#AToZChallenge F

Hi All,
Tucker here.. Today’s letter is “F” for “FURRY AND FEATHERED WOODLAND FURIENDS”. We live in a rural area and there are many creatures that come to our house. The Female Human feeds most of them (not the skunks or the bears though). All these critters are very polite and go home after they’ve been fed (they can’t burrow under the house as we are built into a hill with lots of concrete.). All that is except the pesky woodpecker we wrote about recently.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these photos of the view we have at our house. The Humans refer to it as “kitty cable”. The Female Human told me to tell you that although there is only one bear photo included (look at the lazy thing, laying on the railing and eating the bird seed) we had not one, not two but 3 bears at our house! And also, the bird feeder is no longer on the downstairs deck!

Welcome to our very own purrsonal wild kingdom!

TuckieSig

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 4/4

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Friends,
Alberto here. Boy have we been busy with the April Blogging A to Z Challenge. My little feline noggin is getting tired looking for new ideas to write about every day. You know we felines are not overly excited about working under pressure but we committed to do the thing and The Tribe of Five believes in following through with our commitments. The Female Human is a bit cranky about all the typing though.

Man Has Genius Plan to Feed Cat When Keys are Misplaced – LAD Bible

feedcat.png

Let me just say that this is one of the nightmares The Tribe of Five has every time the Humans go away. Humans, PLEASE make sure that the cat feeder has keys before you leave town. Evidently, someone from work was going to drop the keys through the mail slot of the neighbor’s door so they could feed the cat. Except it was the wrong door and the neighbor had no key. What did the neighbor do? Their solution was quite innovative but let this be a lesson to all you humans!

Boy Bullied Because of His Unusual Eyes Finds Purrfect Friend – Love What Matters

boy with multicolor eyes adopts cat with same condition

We felines will never understand why you humans bully. Granted, we felines will mix it up a bit now and then but it’s only for play. The little boy’s parents were shown a photo from a rescue in Minnesota. Now mind you any cat photo is worth another look but this cat was extra special! The kitty had a cleft lip and heterochromia iridum (different colored eyes) just like the little boy Madden. The boy’s parents knew that cat was destined to be a part of their family. Some kind friends helped the family fund the road trip from Oklahoma to Minnesota. If there ever was a match made in heaven, this one is it. We give this story a 2-paws up and wish Madden and his feline friend many happy years!

What Your Cat’s DNA Can Tell You – LifeHacker

cat dna kit basepaws

We felines are curious things. I mean, look at me and my brother Oliver. One of us looks like a pure-bred Siamese and the other, hmmm, is a stocky black and white feline with a heart over his eye. Our Humans often say they’d love to know the story of every Tribe of Five member but because we were all rescues they have no history about us.  And then there’s our strange behaviors like why do we all run and hide when a human sneezes, why do some of us love beef and the others turn their noses up at it, and there are lots more questions the Humans would like to have answered.

Now not all of your questions about your fabulous felines can be answered but you can get more information about them from Basepaws, a company that says through a DNA kit, you can learn about your feline’s ancestry and their habits.

Our humans were intrigued by this article because the human who wrote it said that the kit covers several areas such as health, ancestry, predicting traits, physical traits and more.  Can you imagine what our Humans could learn about us? Now that I think about it, I’m not so sure I want them to know all our secrets!

Catios Are The Newest Way to Spoil Your Felines – Simplemost

black cat in outdoor catio

I’ve reported on catios before but they are becoming more of a “thing” and, as felines who enjoy the out of doors safely at our house, I thought this article was great, offering many options for you humans to choose from. Our Humans didn’t want a permanent structure built on the house (and during times when we have 6 months of winter I can understand) so they got us a “pop-up” catio that can be moved from the upstairs deck to downstairs by the waterfall or on the front porch. We blogged about it if you want to see what our catio is like. So my feline friends, tell your humans to get you a catio posthaste!

Crazy Cat Guy – PeopleMusic

song I happen to like cats

When The Female Human read this article she said, “Hah, I knew it! There are crazy cat guys too!” Now I am confused as to why The Female Human found this surprising, after all, she’s married to a crazy cat guy…but I digress.

The singer, Granger Smith recently wrote a parody of his song, “It Happens  Like That” titled, “I happen to like cats” and we think it’s quite a catchy tune. The best part about this song is that he and his crew took over a cat cafe to film the video and this wasn’t some publicity stunt, Granger Smith DOES like cats! Meow!

Hello Folks

This is our first time purrticipating in this challenge and we’re a bit apprehensive about coming up with a post inspired a letter every day but The Tribe of Five has resolved to do it.

Today’s letter is “A”, so I’m blogging about All of The Tribe.  I figure many of you will be new to our blog so I thought an introduction would be a good idea. We are five rescue felines who live in the Northwest with our two humans.

img_1196

My brother Alberto and I are the youngest, (2 years)  fostered and then adopted by our Humans. Lily is four years old, she was adopted from our local shelter and Tucker (the Alpha) and his sister Jasmine are 14 years old and moved with the humans to this home.

We will be taking turns opining on things that strike our fancy (in alphabetical order, of course). We hope you enjoy our feline view of the world and we look forward to having our purrsonal secretary read the posts of the other purrticipants to us.

The Great Fireplace Mystery

Hello Folks, Alberto here.

We recently had quite a conundrum at our house. For the last three weeks there has been a loud rattling, vibrating sound coming from our fireplace. It has interrupted the morning, afternoon and early evening naps of The Tribe of Five, which is annoying but it’s has caused great stress in The Male and Female Human’s lives.

The Female Human, having been advised by the fireplace people that this was probably a problem with the fireplace fan, shut off all the gas and the electricity that connects to the fireplace. She breathed a sigh of relief, believing this would resolve the situation. Soon the horrible shaking, vibrating and rattling began again. The fireplace people would not be able to come by for another week and a half so the Female Human sought advice elsewhere in the meantime.

When consulting some friends The Female Human was advised that there may be some air or water in the gas lines, causing the loud noises and vibrating. This concerned the female human so she called the gas company who promptly dispatched a gas expert. The gas guy spent a good amount of time checking everything, gas lines, testing for gas leaks, checking the water heater and whatever else he thought important.

img_2736

Oliver’s favorite spot

None of the Tribe of Five was interested in the gas guy’s activities except Oliver. Oliver has an unnatural love of this fireplace as evidenced in his video, “I love you fire”. Oliver was quite concerned that his access to his beloved fireplace might be blocked (it’s still chilly in our neck of the woods).

After several hours, the gas guy admitted defeat, confirmed that the house was not in danger of blowing up due to leaking gas and bade our Humans farewell.

TukLilySnuggle
Still the horrific noise continued so the Female Human, always a logical being, decided she’d video the fireplace so she could play the sound for the fireplace guy when he arrived. Every day, like clockwork, the terrible sound shook the house morning and afternoon and early evening. The Tribe of Five was actually getting used to it and our naps were undisturbed, until yesterday.

Yesterday, the fireplace human came to check the fireplace. He spoke with the female human for a few minutes and then she played the video for him.

After watching the video he chuckled and said one word, “woodpecker”. Evidently this type of bird has pulled stunts like this at other houses (including his), drumming on the metal fireplace pipes on the roof. The fireplace guy told the Female Human that it’s  mating season and evidently, the louder the noise, the more attractive the woodpecker. The fireplace guy suggested a shotgun and fortunately due to the Female Human’s behavior later, we were relieved that she didn’t have one.

Although the Female Human was comforted that we were not in imminent danger of being blown off the hillside, there was still a part of her that did not fully accept the fireplace guy’s proclamation, even after he took everything apart, checked the fan and pronounced all was in perfect working order.

img_1412

What the heck is she doing??!

Sure enough, about two hours after the fireplace guy left, the noise started again. A rather maniacal look came over the Female Human’s face, a look I hoped never to see again.  She opened the slider to the upstairs deck and ran outside yelling, “Get out of here you stupid bird, go find a tree to drill on!” while waving her arms like a demented seagull.  And, as if by magic, the noise stopped not to return the rest of the day.

img_1411

Meowza, she’s at it again!

Fast forward to this morning, when the Tribe of Five, having enjoyed our soft food breakfast was stretched out on our respective sofas, enjoying the sun streaming through the windows and preparing for our early morning nap. Suddenly, the sound started again.  Before you could say “Meowza”, the Female Human raced past us, flung open the glass doors, ran out on the deck, grabbed the snow shovel resting in the corner and began to bang on the lower part of the roof as she yelled “Get out, get out, leave us alone!”. Did I mention that she was wearing her sleeping attire during this little drama?

Methinks this war between the human and the pecking bird is not over. She has been hunched over her computer researching things like “getting rid of woodpeckers” and “keeping woodpeckers away”.  As she is a lover of all of God’s creation she doesn’t want to harm the offending bird, nor does she want to scare away the little birdies and the squirrel that come to the upstairs feeder. She just wants the woodpecker to go far, far away.

WantedWoodpecker

The culprit, northwest woodpecker, also called a flicker

The Tribe of Five refuses to join in the Human’s stress and hysteria. The only things we get our whiskers in a twist about is when our soft food meals are late, when you can see the bottom of our food bowls or when the litter boxes are not as pristine as we would like. This battle with the pecking bird is one the Female Human will have to fight on her own. However, The Tribe of Five is praying that the neighbors don’t call someone to take her away as a result of her erratic actions. I mean, who would give us our evening treats?

That’s it for now, I hope your days and your fireplaces are woodpecker free!

New Photo Book Shows that Cats are Art Worthy – Feature Shoot

CatPhotoBook

Before you start meowing at me and say, “There are plenty of cat books!” allow me to explain. This isn’t just a book of kitty photos. It’s a book from Humble Arts Foundation that features a curated selection of cat photos in a book called Humble Cats.

In the words of the article from Feature Shoot, “While at times the imagery is pleasingly kitsch, it also goes beyond the meme with more contemplative photographs that ask questions and provide few answers.” Now I’m a pretty savvy feline but I’m not sure what “kitsch” means I think any photo of us fabulous felines can be “contemplative”. Take for felines opine book Anita Aurit siamese cat and black and white catinstance, the new book by The Tribe of Five, Felines Opine about God. I think a number of our photos are quite contemplative. But I am digressing into shameless self promotion now (the book is available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle edition). End of shameless self-promotion.

There are other wonderful feline photo books out such as PhotoCat by Sacha de Boer.

If you can’t get enough of feline photos,  head on over to Instragram. Start by visiting Cats of Instagram and you’ll see some fabulous furry creatures there.

How Cats Tamed Us – The New Yorker
NewYorkerCatsTamedUs

The human writer of this article certainly knows their felines! They begin the article by saying that “When you own a cat, it often feels as though your pet is your boss.” First allow me to explain that no one owns a cat, we are the epitome of the saying, “Dogs have owners, cats have staff”. There is an excellent quote from the author of The Lion in the Living Room, Abigail Tucker, who says, “You could see our relationship with cats as a series of cat-controlled takeovers.”. In celebration of these and other ideas about how we felines fit into the lives of our humans (or purrhaps make our humans fit into our lives) a video has been created called “How Cats Tamed Us” a new edition to the “Obsession” series that is based on Tucker’s book. I was quite excited to see they got some big name stars for the video like Cole & Marmalade. Lil’ Bub and Grumpy Cat! Meow, I give this movie a 2 paws up!

Can you get a purr-fect score on this television cats quiz? MeTV

tv cats cat quiz
It’s about time that felines got some recognition for their television roles. Some of these questions will require that you dig deep, deep into your old TV show memory bank (this kitten never even heard of some of these) but it’s pretty cool. The quiz asks questions about the felines in courtroom dramas, sci-fi shows, cartoons and puppet shows. Take the quiz and let us know how you did!

4 Claw-some Cat Craft Books I’m Paws-itive You Need Right Now – BookRiot

cardboard buildable cat habitats
If your humans are crafty, you might want them to take a look at these books. The Female Human is crafty, even has a room she refers to as her “craft room”. This room is

img_2739

Me deciding if I should help The Female Human with her crafts or take a snooze on the cat bed on the bench.

usually off limits to me because I like to chew on plastic and paper and generally wreak havoc in her little spot but she does let me join her often. She’s even placed a little cat bed on a bench next to her crafting table so that I can snooze while she works.

I purrused the books and I think my favorite is the one that shows humans how to make cat castles. What feline doesn’t want their own castle, or airplane. tepee, rocket, battle ship..well,  you get the idea. I think this would be an excellent use of The Female Human’s time in her craft room.  If you can’t talk your humans into cardboard structures, they can also make creations with cat hair or even knit their own cat or make cat-like items such as cat bookends and a quick sew stuffed kitty.

Two Toddlers and a Cat, Not Such a Good Mix – Babyology

brown tabby with pink fairy wings
I am outraged my friends, just outraged! Take a look at the face of this completely defeated feline and tell me this is right. The human who contributed this photo says he has two toddlers and once a week he finds his cat like this. Fairy wings? Really? Sometimes the indignities we felines have to suffer is beyond the pale. I say felines unite against little humans who want to wrestle you into a costume. And to my pink fairy-winged friend in the photo I say, “Hold you head up man, be a cat of dignity!”

Oliver Opines on Family and Spring in Friendly Fill Ins #98

Hi Folks,

black and white cat eating wheat grassOliver here, just chillin’ and enjoying one of my favorite treats, wheat grass, while I purruse the neighborhood. We’re still waiting for spring at our house but the good news is almost half the snow is gone from the front yard!

I hope you enjoy this week’s fill ins and as always, you can go to McGuffy’s Reader and join the blog hop or join it at our friends blog 15andmeowing. Or, if you’re so inclined, you can leave your fill in answers in the comment section of this post. We love to have our friends meow at us!
Purrs & Head Bonks,

black and white cat Oliver

Here are the fill in questions:

1. I am the _________________ in my family.
2. I have __________________ sibling(s).
3. I am looking forward to                            this Spring.

4. The first sign of Spring this year was                      .

Here are my answers:

1.I am the most heat loving cat in my family . Whenever the humans look for me, they first check all the floor heat vents. They call me a “heat hog” as I’ll block a vent until my fur is so warm it’s almost on fire. And, speaking of fire, the fireplace is one of my favorite spots. Here is a photo of me blocking the vent under the kitchen sink.

img_2811

2.I have five siblings. Actually only one is a blood relative and that’s Alberto my brother (I know, we don’t look anything alike) but the other three tribe members are adopted siblings and we’re all a happy family.

img_1196

3.I am looking forward to butterfly chasing this spring. Our house has big windows and there are always birds and butterflies fluttering around. The Female Human managed to capture one of my fierce butterfly hunts from last summer.

4.The first sign of spring this year was not yet seen. Dude, we still have snow in the yard and not one robin has flown past our windows! Spring will take a bit longer in our neck of the woods. In the meantime, I’m hunkering down and staying cozy.

546cd8fc-571d-40dc-9c00-c8eb9b6fbc2a-180-00000000e573caec

Hello Friends,
So, my purrsonal assistant allowed herself to get a bit behind and my Wednesday deadline came and went with no blog post. She is redeeming herself (a bit) by getting my Wednesday Web Walk posted today but I guess better late than never!
I hope you enjoy this week;s wanderings,
Purrs & Head Bonks,
Siamese cat with blue eyes

I Don’t Normally Get Purrlitical but…..

One of the reasons my weekly Wednesday wanderings were late is because the female human was busy making this little video for a local candidate. There are no purrlitical parties mentioned so, since I deemed this a non-partisan video I thought I would share it. This candidate has a canine in the forefront of his campaign but it seems like he is garnering a feline constituency.

Man Quits His Job and Travels Australia in Camper Van With His Cat -Providr

man travels with his calico cat through Australia in a van

This man used to live in Hobart, Tasmania but  he decided to quit his job in May of 2015 sold his possessions, including his house, bought a camper van and began to travel Australia. He didn’t travel alone though. His cat Willow was with him for ever mile (or kilometer). He keeps a close eye on Willow but he also has her wear a tracking collar so he knows where she is all the time. Rich and Willow traveled over 50,000 kilometers and when they finally returned home, Rich decided they weren’t done with traveling yet. You can follow Rich and Willow’s adventures at VanCatMeow.com  You can sign up to have Willow send you postcards so you  never wonder again, “Where are  Rich and Willow?”

The Cats of Longwood Gardens – Atlas Obscura

black and white cat in longwood gardens

Here is another in my series on cats with jobs. These Longwood Garden cats have a pretty nice gig going. The Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania are filled with colorful plants (even some carnivorous ones!). The working felines at Longwood actually have two jobs. They patrol and take are of pest control and they are also feline ambassadors.  There are about 12 cats working there and are all loved and cared for. They are all very well loved rescue cats. They never used to wear collars but ever since a visitor took a Longwood feline worker home, thinking he was a stray. Thankfully, the purloined pussy cat was returned to his friends and cat co-workers.  I think this is one of the best feline jobs I’ve reported on yet!

Buddy The Adventure Cat Enjoys the Great Outdoors – Philly.com

Buddy the Adventure Cat

Meowza! Cats are getting more and more adventurous! Meet Buddy, a feline that likes to head out into the great outdoors. Buddy was rescued when he was 7-months old when he was found near an old warehouse. Someone put Buddy in a box and set it next to Steve Swartz’s desk. Good think Steve is a cat lover and Buddy had a forever home.

Buddy is now an adventure cat in training. On the day this article was written he was a little leery of the photographer which is why he’s peeking out of his carrier. I was very glad to hear that cats can be in training to be an adventure cat because I’m a wannabe kayaking cat and will begin my training this summer. Who knows, maybe I’ll bump into Buddy on a trail someday. Adventure on my feline friends!

British MPs Launch a Group Dedicated To Cat Welfare – inews.co.uk

The British folks always seem to be on the forefront of cat news. Members of British Parliament and their constituents have joined together with animal charities to campaign for better rights for cats in the UK. They will lobby for law changes to improve protection for cats and their owners and will focus on feline welfare and key issues affecting cats such as toxins in antifreeze and ownership of air guns. Cats do not have the same rights as dogs in road traffic accidents and they seek to change this.  APGOCATS has been created which will be dedicated to tackling matters affecting feline welfare. I guess when it comes to laws pertaining to felines, I am a purrlitical animal!

Hello Folks,
Alberto here doing this week’s fill ins. If you’d like to join the blog hop, head on over to McGuffy’s Reader or, to our friends who co-host the hop, 15andmeowing.  You can also add your “Seussian” fill ins in the comments in this blog post.

“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is you-er than you!
Dr. Seuss

Here are this week’s fill ins:

1. My favorite Dr. Seuss book is _________________.
2. The most interesting person I have ever met is ______________.
3. Besides books by Dr. Seuss, my favourite book as a child was                       .
4. Lately, I have been working on                          .

Here are my fill in responses:

1.My favorite Dr. Seuss book is The Cat In The Hat (of course, what did you expect me to say?)

img_1277

2.The most interesting person I’ve ever met is purrhaps the relative of my humans who has been staying with us. This human enjoys doing puzzles and I enjoy helping challenge him by knocking those little pieces on the floor or, in some cases snacking on them. This human foolishly attempts to protect his puzzles with cardboard (to no avail I might add). My humans have never introduced me to this wonderful feline activity.

img_1278

3.Besides books by Dr. Seuss, my favorite book as a child was not really a book at all. You see I was a 21st Century kitten and I spent less time reading and more time playing games on the iPad. I would like to report that as an almost adult cat, I have become more litter-ary.

img_1279

4.Lately, I have been working on getting The Female Human in gear to update our website (FelineOpines.com) . She added a nice section about Cat Cafes from Katzenworld and also linked to a website that lists cat cafes all over the world. Nice job Human.

2.This weekend I have plans to do absolutely nothing. I am a cat, the only plans I make are for meal times and purrhaps, if I’m feeling frisky, some play time.  My “do nothing” plan will be purrfect if I can convince The Male Human to “do nothing” with me.

3.I quite enjoy  my job as shower snoopervisor (with my brother Alberto). Although I must say, Alberto is a bit wacky. He loves water, even gets in the shower with The Male Human. I guess that’s why The Female Human is training him to go kayaking with her!

4.I believe that the fat “town squirrel” who tries to muscle our little pine squirrel away from the bird feeder should be a little less demanding and a little more thankful. If the feeder is empty, he stands on the railing of the upstairs deck and gives The Female Human attitude. The raccoons are far more polite and grateful.

Hello Friends,
Alberto here. It’s sure been cold in our neck of the woods. The main entertainment for img_2883The Tribe of Five lately has been watching The Male and Female human moving piles of that white stuff from the porches, decks and driveway. ‘Makes me very happy we are indoor felines who have a very efficient staff. It’s also nice to look out the living room windows and see deer and other woodland creatures walking by. I wonder if they have staff too.

It’s National Drink Wine With Your Cat Week – People

black and white cat with a glass of red wine

The holiday is news to me but the concept of cat wine is something I know a bit about. Now before anyone gets their whiskers in a twist, this article is about specially created, healthy wine made specifically for felines.  The Female Human sponsored a table at our local shelter fund-raiser and she purchased Appollo Peak cat wines such as Catbernet, Moscato and Pinot Meow and even some fancy kitty wine drinking glasses. She bought Meowijuana catnip cigars to fit the table theme. I wasn’t invited but I hear the table was pretty cool.img_2008

She did not however, buy enough cat wine for The Tribe of Five to taste test it so I am unable to comment on anything about it (hint to Female Human). And while I’m on the subject, why would The Female Human not invite The Tribe of Five to an ANIMAL shelter event?

Oh well, you can watch the video and see how three cat taste testers reacted to it.

Angel The Cat Is Living Her Best Life and She Has The Pictures To Prove It – Buzzfeed

Angel

This feline is living out her perfect life on Instagram. Purruse her photos and you’ll see she’s a connoisseur of cooking, brunch, drinking wine and sporting the latest fashion. I think Angel Bengal could be classified as a cat with a job, she.s a purrfessional model.

Those of you who follow my Wednesday wanderings know I img_2099am NOT a fan of dressing up felines but I must admit, there are some felines who quite enjoy the experience. This is our furrrend Coco, the Couture Cat. She loves wearing all kinds of ensembles. This is one of my favorite pics of her because she’s showing her “hippy” side. My philosophy is, “if the feline wants to dress up, let her!”

New cat fostering service for Sussex domestic abuse victims – Spirit FM

abusevictimsThis is a topic near and dear to the hearts of the Tribe of Five and our Female Human. So many times women who leave an abusive situation take their cats to the shelter because they are afraid the abuser will hurt the feline. Why should humans have to give away the one creature that gives them unconditional love when they are in these situations? It makes this kitty’s heart very sad.  That’s why I say “two paws up” to the good folks in England who have created Paws Protect, a cat fostering service for people leaving abusive situations. Last year they received 105 referrals and provided confidential cat fostering until the humans were safe and in new locations. Wouldn’t it be purrfect if every community had a program like this?

Cat grass arrangements are fun and functional – Union Sun & Journal

img_2232The Tribe of Five are quite fond of our cat grass. The humans leave it in strategic places so we can access it. You can see how Jasmine enjoys the green stuff.  Now cat grass is not catnip,  it’s a mixture of cereal grasses like rye, oats, barley and wheat. Our Humans get us organic wheat grass. The grass provides great nutrition and improves our appetite and helps with our digestion as well.  Our humans have grown grass in the past, but lately they’ve been taking the lazy way out and just pick it up in the organic section of our grocery store. But if your humans enjoy growing things, they can grow the grass at home. Do your humans give you grass? If not, you need to insist they do!

Modular, Interchangeable Cardboard Cat Dwellings Designed by Architects – Laughing Squid

cardboardCatDwellingsEvidently our Female Human isn’t the only one who is a bit OCD about home decor. She has relegated our well-loved and well used cat tree to a dark corner in the downstairs TV room. Really, how’s a feline supposed to have fun these days when humans are worried about their “aesthetic”? Well kitties rejoice, because two architects’ cats were having trouble adjusting to their new home. When the humans couldn’t find a cardboard product on the market that worked they decided to create their own and designed an entire system of cat dwellings. A Cat Thing was born (watch their cats enjoying the cardboard houses).  This system is so amazing I demanded…errr..requested that The Female Human order us some post-haste. Unfortunately it appears that you can only order and pay in Taiwanese currency. Never one to let any cat grass grow under her feet, The Female Human called Chewy.com. They don’t carry the items now but they have a pawsome system where you can give them the info and your email and when they get the item to sell, they notify you. The Female Human bonded with the Chewy service person, he has five cats too!
