kittens adopt quickly.  Two paws up for Tinkers Cat Cafe. I’d love to hear from any of my readers who’ve visited a cat cafe, drop me a line and tell me about your experience.

So this week the humans celebrated this thing called Halloween.  The Tribe of Five would like to go on record as saying that there is absolutely nothing for felines to celebrate on Halloween!  And why do I say this, well, allow me to explain.

First, the humans have been known to attempt to shove members of The Tribe of Five  into ridiculous devices of torture that they refer to as “costumes”. They know better than to try that with this Alpha but they did attempt it with Alberto last year. (You may recall his blog about The Great Halloween Indignity) I am happy to report that this was the human’s first and last attempt to dress any of the Tribe of Five for this event.

Still, not all cats have been able to avoid these indignities, I was horrified to see photos of felines strapped into these items of torture all over the internet (see samples above). Just take a look at their faces and tell me that they’re enjoying themselves!

img_2361Now, if you are a kitty who’s managed to escape the whole costume thing there are other things about this Halloween that I find disturbing. For instance, the male and female humans leave five days a week to a place they call “the business”. Now since they own this “business” I can only assume that they have total control over what happens there. And this is why I got my whiskers in a twist when I saw this photo. Evidently they allow other humans to bring their canines to this “business”. I am highly insulted that they have not invited the Tribe of Five to work there (not that we felines actually work, we are far better at snoopervising.)  Just let me say the humans have a lot of explaining to do!

img_0092And, as if the indignity of knowing your very own humans are secretly spending time with other humans’ canines isn’t enough to send us into a tail spin, then there is the torture we go through every night of this Halloween. Now anyone with half a brain knows that the doorbell is not the feline’s friend. (Note to guests, you can find more about doorbells and other rules you should know here.) And it’s not just one “ringy dingy” or even two “ringy dingys”, it’s the constant torture of this despicable doorbell thing causing us to run and hide every few minutes. Poor Oliver only got as far as the dinner take out bag before the hordes of costumed candy thieves arrived.

All night it’s the same hellish routine, get settled on your favorite spot on the sofa, then the demon doorbell rings,  run and hide only to start the routine all over again in a few moments.  I don’t know what you humans find so entrancing about wearing stupid clothes and putting stuff on your face so you can hijack candy from your neighbors (and I might add that teaching this horrible practice to little children is beyond the pale!)

The Tribe of Five took a poll and we all decided we’re boycotting this Halloween thing next year and are considering drastic measures to keep the humans from opening the front door.  I mean just look at what Halloween did to Al this year!

So my fellow felines, unite against this anti-kitty holiday and join us in our boycott of this disgusting celebration next year. Felines Unite!!

Purrs & Head Bonks,
Tucker
