As you know, we felines are known for our agility and when we meet another species with similar grace and agility we are quite impressed.

Sunday Selfies – 15 And Meowing

We live in the Inland northwest, lots of ranches and farms and the humans have never introduced us to this wonderful stuff. I also liked the story about the female human being tasked to declutter and going to a tag sale instead. Our female human does the same. Last weekend she came home with three paintings from an event called Funky Junk! These humans, go figure!

Eli’s Sunday Selfie – Animal Shelter Volunteer Life

The Many Places of Oliver

Hello All,
Oliver here. I wanted to talk about how humans get themselves all stressed about the places we feline choose to hang out. I mean really, I’m not hanging off the winter sweaters in the closet (although I do enjoy brushing past the dark colors on the clothing that hangs on the lower racks). But I digress.

Black and white cat in a dinner take away bag There are a few places I like to hang out and I have purrrfectly good reasons for doing so. For instance, I do not see the harm in hanging out in the take out bag after the humans have emptied the food from it. Good grief, it’s not like I got any of the dinner but I do enjoy the delicious smells.. Really people,. Don’t be so selfish!

They shoo me away from the bag so I shrug my shoulders and think, “fine, there are lots of other places for me to lounge.

I find a new spot and wouldn’t you know, the female human starts screeching, “Get down!” How rude! And I think I look quite adorable, how could anyone yell at all this cuteness? And what’s so sacred about this thing they call the “dining room table” anyway?

So, like the good kitty I am, I remove myself from the dining room table, and stretch out on the window ledge in the kitchen. And again I get attitude and stink eye. Good grief what in the world do these humans want from me? And anyway, I think the color of those oranges really compliments my black and white fur.

Finally I give up, go to the back of the living room sofa and stretch out on the wide window ledge, looking at the view and contemplating my options. Is there ever going to be a place for me? What is the meaning of my life and where shall I lounge next?

Well, that’s my story. Just a young feline trying to find his place in this world (and this house). For now, cheers to all my friends, furry, feathered and otherwise.

Walk Through The Web Wednesdy 9/13

Hello Friends, Feathered, Furry and Otherwise,
Alberto here, bringing you my favorite feline finds from my deep purrrusual of the web. I must say, life has been very hard for the Tribe of Five lately. All summer, people (the female human refers to them as “relatives”) have been marching in and out of our house, causing our humans to be less than their normal attentive selves and closing the door to OUR bedroom and refusing us access. This constant parade of strange humans must cease and if it doesn’t soon, the Tribe will have to take drastic measures (don’t ask, it won’t be pretty). At least my purrrrsonal assistant made time to get my Wednesday wanderings post done but I am not happy. There is much that the Tribe of Five want to opine about.

El Gato Tiny House Designed with Felines in Mind – New Atlas

The female human loves to watch the big square with moving pictures and one of her favorite things is a show about tiny houses. Now as we are a Feline Tribe of Five and happily accustomed to quite a bit of space, we’ve told her, “Don’t even think about it” but I must say, this little abode, created with felines in mind is on awesome space. Although they call it “El Gato” they could have called it “El Perro” because there is a pet door that leads to a kennel and a dog washing station. My favorite part is the rooftop deck where a cat can catch a few rays and the built in cat tree. Way to go humans!

Those of you who follow my Wednesday wanderings know how much I love a good story about working cats and, my love and admiration for the good humans “across the pond” who have such love for “moggies”. This story hits both passions and showcases a working cat who made quite an impression.

Brutus, the tabby would walk from his home to the local supermarket in Wales every day, charming customers and snoopervising the quality of the meat and fish section. With a Facebook following of over 12,000 folks he was quiet a social media phenom. Sadly, he passed away earlier this year, but his fans raised 4,000 pounds (or over $5,000.00 us) and had an 18″ bronze statue of Brutus made so that all those who met and loved him can remember him. RIP Brutus, you left paw prints on the hearts of many folks.

There are ongoing stories about felines and the latest weather disasters. I found this one interesting because the female human has visited the Hemmingway Cats. These cats reside at what is the former home of the writer, Ernest Hemmingway. The cats there are all polydactyl (six-toed). How did these unusual felines get there? The story is that Ernest Hemingway was given a white six-toed cat by a ship’s captain and some of the cats who live on the museum grounds are descendants of that original cat, named Snow White.

Many feline lovers were worried about the Hemmingway House cats when Irma came blowing through. Well, I’m happy to tell you they are all safe and sound and, the good folks that care for the felines planned ahead, laying in a supply of 300 pounds of cat food before the storm, enough to feed all 55 kitties for the next four weeks (they normally eat 80 lbs of food per week). Two paws up for the forward thinking humans!

Suki the Cat-The Adventures of a Beautiful Cat Across Wild Canada-UFunk

I have been seeing photos of this stunning cat all over social media but never read anything about this feline’s story. I was happy to see more photos of this stunning Bengal. Suki is an adventure cat and as a Bengal, she is elegant and graceful with all the beauty of a wild but the temperament and sweetness of a domestic feline. Bengals were created by breeding Asian leopard cats with domestic cats. And even though Suki liked to live on the edge, she also enjoys eating treats, cuddling, and chilling at home.

It’s not only humans who have to be concerned about their job becoming redundant. Hodge has been working at the South Loop used bookstore for 10 years but sadly, was laid off on June 30th of this year because the book store closed it’s doors due to declining business. Hodge has had two books written about him and the store was selected as the city’s “best bookstore with a cat”.

But don’t worry about Hodge, his retirement is quite cushy. He is now living with the bookstore owner who rescued him 10 years ago and is joined by his feline co-worker Ma’at. Every working cat deserves a nice retirement like this. Click here to see a video of Hodge in his element at the bookstore.

All here checking in with my usual Wednesday wander through the web looking for all things feline. Last week I took a slightly different approach and highlighted stories about felines and other pets affected by Hurricane Harvey. As I have my purrrrsonal assistant type this for me, I’ve learned that there is another hurricane forming and we here, in the Inland Northwest are suffering from fires raging all around us. To all my friends, furry, feathered and otherwise The Tribe of Five and our humans want you to know we are sending prayers to you all.

What’s Next For the Lost & Rescued Animals of Hurricane Harvey? – Mother Nature Network

Many folks have been concerned not only about the rescue of animals affected by Harvey but are also concerned by stories of animals being flown out of the Houston area to shelters around the country. I must admit, The Tribe of Five has been concerned that animals are being whisked away from their homes without an attempt to find their humans but this article explains that this is not happening. In fact, shelter animals are being moved to no-kill shelters across the country so that there is room for the rescued pets to stay while the humans attempt to reunite them with their families.

Evidently the good folks in the Houston area already had a plan in place and, as the article notes, “Some people wrongfully assume that the dogs and cats being taken out of storm-impacted areas could be unclaimed family pets. But rescue groups and shelters are moving out animals that were already in their care before the storm in order to make room for pets that were displaced by Harvey. The pets that are being moved were strays or owner surrenders that were already waiting to be adopted.”

Two paws up for all the good folks who are helping animals reunite with their families!

Kitten Sneaks In Through Open Window, Decides To Adopt The Man Who Lives There -I Heart Cats

And while we’re on the subject of pet adoption, I give this little kitten kudos for taking adoption into his own paws. When this human came home he found an itty bitty kitty sitting in his favorite chair and, after he surveyed the neighborhood to see if the little guy belonged to anyone, finally decided to adopt him. Homeless Felines unite…be sure and check for open windows to get yourselves adopted!

The Postal Museum is looking for cat mascots – Time Out London

The British are always on the cutting edge when it comes to felines and evidently their post office is just as feline forward thinking. The Post Office museum is going to select a feline as their mascot and I must say the entries are stunning. If I thought we could get the humans to move with us to England, I’d throw my hat in the ring as well.

Posey Went For A Walk and Brought Her Humans Something Special – LikeMag

Posey was a stray kitty who one day wandered into the hearts and home of her humans when she was barely out of kittenhood herself. She arrived with her three kittens and her humans took them all in, cared for them and loved them and then found furever homes for Posey’s kittens. That was four years ago and recently Posey wandered off for a while. Just when her humans were beginning to worry about her, she returned home, with a little gift in tow. I guess Posey was getting lonely.

Palmerston the cat outshines rival Downing Street mouser Larry – UPI News

I’ve reported about the British political felines and introduced Palmerston in a previous blog post . There was some initial hissing and fuzzy tail incidents between Palmerston and the other purrlitical felines at 10 Downing Street but it appears all has settled down. And, Palmerston has proven himself to be Lord of the Mousers, surpassing the British government’s longtime mouse-hunting cat Larry’s position as Chief mouser. A recent document released under Freedom of Information laws stated Palmerston killed at least 27 mice since coming to the office last year.

The Tribe of Five had a brief mouse encounter in our house this summer when several hapless field mice made their way into our storage room. Oliver and I made short work of them while the female human chased us around and tried to save the mice. Really human, mouse hunting is what cat’s do. Sadly, we did not come anywhere close to Palmerston’s mouse count.

Wade Through The Web Wednesday-Hurricane Edition 8/30/17

Alberto here. As my regular readers know, Wednesdays are normally my “Walk Through the Web Wednesday” posts where I purrruse the web and bring you the newest and finest feline articles. This week is a bit different. In light of the suffering of humans and their furry, feathered and otherwise friends due to Hurricane Harvey. I put on my new life jacket in solidarity with all my friends and I sure wish each one of them had a life vest like mine. My humans are giving to several great human relief organizations as well as hurricane aid for pets. Please do what you can for the folks affected by this terrible disaster and please keep them all in your prayers.

Residents & Rescuers Help Pets – LoveMeow.com

Many organizations are coming to the rescue of lost pets. SPCA of Texas and Austin Pets Alive! are only a few who are locating, saving and attempting to reunite animals with their families. Over the weekend Austin Pets Alive! saved over 235 animals from Harvey’s direct path.

Calling All Veterinary Professionals – Today’s Veterinary Technician

Two Paws up to Pam Johnson Bennet who first reported this news. The Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners is calling on all veterinary professionals who are able to come and help with Hurricane Harvey relief. The board is issuing a Temporary Emergency License to out-of-state veterinary professionals who volunteer to help with the relief efforts. . The licenses are being offered free of charge. Help for the Animals of Hurricane Harvey – Best Friends

We love the folks at Best Friends. You may know about their amazing animal sanctuary but did you know they are a one stop information place about pets affected by Hurricane Harvey? They send teams to help rescue pets and much more. They are partnering with VetsPlusMore to help reunite people with their pets. They maintain an ongoing Disaster Fund for Emergency Assistance for Animals caught in the middle of disasters. Donations to this fund are used exclusively to support lifesaving work wherever and whenever a catastrophe occurs. Best Friends maintains a wish list on Amazon for those working to rescue animals due to the Hurricane so that you can purchase the things that they need in this effort.

Lawyers Have Taken Over the Rally Cat Saga – NBC Sports

Some of you may remember my earlier report on the fearless feline who ran into the outfield on August 9th at the bottom of the 6th inning at Bush Stadium. One of the ground crew captured the courageous cat and the feline has weaseled his way into the hearts of Cardinal Fans. Evidently, the plan was for Rally Cat to remain with the Cardinals group, in a cushy set up and they were even planning a Rally Cat promotion.

But human lawyers have stepped in and now there is a legal battle between the Cardinal’s organization and the St. Louis Feral Cat Outreach. Evidently these outreach folks feel it’s better to keep Rally Cat in a shelter than letting him have a good home. Take it from me, my brother Oliver came from a nice no-kill shelter but we’d much rather have the furever home we have now!

Demeter’s Kitten Fur Perfume – Bustle

I’ve reported on some crazy cat-themed products, Apollo Peak Winery’s Feline Wines like Pinot Meow and Catbernet. I’ve written about Meowijuana’s cigar shaped catnip treats and other great stuff but this product is really off the charts!

Demeter has created a kitten fur-scented perfume! They say that when you sniff this concoction it captures the “olfactory essence of the warmth and comfort of that purrfect spot, just behind a kitten’s neck. This isn’t the company’s first foray into unusual scents, the first three fragrances they produced were Dirt, Grass and Tomato and they’ve since created other popular scents such as Laundromat, Gin & Tonic and Paperback.

CatCon 2017 – Pet Product News

What is this strange event you might ask? Well it’s one of the premiere Feline events in the country. This year’s event (the third annual) attracted 15,000 cat lovers for a weekend of all things feline. It was held at the Pasadena Convention Center in Los Angeles in August and featured new feline products, feline fashion and human feline themed fashion. Some of the world’s most famous felines were in attendance and the best news of the weekend….more than 150 cats and kittens were adopted during the event!

Deaf Woman Teaches Sign Language to Her Three Cats -Elite Daily

We felines have the capacity to learn so much and this story just illustrates how amazing we are (and the humans who are patient enough to teach us!)

Two paws up for this lady who is a former teacher of the American School for the Deaf. She came up with this idea after she adopted a deaf cat named Bambi. She said that since her daughters learned signs from their infancy, she thought she’s try and teach her cats.

Silva, who is deaf herself, then taught signs to her two other cats, whose behaviors would be mimicked by Bambi soon after she arrived. So far her fantastic felines understand the signs for “come”, “more”, “stay”, “circle”, “play” “shrimp and some others. It has also helped make her shy kitty more outgoing and playful. Watch these clever kitties on the video.

Crazy Cat Themed Wedding on the Isle of Man – Rock N Roll Bride

If my humans ever decide to renew their vows, this is the theme they should pick! I find the choice of the Isle of Man for the venue very clever as I am sure all my readers are well versed in cat facts and know that the Isle of Man is the home of the Manx cat.

The beautiful bride and her bridesmaids wore cat shoes, earrings a cat fur scarf and a headband with little enamel cats peeking out. There was a cat cake, cat decor, cat favors…well you get the picture! What a lovely wedding and a lovely couple. I wish them a long and prospurrrrous married life!

Erin the Cat Princess – Magic Beans

black and white cat by yellow flower Oh my, I had to put my paw over my mouth to keep from meowing out loud. Seems Erin’s lackey…err purrsonal assistant is as inept at gardening as our own human. Now we felines take quite an interest in things from the great outdoors and ensure that we nibble, swat and toss anything from the outdoors that is brought indoors. The female human received some beautiful yellow roses and put them in a place she thinks we cannot reach…trust me, we’re working on it!

Big Dog Mom’s Most Glaring Weakness Revealed And It Will Surprise You

big dad dog in the back of an SUV I loved, loved this post because our humans are constantly accusing us of henios crimes such as shredding furniture, scratching wood on the doors, slobbering on the sliding glass doors and windows, etc. Finally I have something to point my paw at and say, “Seriously, you think WE’RE bad??!!”

I thought I’d seen every kitty video out there but I was woefully wrong. Some of these are completely hilarious however I did get a bit hissy when I saw that the Devo video only got honorable mention…really??!!

These Adventure Cats Are Giving Us FOMO – Travel Channel

You know how much I love stories about adventuresome cats ans this compilation is in honor of International Cat Day. I’ve written about a few of these fearless felines and I aspire to be one some day too! For those of you who follow our blog, yes, the training for kayaking is going well. The female human finally found a life vest that fits me.

Japan’s First Cat Cafe Train Combines Eating, Traveling & Feline Bonding – Sora News 24

All I can say is “Meow” it’s about time and two paws up to the folks in Japan! The train car cat cafe will begin in September and will be about a 2 1/2 hour ride in each direction.
A bento boxed lunch is provided for travelers (which include sweets) and a ticket that allows the unlimited travel on the Yoro Railway for that day. The ticket price is 3,000 Yen (about $27.00 U.S.) and a portion of the cost will be used to fund cat rescue operations.

Stray Cats Find Home on Amsterdam Houseboat – SF Gate

Here’s another wonderful International Cat Day story. There are many houseboats in Amsterdam on the canals and this one is being put to purrrrfect use! If your humans like to travel and find themselves in Amsterdam, make sure they check this place out.

The cat shelter boat is named De Poezenboot and has been in operation since 1968, when a lady inherited an old Dutch sailing barge. Now cat lovers from all over the world come to visit, drawing about 100 visitors a day.

Hundreds of Cats gather in Boston for first Caturday – Boston Globe

This is a shout out to Bean Town! These enlightened folks recently held their first public Caturday event. What I didn’t know is this event is happening in towns all across the country (I wonder why my town hasn’t held one??)

Boston’s first Caturday celebration was quite a success. What a Caturday event is a a feline friendly meet up. They advertised it on Facebook as “a day to reclaim the glory of the outdoors for our feline friends.” It was such a success that the organizer is planning to hold future Caturdays on the Boston Common on the first Caturday (Saturday for you humans) of each month. Folks showed up with cats on leashes, cats in strollers and cats in their arms. The dog people did a double take but there were no hissy fits.

I’m sure many of you have seen the viral video of the cats ringing a bell for food but this video takes it to the next level. Watch this fastidious feline select and order his favorite menu items. I am waiting for such an establishment to open in my community!

Now I am not a fan of the place of the white coats, although our place is set up to make us fearless and to actually enjoy the experience. (The Tribe of Five all visited and blogged about their experiences.) If any felines find themselves in this place, I hope they have a vet as kind and innovative as Dr. Ross Henderson!

Matilda, the former Algonquin Cat

The Algonquin Hotel, NY Hires A Fabulous New Feline – New York Post

Those of you who wander with me on Wednesdays know how much I like to feature working cats. This story is purrrticularily interesting to me. Matilda, the Algonquin Cat has retired after seven years with the hotel. Matilda first came to the notice of The Tribe of Five as she resembles our very own Alpha, Tucker. Take a look and let what you think. But. I digress.

About a month ago, an orange tabby, about a year old, was sighted in a feral colony, scrounging for food. He was immediately selected as Matilda’s replacement and now plays with toy mice, receives love from his human “staff” and visitors and has been officially hired as the newest Algonquin cat.

He has been dubbed Hamlet and his is the epitome of the rags to riches tale. Hamlet is the 12th Algonquin cat and its first male mascot in Orange and white tabby at the Algonquin hotel more than 40 years.

Hamlet, the handsome marmalade tabby will make his official debut tomorrow (August 3) at the hotel’s annual Cat Fashion Show which is a fund raiser for the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. My only questions is, “Hey Algonquin, where is my invitation??!!”

Ricky, the Distillery Cat – 89.3 WFPL (Ashlie Stevens)

Orange and white tabby in blue striped tie I’ve reported on cats who work in breweries, hardware stores, for police and fire fighters and even Russian cats who work in a museum but this is my first report of a cat working in a distillery. Ricky often greets visitors in a baby blue tie. Brett Connors, the distillery’s brand ambassador, adopted Ricky when he learned that the feline had FIV — feline immunodeficiency virus — which resulted in folks passing up adopting him as they were concerned about his medical costs.

Ricky’s initial job was to be security but he is so friendly and outgoing, he managed to write his own new, job description as head of hospitality.

Hiring cats for distillery work has a long tradition, as these businesses have a lot of grain on site and where there’s grain, there are mice.

Ricky is so successful in his hospitality role that the distillery is planning on hiring a few other felines, all with Ricky’s medical condition. Not only will they have more feline ambassadors but they’ll provide a home to cats that otherwise would not find a forever place to live. Bravo to Castle and Keys Distillery! I have requested the humans to try the product from this feline friendly company and they were quite happy to oblige!

I have wondered about all the working cats I write about, what do they do when they retire? Is there a retirement for them? We know that Matilda the Algonquin cat has retired but nothing is said about what kind of retirement she received. In this story, we find out what retirement is like for a Swiss Army cat.

This feline began hanging around the military base in Lyss in 2004. She was a bored house cat and wanted to find excitement that only life in the military could provide.

The soldiers in the barracks provided her snacks between meals and dubbed her “Broccoli” after the tabby ate some of the green vegetable when a soldier offered it to her.

Despite the fact that Broccoli had a home, she preferred hanging out with the soldiers and was added to the official roster of army animals about three years ago. This roster includes search and rescue and guard dogs, 57 riding horses and 200 pack horses but until Broccoli, no felines.

The feline’s owner and the military came to an agreement that she could enlist. The soldiers contribute to a fund so that she can have healthy meals. She shares an office with Werner Holzer who says she’s a polite and curious office mate. Since she is an official army animal she receives medical treatment from the army vet.

Now that Broccoli is 14, she is officially retired with the rank of Brigadier but lest you think sh’e is unique, she isn’t the only Swiss animal getting a pension from public funds.

Junior, the Danish Cat Takes a Rail Journey – The Local

Danish tabby takes a train ride I’ve featured rail riding felines before and I am always interested when a feline decides to travel. This little guy gave his humans quite a fright. He hopped on a local train and traveled 30 KM (18.64 miles) to the next town. I guess the moral to this story is, if your cat goes missing, check the local train stations!

Feline Birthday Cunundrum, Handmade Sushi or Canned Food? – Laughing Squid

Jun Yoshizuki of Jun’s Kitchen prepared a fabulous hand crafted sushi meal for his cat Nagi’s birthday. He placed the beautiful sushi platter with a plate of canned cat food next to it and waited to see what Nagi would choose. I know what I would choose! If you want to see Nagi’s choice you’ll have to watch the video.

In our community there are many dog events, Yappy Hours, Dog films, etc. Well finally, someone has created a feline affair that you can bring to your town (and hopefully to ours). This is a feline film/cat comedy event that allows people to experience the cat video phenomenon. The company has created some great original films and also serves as a forum for cat video creators to show off their work. The show travels with a multi-faceted entertainer, Carla Rhodes. This is a new venture and their website and app are in the creation process at CatVideos.com , You can also like their Facebook page. The Tribe of Five is in the process of getting our lackey, errrrr, purrsonal assistant to put together some videos of us. Who knows, you might see us up on the big screen some day!

Stray Kitten Wanders Into Firehouse, And Gets A Job! – Little Things

orange and white tabby fire cat named Flame The Belmont firehouse in Greenville, SC has experienced a parade of strays who come and then leave but not Flame, the orange tabby. Flame wandered in as a kitten and when the Fire Chief noticed that the firemen were playing with Flame and had created a place for him to sleep. It was obvious that Flame was there to stay. Flame has his own Instagram page and has become quite a national sensation.

CatInAFlat The bold heading of this article caught my eye, “Want to make extra money pet sitting? Cat in a Flat can let you earn £25 a night or £10 a visit for taking care of your neighbours’ moggies” Since I’m a feline and money is irrelevant to me, it was the name that the Brits call cats that drew my attention. Across the pond, they refer to my esteemed species as “moggies”. I had my purrrsonal assistant do some research on this word and this is what she found, “Moggy or moggie is an old British affectionate term for a domestic cat, but is also used as alternative name for a mongrel or mixed-breed cat whose ancestry and pedigree are unknown or only partially known. It was thought to be derived from the classic M markings on a tabbies head.”

But I digress, this news item is about a service that helps humans find trusted, insured cat (moggie) sitters who live nearby. The business has a website Cat in A Flat that matches cat sitters and cat lovers across the UK. The format resembles dating websites. At the time of this writing, the website has tens of thousands of registered sitters and is the fastest-growing cat sitting website in the UK. Humans can book and pay online making arranging a cat sitter quick and easy. There is another benefit from the website as it connects cat loving folks and allows many who live in cities and are not allowed to have “moggies” in their homes, look after them and enjoy some quality cat time.

Sounds like a great idea for city kittys but this feline and the rest of The Tribe of Five love their cat sitter, Cathy O’Toole Lancaster from Cathy’s Critter Care. She gives us lots of love and makes sure Tucker takes his medicine and she even texts photos of us to the humans while they are away.
