National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week #3

siamese cat sitting on stool
Hi Folks,

Lilly here. I’m another happy Tribe of Five Member who was adopted from our local shelter (Panhandle Animal Shelter).  They do lots of great things there but this is one of my favorites. It’s called the Home to Home program and what it does is allow the shelter to help dogs and cats find new furever homes.

Now why, you may ask, would a dog or cat need a NEW home if they already have a home?  Here’s what the PAS website has to say about it:

With an increase in owner surrenders in the past few years, Home to Home was developed to assist in rehoming pets in a manner that causes less stress. As much as we like to think our shelter is a happy place, it isn’t a home and can be stressful for the animals.

The number one reason for surrendering pets is an unavoidable change in living situations. A perfect opportunity to use the Home to Home website would be within the time frame of finding out that relocation is necessary and the actual moving date. Of course, if a suitable new home is not found in time, bringing the animal to the shelter is always an option.”

Sometimes life happens, and with this program, there can be a happy ending for all, the humans who get to meet the new humans that will be loving their pets and the dogs and cats who will go to a new home without every having to stay in the shelter. Two paws up for a win-win situation!

No one ever wants to say goodbye to their fur kids but when things happen, it’s good to know that there is a program like Home to Home.

Purrs & Head Bonks,

Lily

The First Ever NY Cat Film Festival – Metro

NYCAtFilmFestival

Finally New York is getting wise to the idea that cats rule! They’ve had a Dog Film Festival for the last three years and this has really gotten my whiskers in a twist. Well thank goodness, someone got a clue and the FIRST Cat Film Festival will be held in New York at the Chelsea SVA Theater in December!  And all I can say is, “It’s about time!” If you want to learn more you can watch a promo for the event here.

Domestic Violence and Pets – The PAWS Act

My human attends a conference for pet writers and bloggers called BlogPaws and at this conference, she learned about pets of domestic abuse survivors. Did  you know that often, people in abusive situations have to choose between their safety and their pet? Did you know that in most shelters, domestic abuse survivors cannot take their pets because there is no place for the animals? How sad to force someone to part with the one thing that offers them unconditional love!

The Pet and Women Safety Act (PAWS Act, for short) is attempting to amend the federal criminal code to broaden the definition of stalking to include the reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury to a person’s pet. Additionally, it would expand interstate violations of a protection order to also cover pets. Lastly, it directs the Department of Agriculture to award grants for shelter, housing assistance, and support services for survivors of domestic violence with pets. This is a law The Tribe of Five can wholeheartedly support and we hope you will sign the petition and support it too. And how about checking with your local shelter and finding out if they have resources for the pets of domestic violence survivors?

Purr Minister 2017 – Metro.co.uk

black cat named midnight new purr minister

The only kind of purrlitical stuff I’m interested in is the feline variety. For instance, I was Oliver’s campaign manager when he ran for Purresident with the Kitty Kat Party last year.  Evidently, there are purrlitical felines in the  UK as well and they were vying for the title of  Purr Minister.

The 2017 Purr Minister campaign ended last week. There were six moggies who competed for the Purr Minister crown and each wrote a Manifursto explaining why they deserved to be voted the most fabulous feline in Westminster.  The winner was selected by the public and it was a hotly contested race.

This year’s winner, garnered 49 percent of the public vote. Two paws up for the new Purr Minister, Midnight!

In this village in Mandya, cats are worshipped as gods – Times of India

FelineTemple

Well my feline friends, if you feel as though you’re not getting enough respect in your household you may want to consider a move to Bekkalale village, India, where cats are literally put on a pedestal. Bekkalale, worships the cat as a form of goddess Mangamma and has no less than three temples dedicated to felines.  Humans are harshly punished for harming cats in this village and every year there is a festival to honor the majestic feline. (Which of course, is our due!)

Seattle’s Newest Cat Cafe Offers Beer, Japanese Snacks and a Whole Lot of Adorable-Seattle Magazine

Neko crop

Image Credit: Caitlin Unsell Follow the sign to Capitol Hill’s new kitty den.

Those cool cats in Seattle always seem to be on the cutting edge of hipness. Case in point, the Neko Cat Cafe that serves beer and snacks! The owner and founder of this cat cafe, Caitlin Unsell, was inspired by the cat cafes in Japan.  Neko is the third cat cafe in the Seattle area but the felines you meet at the Neko cafe are extra special.

Unsell partnered with Regional Animal Services of King County to help the cafe kitties find furever homes. All of the cats Neko (which means “cat” in Japanese) are diagnosed with the feline leukemia virus which is a disease that poses long term health issues but does not keep the cats from living long, happy lives.  People often pass over cats with health issues in shelters and Unsell hopes to change this by giving the cat loving community a chance to meet and know the felines at her cafe.

The cafe has two areas, one for the cafe and the other for the cats. The  happy felines have a long bank of windows at pavement level for great canine and human viewing.
I am overwhelmed when I realize how many great humans there are out there who are not just dedicating themselves to finding furever homes for felines but finding homes for felines that are usually passed over for adoption. Two paws up for the Neko Cat Cafe.

black cat named Parsley

Oh my goodness, I love this post. There are so many things I’d like to complain about. I sure hope Parsley provides us felines the opportunity to rant about our pet peeves again. I’ll be making my list in the meantime!

black and white cat needs home

I love to see the photos of the beautiful kitties at the PAWS shelter, not because I want cat’s to be in shelters but because they do all they can to find furever homes for the felines that come there. Mia had a great life with her human but her human passed away and now she’s looking for a new human to love her. ‘Hope you get adopted soon Mia!!!

Tucker Opines on Halloween

img_2348Hello There Friends,
So this week the humans celebrated this thing called Halloween.  The Tribe of Five would like to go on record as saying that there is absolutely nothing for felines to celebrate on Halloween!  And why do I say this, well, allow me to explain.

First, the humans have been known to attempt to shove members of The Tribe of Five  into ridiculous devices of torture that they refer to as “costumes”. They know better than to try that with this Alpha but they did attempt it with Alberto last year. (You may recall his blog about The Great Halloween Indignity) I am happy to report that this was the human’s first and last attempt to dress any of the Tribe of Five for this event.

Still, not all cats have been able to avoid these indignities, I was horrified to see photos of felines strapped into these items of torture all over the internet (see samples above). Just take a look at their faces and tell me that they’re enjoying themselves!

img_2361Now, if you are a kitty who’s managed to escape the whole costume thing there are other things about this Halloween that I find disturbing. For instance, the male and female humans leave five days a week to a place they call “the business”. Now since they own this “business” I can only assume that they have total control over what happens there. And this is why I got my whiskers in a twist when I saw this photo. Evidently they allow other humans to bring their canines to this “business”. I am highly insulted that they have not invited the Tribe of Five to work there (not that we felines actually work, we are far better at snoopervising.)  Just let me say the humans have a lot of explaining to do!

img_0092And, as if the indignity of knowing your very own humans are secretly spending time with other humans’ canines isn’t enough to send us into a tail spin, then there is the torture we go through every night of this Halloween. Now anyone with half a brain knows that the doorbell is not the feline’s friend. (Note to guests, you can find more about doorbells and other rules you should know here.) And it’s not just one “ringy dingy” or even two “ringy dingys”, it’s the constant torture of this despicable doorbell thing causing us to run and hide every few minutes. Poor Oliver only got as far as the dinner take out bag before the hordes of costumed candy thieves arrived.

All night it’s the same hellish routine, get settled on your favorite spot on the sofa, then the demon doorbell rings,  run and hide only to start the routine all over again in a few moments.  I don’t know what you humans find so entrancing about wearing stupid clothes and putting stuff on your face so you can hijack candy from your neighbors (and I might add that teaching this horrible practice to little children is beyond the pale!)

img_2105
The Tribe of Five took a poll and we all decided we’re boycotting this Halloween thing next year and are considering drastic measures to keep the humans from opening the front door.  I mean just look at what Halloween did to Al this year!

So my fellow felines, unite against this anti-kitty holiday and join us in our boycott of this disgusting celebration next year. Felines Unite!!

Tucker

Feral Cats From California Get Work, New Lives In Colorado-The Denver Post

black feral cat from California gets new home in Colorado

The feral cat population in California is exploding (estimates are 3 million). The weather is warm and food is fairly plentiful but feral cats don’t have great lives and don’t live very long either. Many California feral cats are euthanized but these kitties, if spayed/neutered can thrive if they’re given jobs as rodent control. And there are some dedicated folks in Colorado and at the Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats, a feral cat rescue are doing. So far they’ve made three trips from California to Colorado in the “Meowgic School Bus” giving felines a ride to their new work locations in barns, homes and businesses in Salida, Golden and Fort Collins Colorado.  What a wonderful way to give feral kitties a home and a purrrrrpose in life!

Cats at Weddings – Pinterest

bride and groom with black and white cat with blue bow tie
I have previously reported on weddings that included beloved felines or cat-themed weddings. Little did I know you could search “cats at weddings” and find such a treasure trove of photos. So humans, fear not. You can find all kinds of ideas to include your beloved kitty in your future wedding preparations.

The Real Felines of New York – I Can Haz Cheeseburger?

black New York cat

I will never understand why you humans are so interested in “housewives” from so many cities. I guess Jim Tews felt the same way so he started a page that features kitties from around the city.  Not only are the photos great but you can really get a glimpse into the life of the kitties in the Big Apple, for instance, there’s Scout from Astoria who has suffered under the city’s regulations, “I went to culinary school. I tried to open my own pastry shop, but I quickly found out I was up against a bureaucracy that was beyond my comprehension, and pretty intolerant. I had everything in place, but the health inspector shut us down as soon as he realized my staff was all cats.”

Rescued Feral Kitten Named D.O.G. Helps Train Support Dogs – Little Things

Black and white kitten trains therapy dogs

This story combines two things I love, cat adoption and working cats. Support Dogs Inc, in St. Louis recently added a feline member to the team. He’s a former feral kitten named D.O. G (pronounced “dee-OH-gee”) who has become one of the best training tools they have.  He trains the dogs to sit still, not to get up or react to him (and not to bark). D.O.G. is purrfectly fit for the job because he’s fearless and he stands up to all the dogs no matter their size. Way to go D.O.G and thanks to Support Dogs Inc for giving this feline a home and a job!

True Heroes,  Men Who Save Cats From Trees – BBC News

There are some mighty tall trees in Washington state, but Washington felines, take heart because you have Sean Sears and Tom Otto from Canopy Cat Rescue.  I say two paws up for these great humans! (You can see them in action by clicking on the link to the video below).

Modern, Architect-Designed Outdoor Cat Dwellings for Charity – Design Milk

gray tabby kitten in fancy cat condo
Architects  pulled out all the creative stops when they designed, built and donated unique and functional outdoor dwellings for cats.  Even celebrities got into the act and they decorated and auctioned off food bowls to benefit local shelters.  Thirteen cat-tastic dwellings were created this year. Which one is your favorite?

Miniature Furniture Designed Especially for Cats – Maxim

Once you have that condo purchased and set up, you’re going to need to furnish it and there’s a Japanese furniture manufacturer, Okawa City who can handle the task.  Purrrsonally, I’m a fan of the kitty sized bed and the matching nightstand and lamp. Check them out and watch the video  of felines enjoying their new furnishings.

Paddles, The “First Cat” of New Zealand – HuffPost

paddles the yellow and white first cat of New Zealand

I attempt to stay away from purrrlitical things here but my love of working cats forces me to report on purrrlitical felines. Paddles will be New Zealand’s “First Cat” when his human, labor party leader Jacinda Ardern becomes Prime Minister.  And that’s not the only thing unusual about Paddles, she has opposable thumbs so I’m thinking she will be typing her own purrrlitical announcements on her Twitter account @FirstCatofNZ

The Camping With Cats Instagram Page is Purrrfect – Cheezeburger

gray tabby camping in winterIf you follow me Wednesday meanderings you know I love to feature adventure cats and this week I hit the jackpot! There is an Instagram page with camping cats (a few that I’ve featured in past Walk Through The Web Wednesday posts).  I am inspired and am looking forward to having my human providing me with a little adventure in the snow this winter!

German Man Planning to Open Sweden’s First Cat Cafe – The Local

yellow and white tabby at Stockholms first cat cafe

Dirk Lüders visited cat cafes all over the world and decided that Sweden needed one too. The Cat Corner will be open soon and will be more focused on the “cat” than the “café” part and he hopes to raise awareness about the problem of homeless animals in Sweden.

So he started work on The Cat Corner and hopes to open the country’s very first cat café in the coming months. According to figures from the cat charity Svekatt, there are 150,000 homeless cats in Sweden and 30,000 in the Stockholm area alone, and those numbers are growing. The café will allow people who can’t have cats to enjoy feline time and will work with local shelters to get cats adopted.

Methinks it’s time for my humans to plan an international cat café trip..but wait, that would mean they’d have to a cat sitter for The Tribe of Five so maybe they’ll have to go one at a time. In the meantime, the humans will just have to follow this cat cafe on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.

Scratching Post Secrets Revealed Week #2 – ChirpyCats

black and white cat leaves sticky notes on cat scratcherI loved the scratching post sticky notes and who knew that this is a thing with felines? I recently saw that Bear Cat (Momma Kat and her Bear Cat) is quite fond of the stickies and now ChirpyCats are promoting them as well. Well sheesh, I’m always the last to get on img_2297-1the trend bandwagon. I was so inspired by this post that I put a sticky on the floor for Alberto. Maybe now he’ll quit spitting all over my furry little blue mouse!

Sunday Selfies Tocktober Edition Part 1 – 15andmeowing

yellow tabby and the book Wicked

Well, I must say I’ve never heard of “Tocktober” but I was fascinated with the book the 15 and Meowing cats are reading. I have ordered my purrrsonal assistant to get me a copy posthaste! And this Tocktober thing does sound like fun!

Like Cats and Dogs – Travels With Barley

dog and white cat

I loved this story about how a dog and a cat are best buddies. Makes me think that maybe the Tribe of Five could get along with a canine if the humans decide to do such a thing. Of course there would have to be a meeting. A very lengthy meeting!

Handsome Cat and Climber Duo Camp Across the World in One Sleeping Bag – People

man and his black cat camping in the snow

You all know I have a penchant for adventure cats and aspire to be one myself one day soon so naturally I couldn’t pass up this story. Simon and his human JJ Yosh have been adventure pals from the day they met.

Yosh said he started training Simon the day he came to live with him at a few weeks of age. Yosh is always outdoors and he wanted to enjoy his adventures with Simon and now the 17-month old feline explores the beautiful Colorado scenery where he lives and he and his human also explore other areas of the world. Simon has his own Instagram account and he’s become a world-famous adventure kitty. Simon, you’re my hero!

Stop the mewsic: A cat festival is coming to London – Time Out London

London CatFest

Once again our friends across the pond prove that England is one of the most feline friendly places. The newest event will take place in July 2018.

The event will be held at The Oval Space in east London. Attendees will see cat videos, enjoy tasty vegetarian street food and visit the Meow Parlor to visit with adoptable shelter kittens.

There will also be a “Cat Lit” section where readings will be done from “Homer’s Odyssey” now before you wonder what feline connection this book has it’s about an abandoned blind kitten.

Now if you plan to go, you are encouraged to wear feline themed clothing (you know like my favorite shirt that says “real men love cats”.  There will even be a “Glamour Puss” beauty bar and of course, the event wouldn’t be complete without cat art.

If you don’t think you can wait until July, you can always visit London’s Cat Cafe (Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium)  in the meantime.

Nathan the Beach Cat loves to swim in the ocean -Trending.com

black cat swimming in the ocean

First, let me begin by telling you that Nathan is a “she”.  This little kitty was dumped on a highway in Australia in a box. Her humans, Rian and  Melissa came to her rescue and the rest, as they say, is history. The family started taking her on their beach adventures and it was clear early on that this kitty was a lover of the water. She has so many adventures on the high seas that she’s now started her own Instagram account.

I’m quite impressed with these adventure cats and wonder if having black fur makes you a bit more adventurous than other felines.

Distillery Cat Wanted: Must Be Affable, Brand-Boosting, Cold-Blooded Killer – The Salt

DistilleryCat

A few months ago I featured an article about Ricky, the distillery cat who has done such a fantastic job, the distillery is planning on hiring more felines. Well, who knew that cats had a long history of working in distilleries?

This article features some of the more well-known distillery employed cats such as Towser the Mouser of Glenturret which is one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries. Towser killed over 28,000 mice during her 24-year career earned her a place in the Guinness World Records.

If you’re interested in learning more about the history of this popular job for cats, you’ll love this article.

Clapham Common: Every advert at Tube station replaced with pictures of cats – Evening Standard

cat photos replace advertisements in English Tube station

Once again, the British prove that they are feline fans!  People who travel through

Clapham Common station now can enjoy photos of cats rather than advertisements.  Citizens Advertising Takeover Service (CATS) decided they wanted to give passengers a break from the deluge of advertising and raised 23,000UKL to give the station a complete kitty makeover.

A total of 68 advertisements in the station were replaced with photos featuring felines from two rescue organizations, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home and  Cats Protection.  The clever folks of CAT also marketed the concept to cat owners, who donated 100UKL to make their felines famous. One gentlemen flew to England just to see his kitty’s photo displayed at the station.

James Turner, who spearheaded the campaign said, “We hope people will enjoy being in the station and maybe think a bit differently about the world around them. “Instead of asking you to buy something, we’re asking you to think about what’s really valuable in your life. It might not be cats, but it’s probably something you can’t find in the shops.”

Well I say two paws up for this idea and think we should think about something like this in the good old US of A!
