A Tonk’s Tale-Wordless Wednesday

tonkstailheadernew2016afinalThis photo array of a feline and a squirrel is awesome!  Our squirrel/bird feeder is on the upstairs deck and we don’t get so close to our wildlife visitors. I am considering having my purrrrsonal assistant make a poster from these fantastic photos and hang them over one img_1924of our litter boxes. Also, I must say that the “press feline” looks quite dapper here and I am reconsidering my attire as official press secretary for the Kitty Kat Party.

P.S. If you want to see the pitiful squirrel viewing the Tribe of Five is forced to endure, check out this short video.

David Tennant-Narrates Anti-Stress Films For Cats And Dogs

actor david tennant narrates a film for nervous catsNow here is an idea whose time has come. We felines (and my canine friends) have a lot to be stressed out about like door bells, vacuum monsters, thunder, well you get the idea. One would think that a feline’s humans (particularly humans who pride themselves on keeping a “fear free” home would have better sense than to put on cat ears and paint their face like a feline. I kid you not, siamese cat and woman with cat ears and cat make-upthis is what the feline human did on their Howl-o-ween holiday. Nearly gave me a heart attack. Suffice to say there will be no more of that in our house. The photo is of her trying to apologize.

Stylist-Revealed: the most popular cat and dog names of 2016

I don’t know about you but I often wonder where in the heck the humans got the names they call us. Our humans have long stories about how this happened and they never puppy and kitten cuddling togetherchange our names from the shelter names right away but wait awhile to get to know us better. My name, for instance, is because of my sleek physique and my penchant for running around the house like a speed demon. The male human loves bicycle racing and so they called me Alberto Contador. I know, pretty dumb huh?. I can say that I’m a bit annoyed that my brother, Oliver’s name appears as number four on the list. Seriously? We many need to renegotiate this naming thing.

Houzz – 15 Design-Friendly Places to Hide the Cat Litter Box

I’m throwing this one in for the humans. Frankly, I could care less where our litter boxes litter box built into the bathroom wallare located or what they look like.  Just keep ’em clean and easy to get in to. Period. but the female human spends much time and money on litter boxes that don’t look like litter boxes and ensuring they are placed in areas where company will never see them. So humans, enjoy.

Mental Floss – Chicago’s Secret Weapon Against Rats: Feral Cats

This is my favorite find this week. We have feral cats that visit our house and the female human always offers them food, water and shelter but sadly, we have coyotes and large birds of prey where we live and the feral cats never seem to hang around long enough for her to trap them. Chicago is solving a terrible problem and helping feral cats at the same time. Around our neck of the woods, those kinds of working cats are called barn cats, looks like some of these Chicago felines could be called Tavern cats.

Venkman the tabby who lives at Empirical Brewery in ChicatoOne of these tavern cats is named Venkman and you can read about the great new life he and other cats have thanks to Empirical Brewery. (Note to self, tell the humans to buy this beer). Actually, these felines have a great life, regular meals, a safe and warm place to sleep and a job to do. Two paws up for Empirical Brewery and all the other Chicago businesses who are giving feral cats homes and jobs.  Oh, and by the way, Venkman is on Twitter at @VenkmanTheCat.  Maybe some other cities will try this excellent program.

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines

Hello World, Alberto Here,
I have officially ended my blogging strike. The humans heard me loud and clear as regards my distaste for the ridiculous dinosaur costume they tried to make me wear. At The Trive of Five we have a “no costume” policy that is now enforced after this recent debacle.

As a result of this strange holiday the humans seem to enjoy, I decided to devote this Wednesday to their ridiculous celebration.

I also wanted to point out that this feline is an equality opportunity blog writer and today I have featured a blog by mice as well as dog posts.

Enjoy.

img_2553The Great Halloween Indignity – Feline Opines

My first listing will be a bit of shameless self-promotion as I am featuring my post The Great Halloween Indignity which started my campaign against the human’s Halloween ridiculousness.

How Black Cats Came to Halloween – Hartz

My next selection is from the good folks at Hartz  “How Black Cats Came to Halloween” Black cats have a bad reputation, especially during this time of year. The Black cat in the gardenfemale human who is my purrsonal assistant for blogging (can’t use a keyboard without opposable thumbs) got a bit misty-eyed when she saw the photo on the Hartz blog and told me about a black cat that used to live with the humans named Buster. I sure wish I could have met him, he sounds like a great guy. I’ve included a photo of our Buster as an homage to the big guy.

Orange Tabby Kitten and pumpkinHalloween Safety Tips for Your Cat – Pet MD

There are many written about the perils and terrors of the noisy Fourth of July celebrations the humans love so much but few about keeping cats safe on Halloween. Well, I found an excellent article from Pet MD called “Halloween Safety Tips for Your Cat”. ‘Some really good stuff there and I made sure both humans read it.

Halloween: The Well Dressed Cat – Adventures in Cheeseland

Hedgehog in tutuAfter I wrote about my costume indignity, I heard from some friends over at Adventures in Cheeseland which is probably the only WordPress blog hosted by mice. Now the Cheeseland folks are very willing to allow all species to have a say on the blog and they referred me to a guest blog post , “Halloween: The Well Dressed Cat” by the feline, Tiffany Furreau, consultant on the “Real Cats of Beverly Hills” who blogs about the latest trends in cat costumes. I will share Adventure in Cheeseland’s disclaimer at the beginning of the blog “Please do not let your humans see these pictures” (they are not fans of the cat costume craze either! (The photo is Horatio (Lord Nelson) Hedgehog from the Adventures in Cheeseland crew. Evidently hedgehogs are not immune to the Halloween costume indignities either.)

dogs in ghost costumesThe Telegraph – 25 of the Best Dressed Dogs at the New York City Dog Parade

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t feature some canines in Halloween finery. This selection is from The Telegraph  “25 of the Best Dressed Dogs at the New York City Dog Parade”. This article features photos from this year’s parade and I must say some of them are quite clever. I would also note that these canines look a lot less put out about the whole costume situation than their feline friends.

Well, folks that’s it for the week, all I have to say about this Halloween holiday thing is this, cut the wires in the scary doorbell and keep a bowl of tasty canine/feline/hedgehog/mouse etc. treats handy for your furry family members.

Until next Wednesday,

Your un-costumed friend,

Changing Your Purrspective

Hello World,

Alberto here. I have been observing the humans lately and the female human appears to be in a state other humans refer to as “stressed out”.  As a feline, I am unfamiliar with this. It is not in the feline nature, particularly the nature of a spoiled indoor feline living in a fear-free environment to have this “stressed out” condition.

Still, I care deeply for the feline human and pondered how I might go about assisting her. One morning it occurred to me. She needs a change of purrspective!

As the female human is on the “shortish” side (she requires a stool to reach the highest parts of the cabinets) and definitely not as coordinated or flexible as this feline , I decided to help her by finding her a new purrspective.

Siamese cat on top of refrigerator This was no easy feat.  had to balance myself on a stack of antique suitcases in the corner of the dining room. From there I had to jump up to the top of the buffet and make my way through the slalom course of  numerous crystal and silver candlesticks . From the buffet I leaped to the top of the kitchen cabinets and from there, I was at the highest point of the house.

I made myself comfortable on top of the big, white cat food keeper and was delighted to find that if I kicked my foot in just the right way, I could actually open the door of the cat food keeper. This was a bonus.

As I settled in to contemplate my lofty purrspective endeavoring to find some insight for the female human I heard a gasp and then “Alberto!”

Siamese cat on top of refrigerator Evidently the female human did not appreciate my efforts to assist her. She dragged her little stool over, stood on it and dragged me from my spot.

That’s the thanks a feline gets for trying to help the humans with a problem. I am sorely disappointed that she did not appreciate my efforts. Next time I will show the same lack of concern as my brother Oliver, who is always more interested in his own state of being than that of anyone else.

Good-bye for now, your Friend,

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 10/5/16

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines

Hello Folks,
Alberto here. It’s my weekly purrrrusal of the web for all things feline . I’m bringing you four of my faves, enjoy!

My first pick is from our friends at Catwoods – Tornado on the Ground: Tuscaloosa, April 27, 2011

catwoodstornadoThe female human has been praying for friends in Florida because there is a big storm coming, she prayed for friends in Mississippi and Louisiana not too long ago. This made me wonder, what happens during these bad weather things, what do the humans do, how do they protect their furry family members and can things come out okay? This story was very helpful and tells the story of humans, canines and felines who went through a terrible weather situation. To all my friends, furry, feathered, human and otherwise who are in the way of bad weather, stay safe!

Playful Kitty – Easy Pet Hair Removal with BobSweep Pet Hair

dexter-standing-on-bob-1The female human is constantly bemoaning the cat hair left on furniture, clothing and other spaces in our house. Every time she takes out the vicious vacuum monster we all head downstairs. I must confess, I wasn’t sure I wanted to feature any post that talked about the dreaded vacuum monster but after reading this one, I am hopeful. The felines in this house don’t seem to be terrorized and there are photos of them actually standing on the thing. Could this be the solution the female human is searching for? If it isn’t as vicious as our current vacuum monster, I just might suggest to the male human that it would make a nice gift for the female human.

Pam Johnson-Bennett -20 Things Your New Kitten Wants You to Know

oliverundertablealMy brother Oliver and I came to live with the Tribe of Five a year ago. It has only been about three years since the humans brought a rescue kitten into the family but they still were a bit rusty. Not all kittens are the same and kittens aren’t just miniature cats. Whether you’ve had many kittens in your home or your’re a feline newbie, you will find something helpful in this article. Oh and the photos are me (on the left) and Oliver (on the right) the first week we came to live with The Tribe of Five.

The Dodo – Cat Convinces Lambs to Follow Him Everywhere

orange tabby and sheepI’m a sucker for stories about felines doing fantastic things. The human author, Stephen Messenger, tells a tale of cat in New Zealand who moved from his mundane indoor status to Leader of the Lambs. Just goes to show you, we cats can be anything we set our minds to being!

Well, that’s it for this Wednesday, purrs to you all.
Your Friend,

It’s Linky Party Time 10/1/16

Hello All,
Siamese Cat in the sunJasmine here. This is my first time hosting a linky party and I’m quite excited. The photo to the left is of me waiting for the guests to show up for the party and then Alberto told me it’s a virtual party and that no real guests actually show up. Sheesh, then why do they call it a party and get a cat all excited for company and treats?

Oh well, it’s still cool being a host and I got to choose my three top picks from the last party . Enjoy!
jazz_signature

My picks from the last Linky Party:

Wag N Woof Pets – Nose Work

black and white dog in harnessI must admit, I do have a bit of admiration for canines that can find stuff just by sniffing it out. We felines like to sniff stuff too but we rarely act upon any scents we discover unless it’s particularly stinky food, then we eat it. Luke here is pretty smart and his human is teaching him how to find the scented thing. Who knew you could train a dog’s nose?

Travel with Barley – The Longest Days

img_9252This is a wonderful story about a female human who could not let a dog with many special needs go without help. It’s also the story of fostering (something my humans were a miserable failure at and why we now have Alberto and Oliver in our house…but that’s a story for another time.) Anyway, how she works with this underweight and frightened dog warms my paws and it makes me happy to know that there are humans who would work so hard to help a dog or cat become the best they can be and ready for a fur-ever home.

Five Sibes – The Groomer Man Cometh

fur from dog gooming is enough to make another dogI must say that reading this post made me realize that canines and felines have a lot in common when it comes to being groomed. First thing-we don’t like it. Second thing-dogs get “paw-dicures” too, who knew?  I know our humans gripe about the amount of fur The Tribe of Five leave around the house but after seeing the photo on the left (enough fur to make another dog) I believe my humans should be thanking their lucky stars that they have felines and not Siberian Huskies in the house!

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines

Hello Friends, Furry, Feathered and Otherwise,
Alberto here. It’s time to tell you what items caught my fancy during the week. It’s been a little hectic here. The humans have had a week of visitors and this prompted The Tribe of Five to work on our next blog entry, “The Felines Guide to Being the Purrfect Houseguest”…stay tuned.

But I digress, here are my Walk Through the Web Wednesday picks and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Antibiotic-Free, Hormone-Free, Organic Pet Food | Does it Matter? – Raising Your Pets Naturally

healthy food,. antobiotic, hormone freeOur humans are very purrrticular when it comes to feeding us. As a matter of fact, the male human won’t let the female human select a new organic and healthy food for us without consulting him (he’s our official feline dietitian) . It isn’t easy for the humans to know if they’re making the best food choices for us. We’re no help, as far as we’re concerned, the nastier and stinkier the food, the better it is. Raising Your Pets Naturally know a lot about this and they offer some very helpful advice in this post.

Cats as Therapists? You betcha’, just ask Sparkle Cat – Sparkle Cat.com

summer092716aYou hear a lot about therapy dogs but therapy cats rarely get a mention. We felines know how to make humans feel calm and loved. This story is about Sparkle Cat’s visit to a school for children with developmental disabilities. You will love her tale of how the healing purr works magic.

How Smart Is Your Cat? – Pet MD

ginger tabby reading book with glassesOk, I admit it, I was deeply offended by this headline but then the human told me to check my catitude and purruse the article a bit further and I’m glad I did. There’s lots of good info here people and the article explains our brains and provides some interesting tidbits…like did you know that cats dream?

Crash Test Kitty Help Saves Lives – Conscious Cat

crash test kitty with canine friendNow before you go getting your tail in a twist, this is not a real kitty but this faux feline does save lives. My feline friends, have you ever wondered about that carrier that you are often unceremoniously stuffed into? Did you think, “Gee, I hope this thing is safe”. Well there are people who think about that all the time and they use the crash test kitty to make sure all of us felines are safe. (Note, crash test kitty is on the right, the canine is an anonymous friend)

The Top Ten States for Cat Lovers – Estately

sign says keep calm and love catsNow this really has me concerned. After checking the map, every state surrounding us is evidently a cat lover state, but not ours!  The Tribe of Five is seriously considering petitioning the humans for a move. North, south, east or west is fine, just a state that is a designated cat lover state!  Is your state a cat loving state?

remember me thursday shelter eventRemember Me Thursday – Three Chatty Cats

Three Chatty Cats’ mission is to promote and support cat rescues and adoptions by highlighting rescue groups, sharing adoption stories, and showcasing individuals who do their part to help cats in need. They remind us that tomorrow., Thursday September 22 is “Remember Me Thursday® which is a global awareness campaign uniting individuals and pet adoption organizations around the world as an unstoppable, integrated voice advocating for orphan pets to live in forever homes, not die waiting for them. You can enter a photo of your shelter pet and win food, toys or pet insurance for your local shelter! Our human sent photos in for #TheTribeOfFive. You have until September 30th so start posting!

dailymailegyptiancatThe Daily Mail- From Viking cats to felines of the ancient mariner: DNA analysis from 30 archaeological sites reveals how cats spread around the world

This one is for the more intellectual felines in my readership. The article states that “The history of cat domestication still remains understudied, especially compared to that of dogs.” and I couldn’t agree more. We felines have been earning our keep for centuries, the article says that cats may have lived among ancient farmers, mariners, and even Vikings. I should disclose however, that #TheTribeOfFive are not great mousers and our humans had to call someone to take care of their mouse problem in their old house.

Jacke the tabby cat sitting in catnip in the gardenTabby Cats, Cheetahs & Zebras Have Something Very Special In Common – I Heart Cats

Here’s another one for my readers with inquiring minds. Now I get the connection with house felines and cheetahs, but zebras too? Veeeeerrryyy interesting, yep, it’s all in the genes.
The photo to the left is my feline cuz Jake, who is helping himself to the catnip crop.

BookRiot.com – Cat Cosplay

harbingerrenegadesCosplay for cats? Well, why not?  Valiant Comics’ just announced their latest series of cat cosplay variant covers. Variant covers, in the comic book world, are when a comic company ships multiple covers for their first printing and more often than not, the covers only make sense if you link the various covers together. (Who knew a feline had such comic book knowledge?). I purrrrrused the covers and had a hard time selecting my favorite but I think it has to be Harbinger Renegades (shown at left).

You must check this out for yourself, they are purrrrfectly wonderful!

Welcome to the Linky Party

Hello All,

Alberto the Siamese cat sits on the wallAlberto here. My purrrsonal assistant has been a bit overwhelmed (humans, they’re always running around in a panic) so she’s getting our Linky info up a little late . (I’ve been sitting here waiting for quite a while!)

Please join the party so we can get to know you better. And hey…nothing against the canines but we need to hear from some felines! Meow on!

Your friend,

alberto the Siamese cat

Since I’m the host I get to pick my faves from the last Linky Party and here they are.

Storm Preparedness For Your Pet-Are You Ready?  From Animal Bliss

storm preparedness for petsWe’ve heard a lot about pets in the most recent disasters, flooding in Louisiana, fires in California and earthquakes in Italy. My humans say we should always have a plan for #TheTribeOfFive and this article provides some excellent tips. We even had some dogs from the Louisiana floods flown to our shelter in Idaho!

christmas gifts ideas for your veterinarianGifts for Your Veterinarian – PetFaves

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that I HATE the ride to the humans in the white coats, but once I’m there, I really like the white coated humans that care for us so I think a Christmas gift is a great idea! The place with the white coats where we go is fear free, great calming smells, soft toys and places to hang out and even music for cats!

wag n woof pets beagle walking in the woodsMiddle Dog – Wag N Woof Pets

Here at #TheTribeOfFive we’ve learned that heirachy makes a difference. The humans are always concerned that all five of us receive love and attention so no one feels left out. This article talks about sharing the love in your furry family.

Walk Through the Web Wednesday 9/7

siamese cat in black and white with blue eyes, Alberto, Feline Opines
Hello Friends,
Furry, feathered and otherwise. Alberto here with my weekly purrrrusal of the web. I found some great links and hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Sparkle Cat -Resisting the Piece de Resitance

Sparkle Cat in a mardi gras costumeMy first pick is from the gorgeous and world-renown fashionista feline-Sparkle Cat. In the humble opinion of this young (and very handsome)  cat, Miss Sparkle is a beauty (although I am also greatly enamored with Coco the Couture Cat as well). In this blog entry, Sparkle shows her sense of humor and reminds us that even famous cats have to dry the line somewhere!

Chirpy Cats – Caturday Art, The Cat and the Printer

cat attacking a printerGeorge the cat makes some very good points about living with the bothersome and noisy machine the humans call the “printer” and which George refers to as the “purrrrinter”. The humans seem to have some sort of love of machines that annoy (or terrify) felines. I myself could write a soliloquy about the “vacuum monster”: and the fear it strikes in the hearts of The Tribe of Five.

Mudpie Interviews Sula, the Old Mission San Juan Bautista Cat

I’m very impressed with Mudpie’s interview techniques. I always appreciate a feline journalist that presents a story in an interesting and compelling way. I purred with joy after reading this beautiful interview. Sula is one amazing feline. She’s had cancer twice and survived and now has the title of “Comforter-in-Chief at the mission. Her job is to provide a loving feline touch for anyone there who is in need of it. I know many cats with jobs but Sula has a very special one. And, Sula has a book entitled, “Surviving Cancer, Healing People, One Cat’s Story”. I can’t wait to have my human read it to me!

The Way of Cats…Will He Miss Me?

The female human has been listening to the podcasts of this lady for quite some time and she’s learned quite a bit about the complicated feline mind. I liked this post because it talks about how we felines feel when someone we love goes away. We are complicated creatures!

Well, that’s it for this Wednesday. ‘Hope you enjoy my selections.
