Cat Gets Herself Hired at Nursing Home – Petcha

OreoA cat walked into a nursing home……and the rest is history. This beautiful feline, now known as Oreo, wandered into St. Augustine Health Ministries in Cleveland, Ohio one day and she worked her way into an important job.

This little black and white bundle of joy began her career hanging around the outside of the facility where she lived as a stray. Staff began feeding her and taking care of her and her next “promotion” came when she was invited inside.  She now works there full time and brings happiness to staff and the residents. There’s no limit to what a career-minded cat can do!

D.C. Shelter Has the Answer to Businesses’ Rodent Problems – Washington Business Journal

160712125203-cats-waiting-list-super-169The D.C. based, Humane Rescue Alliance is putting felines to work in local businesses. They provide businesses with resident felines, “hired” to patrol the property and keep rodents away. In return, feral cats  get homes — and they earn their keep.

The shelter provides spayed/neutered, microchipped vaccinated felines to the business. One ear is clipped to indicate that the cats are “employed”. The business signs an agreement to feed, shelter and care for their new hire for it’s lifetime. It’s a win-win situation. So far, two bars, an apartment complex, a real estate office, a brewery, two homes, a hardware store and a church have expressed interest. More and more cities are getting cats jobs in business and I say an enthusiastic “meow” to that!

Larry the Downing Street Mouser Under Scrutiny -Independent

larry-cat-paI’ve written about the feline employees in the British government before and Larry in purrticular. Larry is one of several Whitehall pets, which include dogs. Unfortunately, Larry has been caught in the act of non-mousing.  Rumor has it that rather than catching rodents, Larry is taking cat naps and has recently been caught in the act by a photographer, leading some in government to speculate that Larry may lack the killer instinct important for politics. A photographer recently reported that Larry came face to face with a tiny mouse, which he allowed to escape after he played with it a while.

Note to Larry…when you have a cushy government job,  don’t let them catch you napping!

Fish & Chips, Vancouver Island Explorer Kitties – Adventure Cats

30I love stories about adventure cats as much as I do stories about cats with jobs. These two felines, Fish and Chips  were adopted at different times, and are now the best of adventure-seeking friends.  The female human wanted to adopt a kitten but the male human (thinking he was really a dog person) wasn’t so sure. Then he discovered one of my favorite websites, Adventure Cats and he was convinced. First Fish came home with them. After deciding that having felines in the family was a great idea, they then adopted Chips. The adventures of these two and their humans are captured in stunning photography you can view at the Adventure Cats website. Reading about the life of these brave kitties makes me think I need to wander a bit further than our front garden!

Cat Islands in Japan – Creative Boom

c7ebc447205a9ea0a5f8d9812ce1664845f3667c_860Speaking of adventure, one photographer , Andrew Marttila’s photography series captures the feline residents of Cat Island in a beautiful pictorial album at Creative Boom.

Marttila went to Japan to see Cat Island. What he found out is that there are several cat islands off the Japanese coast and although there are beautiful felines to see, there are also issues in these places. The cats are not spayed and overpopulation is a problem, Still, the photographs are beautiful and a must see and these felines look very healthy and happy.

How Your Office Would Look If It Was Run By Cats – Bored Panda

The female human is a great fan of the cartoons of Tom Fonder, the creator of The Adventures of Business Cat. She likes him so much that she uses a “Boss Cat” as a branding tool for her Coworking Facility Tom Fonder has pondered important questions such as “What would it look like if a cat was the CEO of a major corporation?” He provides the answer in his wonderful cartoons and describes his Business Cat as a hard-hitting executive, not afraid to milk the corporation cash cow for his own purrrrposes.  I hope you enjoy the cartoons as much as our female human does, although as a real-life Boss Cat (the female human is only a purrrrsonal assistant and typist) I do think Mr. Fonder is a bit harsh about feline management skills.

Walk Through the Web Wednesday 3/15

Hello Friends,

Alberto here with my Wednesday purrrrusal of all things feline on the world wide web. Without fur-ther ado, let’s get started.

Cleveland Heights Cat Shreds on Skateboard – Cattime

We felines are an athletic lot and Daryl from Northeast Ohio proves my point! He’s quite adept at skateboarding and about as fearless a feline as you’d ever hope to meet.

Cats at Westminster Dog Show??!! – Today.com

WestminsterWell folks, it’s the end of an era and cats prove that they are taking over the world. The famous Westminster Dog show actually featured felines this year?  If you’re wondering why, allow me to enlighten you. Now before any of you canine fans get your tails in a twist, yes, for the first time in the events 140 year history felines were in attendance but they did not compete, they were part of a “meet the breeds” event. Still, not too shabby for us felines and who knows, today the Westminster Dog Show, tomorrow the Iditarod (snuggled safely inside the sleigh, of course.)

The NYPD’s Friskiest Officer – New York Post

NYPDcat
Those of you who follow my Wednesday posts know how much I love stories about working cats. This little guy. Martin, (officially Officer Martin D. Costanza) the handsome Tabby was found by some NYPD officers when he was a kitten. The officers convinced the powers that be that Officer Costanza would be a morale booster and that he is. Every morning, Officer Martin makes an appearance at roll call to “inspect everyone” and spread a little joy in the station house.

Japanese Company Fills Offices with Cats to Help Employees Unwind and Improve Productivity – Oddity Central

office-cats3While we’re on the subject as felines as job morale boosters, check out this Japanese office that “employs” nine felines. In addition to the furry feline employees, this office celebrates every day as “bring your pet to work day”. And if you aren’t impressed enough with this feline friendly employer, get a load of this…if you don’t have your own feline, the company offers a 5,000 yen monthly bonus ($42.00), called a “cat bonus” for anyone who is willing to adopt a cat of their own! I think a few U.S. companies ought to adopt this excellent practice!

Cabinet Office Cats Evie and Ossie Join Whitehall Mousers – BBC

WhiteHallCatsJust when you think you’ve read about all the pawlitical cats in the UK, there’s a new  job announcement. These two felines, hired as mousers, have the run of Whitehall and they seem to be enjoying their job.

Evie and Ossie are the first to come from the Celia Hammond Animal Trust – Larry, Gladstone and Palmerston (all purrlitical cat’s I’ve featured in the past) came from the better-known Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Evie is Ossie’s mother – a Cabinet Office spokeswoman said the cats would be looked after with donations from staff and were “settling in really well”. Concatulations to my moggie friends across the pond for their prestigious new careers.

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines

Hello World,
Alberto here. I’ve been purrrusing the internet looking for new and unusual feline themed stories and have some great ones for you this week.  As next week is what the humans refer to as a “holiday” my purrsonal assistant may not be available to post my regular Wednesday feature. We will post an original photo and send Howl-iday wishes though.
In the meantime, enjoy this week’s features.

Feature Shoot – Pounce by Seth Casteel

kitten flying through the air for the book "Pounce"The human photographer Seth Casteel, is known for his books, Underwater Dogs and Underwater Puppies and has now turned his attention to shelter kittens.  He captures some special shelter kittens with names like , Chicken, FruityPebble, Fuzzbucket, Doodlebug, and Jennifer, in mid-flight pounce. This wonderful human is highlighting the fact that there are between 30 and 40 million stray cats in the US. An estimated 1.4 million are euthanized in shelters, unable to find safe and loving homes. This book illustrates the joy of kittens and the fact that there are many cats and kittens who need forever homes in shelters all across the country. Every one of us in #TheTribeOfFive were adopted and we are all for anything that helps other felines find forever homes too.

Evening Standard – 10 adorable photographs of London’s most famous pub cats

black English pub catAs my regular readers know, this working feline loves stories about other working cats. This is a pictorial tribute to felines that work in “Boozers” as the English refer to the establishments also known as pubs. I think working in a pub would be quite interesting and I wonder, do they get tips like the human bartenders do?

Mental Floss – 11 Brilliant Gifts for the Cat In Your Life

tabby kittens with Christmas hatsThe #TribeOfFive is pretty spoiled and we have lots of great toys and feline themed items. As a matter of fact, number 8 on the list is something we already have (and have reviewed), Music for Cats (we recommend it highly). There were many on this list that I found appealing but I finally decided the KitNipBox was my favorite. It works on so many levels, we felines get a gift a month and a portion of the monthly cost is donated to animal welfare organizations. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

What Do You Give The Cat Owner Who Has Everything?  Katzenworld

Orange tabby with meowlingual cat meow translator‘Lest you think I’m completely selfish, I am also interested in what gifts are best for feline-loving humans. Our friends at Katzenworld and their guest poster, Mike James (who describes himself as a tech-obsessed, cat-loving content writer working with Best VPN) provide some excellent choices for your favorite humans this Christmas. I purrrused the list and can’t decide what I like best, the remote cat toys or the Meowlingual, cat translator. While it would be pawsome to have red dots and other kitty delights moving around the house while the humans are at work, it would be very handy for my humans to have a Meowlingual translator too. Just think, I could sit on the computer keyboard and dictate my Walk Through the Web Wednesday posts to my purrsonal assistant!

7 Sounds That Cats Make And What They Mean

gray kitten talking into a microphoneWhile I’m on the subject of translating “cat-speak” if you don’t have a Meowlingual cat translator, you can still learn how to understand a bit of feline talk.  You will be able to discern the difference between the trill, the bip, the yowl, the chatter and other feline expressions after reading this post by Care2. At our house, every one of #TheTribeOfFinve has some Siamese heritage and that means some are quite “yakky”. Sometimes it’s almost like a feline symphony at our place!

Oliver’s Concession Speech

img_1390Dear Friends,
While I always thought getting a kitten into the White House was a bit of a stretch, my running mate Olive, from Three Chatty Cats and I were always hopeful. We do hope that there will be a “First Feline” in Washington who will take our needs and concerns under advisement.

The Kitty Cat Party will rise again and in the meantime, untitledthanks for your support and today, be sure and thank a veteran for their service!

dailymailegyptiancatThe Daily Mail- From Viking cats to felines of the ancient mariner: DNA analysis from 30 archaeological sites reveals how cats spread around the world

This one is for the more intellectual felines in my readership. The article states that “The history of cat domestication still remains understudied, especially compared to that of dogs.” and I couldn’t agree more. We felines have been earning our keep for centuries, the article says that cats may have lived among ancient farmers, mariners, and even Vikings. I should disclose however, that #TheTribeOfFive are not great mousers and our humans had to call someone to take care of their mouse problem in their old house.

BookRiot.com – Cat Cosplay

harbingerrenegadesCosplay for cats? Well, why not?  Valiant Comics’ just announced their latest series of cat cosplay variant covers. Variant covers, in the comic book world, are when a comic company ships multiple covers for their first printing and more often than not, the covers only make sense if you link the various covers together. (Who knew a feline had such comic book knowledge?). I purrrrrused the covers and had a hard time selecting my favorite but I think it has to be Harbinger Renegades (shown at left).

You must check this out for yourself, they are purrrrfectly wonderful!

Amelia’s Story-Part 1

Hello,
As my regular readers know, the felines are the voice of this blog but the felines have graciously allowed me to write this story because it’s very important, not just for felines but for the humans who love them.

There are two things you need to know before you begin reading this piece.  First, this is one of the hardest articles I’ve ever written.  I still can’t write it without shedding tears.  Second, and most important, this story has a happy ending and hopefully a lesson and comfort for those who have been in the same situation, so please stay the course. Amelia’s story sparked my passion for the fear free movement and all the benefits it brings to our fur kids.

Anita

Meeting Lily

I attended a gala shopper’s evening at our local shelter’s thrift store.  As I admired all the displays and fantastic prices, one of the shelter Board members approached me and said,  “You have to meet a kitten.” I never say no to making a new feline friend so before you could say “meow” I was in the kitten room looking at the most unusual, sweet little round-eyed kitten.

LilyKitten

Lily as a kitten

It took about 10 minutes for me to be completely smitten. My husband and I had been discussing bringing a kitten into our feline tribe and so I quickly snapped the photo you see on the left and texted him, “I found our kitten.”

Kittens Must Always Come in Pairs

It took several days of conversation before my husband agreed that we could adopt Lily, with one caveat; we had to adopt another kitten as well. He had a good point as integrating a kitten into a household of one seventeen-year old cat and two ten-year old cats might be hard for a single kitten. Two kittens would have each other to play and bond with and the older guys would be spared some of the kitten shenanigans. I agreed and we set off to bring our new fur kids home.

Amelia

Amelia

We came home with two fur babies that afternoon. Lily and a spunky little Tabby we named Amelia after Amelia Earhart because she fearlessly flew all over the house and ended up in the highest places.

As much as I loved Lily, it was Amelia who bonded with me the most. Wherever I was, she was there, keeping me company on a stool in the kitchen while I cooked, always near, always interested in what I was doing, always seeking me out.

Both kittens bonded well, with each other, the rest of the cats and with us. Amelia’s, smart and sassy personality and her eyes that seemed to speak to me inspired the writing of this blog. I never tired of watching her exhibit her own brand of catitude. And, as a fiction writer, I could just imagine what this little character was thinking.

Happy Kittens, Happy Feline Family

As Amelia’s  distinctive personality inspired me I created the blog, “Amelia’s World”. She  shared her opinion about visiting the vet, her life with the other felines and anything else that captured her interest.  Lily was content to live a more private life away from public view.

The feline “elders” were happy to engage with the kittens on their own terms and pleased that the little ones had each other to play with. All was well with our feline tribe.

Our Sorrow

PRoses

Miss P.

Fast forward one year. Our beloved Miss P., Alpha of the tribe, died at the age of 18. We were inconsolable. She was our first fur kid, the first year of our marriage.

Her death changed the dynamic of our feline tribe. Our now ten-year old male, Tucker, slipped into the role of Alpha. He was the only male and although he’s  an easy-going, no drama kind of guy, his sixteen pounds helped him secure the position with little effort on his part.

Tucker’s sibling, Jasmine took it all in stride. As long as she could come out on the upstairs deck with us, sit on a chair and watch the birds, her life was complete.  Lily had no leadership aspirations but it was a completely different situation with Amelia.

Our Struggle

BigFootTuck

Tucker

No matter how hard Amelia fought to take control,  and fight she did, Tucker wasn’t having it. He quickly let Amelia know that he was now the Boss Cat.  We watched helplessly as our previously harmonious house became a battle field.

Amelia’s frustration exhibited itself in numerous ways. One was aggression toward the other cats.  Tucker was too big to bully. Lily stood up to Amelia and refused to back down.  Poor Jasmine however, was too timid to stand her ground. She had never been bullied before and  her sweet, shy nature made her a perfect target. Her response to Amelia’s aggression was to run from  and hide. The  decision to run emboldened Amelia, who quickly realized that Jasmine was the best target for her frustration.

The battles became louder and more horrific and created an untenable situation for Jasmine, who retreated to our bedroom and ultimately took up residence there.

IMAG0004Without access to Jasmine, Amelia’s frustration grew. She went from my sweet, funny and mischievous little cat to an upset and angry cat. She exhibited her unhappiness by peeing all over the house. Each morning and evening became a black light excursion with long cleaning sessions. We spent hundreds of dollars on pheromone plug-ins, air cans, moving furniture, buying new area rungs and even new furniture. We spent extra time with Amelia, playing with her and loving her, attempting to calm  her aggression. We also made numerous visits to the vet to ensure there were no underlying health issues.

We loved this smart, sassy Tabby and despite the situation we now found ourselves in, we were committed to do whatever it took to remedy the situation. Almost a year and hundreds of dollars later, nothing had changed. We were all, human and feline, living in a continual state of  stress and fear.

Swag Bag Report PetSafe Water Filtration Part 3-Bad Kittens, Bad Kittens-The Saga Ends

Hello Folks,
It’s Tucker again. I had hoped that the saga of the PetSafe water filter would have been put to rest but no-when you live in a house with kittens you must expect the unexpected.

The female human wrote to the nice PetSafe people to see if she could purchase another plug in thingy to attach to the filter. Sadly, the part is not available. This information proved to be moot when the humans discovered that Al and Oliver had jumped on the counter, whacked the box with the broken filter to the floor and proceeded to play with (and break) the filter.  All the little black things in the filter were scattered around the kitchen and the male human spent some quality time crouched on the floor with a little broom and a scooper thing (but not the same scooper they use for our litter boxes).

Oliver the black and white kitten sleepingThere are no photos of the destruction but I am including a photo of the terrible twosome who were exhausted after their shenanigans. Note the complete lack of remorse.  At least this shows the humans hard work to create a fear-free environment in our home is successful.

Alberto the siamese kitten streches out for a nap
Will there be a replacement filter? Only time will tell but I would highly recommend that the humans wait until these little rascals settle down a bit.

It’s hard being the Alpha in this household, my kitten training work is not done.

BlogPaws Swag Bag Report

Hello Human’s and furry friends,

BlogPaws vendor swag giftsTucker here. The female human went away for 5 days leaving us in the care of the male human. Now the male human is a great guy but the level of service we receive from him is nowhere near what the female human provides.

So, one strike against the female human for leaving us to suffer sub-par service. Then she tells us she has been to a place called #BlogPaws in a very hot spot called Phoenix. My only question is..how does this affect me?

The female human spoke about something called “swag” that would arrive on Thursday. I was under the assumption that “swag” was what I displayed when I marched my 16 pounds of awesome alpha-ness through the house. But I digress.

Today ( Thursday) a large box arrived at our door and this was the “swag” of which the female human spoke.  Food, toys, organic catnip, ….this “swag” is good stuff!

I’m sharing some photos of the quality control inspections conducted by the Tribe of Five and we’ll be blogging and reporting on the amazing products and services from the human’s  #BlogPaws experience soon.
