A Feline’s Guide to Treadmill Snoopervising Your Human

Hello All,

Alberto here. The female human ordered a huge heavy walking machine (she calls it a treadmill) recently and The Tribe of Five watched with interest as she and the male human put this monstrosity together.  Our snoopervising duties did not end when the thing was assembled, nope, that’s when our work really began. Having done these duties for a month now, Oliver and I thought we’d share this manual with our other feline friends who have humans who use these machines.

Siamese cat sits on rug pulled over for treadmillStep 1 – Clear the Way

The human must move the rug in order to place a thing she calls a mat on the floor. Lacking opposable thumbs, I am limited in what I can help with but I do make sure she has moved the rug over correctly. To indicate my approval, I will sit on the folded carpet.

Step 2 – Placing The Mat

The human then takes a long rubber thing she calls a “mat” out of the closet and sets it down on the bare floor. Oliver’s job is to make sure the mat thingy is placed correctly and that it hasn’t lost any of its softness.  Once Oliver stops rolling on the mat, the human may then remove him for the next step.

Black and white cat inspects treadmillStep 3 -Placing the Machine on the Mat

Once Oliver is removed from the mat, the human rolls the big walking machine over and prepares to lower the bottom half. Once the machine is placed purrfectly, Oliver does a quick walk-around and indicates when he is satisfied that the placement is correct.

Step 4-Assess if the Walking Machine is ready for use

After Oliver has given a “paws up” to placement, the human lowers the moving part of the machine. It is then my job to carefully observe all areas of said machine before we allow the human to get on it.

white sneaker on a treadmillStep 5 -Turn the Human Loose

After all feline inspection is completed indicate to your human that the machine may now be used. This indication may take many forms; we prefer stretching out across the length of the machine as our signal. you may find something more suitable for your household. The human (once she removes us) may then begin the walking procedure.

Step 6 -Safety First

Even though the human is now using the machine, there is still an obligation on behalf of the household felines to stay and make sure the human doesn’t do anything stupid (I Siamese under green chairmean dangerous). You must remain until the walking is finished. We prefer two observation options, one is under the green chair and the other is as far away from the thing as we can get.cats on furniture watching

Siamese cat sitting on treadmikllStep 7 – Cool Down Time

When the human finishes she observes something she refers to as “cool down time”. This is when she sits on a chair and breathes heavily. In order to ensure that she does not overdo, you must station yourself on the moving machine until proper cool down time has been observed.

three cats on a red sofaStep 8 -It Isn’t Just About The Human

Snoopervising is hard work!  When all equipment is put away and the rug and the furniture are returned to the proper places.  You should then head upstairs and take a 4 or 5 hour snooze to recover.

Oliver and I hope these instructions will prove helpful to all our feline friends and their humans with moving machines. If you have any feline snoopervising tips you’d like to add, please give us a meow.

Walk Through The Web, July 5, 2017

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Friends, Furry or Otherwise,
I told my purrrsonal assistant that there would be no slacking and just because she had what the humans refer to as a “holiday” day off yesterday, I still expected her to ensure my blog post was taken care of. I mean, how can you have a “walk through the web Wednesday” on a Thursday? I am happy to say that she managed to get my notes translated so here’s my weekly view of my favorite things feline on the web.
Your Friend,

I am always pleased to see humans coming up with new and innovative feline-related events. This one in Philly is something I hope will sweep the nation.  It’s a 3-day feline festival that will feature cats looking for a furever home, vendors selling all sorts of kitty stuff and stuff for those who love kitties and they’ll even have some feline celebrities.

gray cat and human get matching purple nail polishFelines and Humans Now Can Have Matching Manicures – Bustle

Since I’m a manly cat, I wasn’t too sure what to think about this. I polled the two felines in The Tribe of Five, Jasmine and Lily.  Lily is so adverse to having her nails touched she freaks out so the humans have to have the vet do it. Needless to say, Lily had nothing nice to say about this idea. Jasmine is much more mellow and she’s a bit of a fashionista so she was okay with the idea as long as the procedure didn’t require her to be shoved in a kennel and taken in the metal machine with wheels. Maybe city kitties will like this better than rural kitties.

Cats With Jobs – We’re More Than Pretty Faces

Those of you who follow my Wednesday wanderings know I love to feature working felines, so here are my two faves for this week.

black cat named Stacks sleeps on library cartMeet Four Professional Library Cats – Care2

Three of these litter-ary felines are in the United States and one works at a library in Russia. All of their job descriptions are similar, with each bringing their own unique purrrsonality to their workplace. I’m featuring a photo of the feline with the best library name, meet Stacks.

black and white tuxedo cat finds lost catsHenry the Search and Rescue Professional Pet Detective – Cattime.com

While all working cats have important jobs, I must say, Henry has a SUPER important one. The article talks about one of Henry’s many successes, where he sniffed a parking lot and around a deck to find a frightened kitten. He picked up the kitten’s scent and waved his tail, his signal to the humans that means “I found him!”.  The kitten was hiding in a pile of trash, Henry’s human had the kitten’s human call the frightened little guy over a speaker, when the kitten came out, Henry’s human grabbed him and returned him to his humans.  Way to go Henry!

My final section for this week is entitled, “we don’t need opposable thumbs”.  You will marvel at what these two felines accomplished.

Cat Learns to Knead Dough With YouTube Video – Food and Wine

black and white cat learns how to knead dough on youtubeMy humans watch food programs on the big black screen. They also like to watch this thing called YouTube when they need to learn something (they recently used the YouTube to put together a treadmill for the female human). It stands to reason that felines can learn knew tricks with the YouTube thing as well. Case in point, watch this kitty master the art of dough kneading via video.

black and white tuxedo cat learns how to flush toiletKitty With Mad Bathroom Skills – UPI

So this clever cat figured out how to help around the house, namely he knows how to flush the toilet. Now one would thing his humans would be thankful and acknowledge this feline for his helpful ways but nooooo-the humans complain about the costly water bill! Sometimes I wonder what it takes to make our humans happy!

Alberto Reports From BlogPaws -The Litter-Ary Cat, Part 1-Deborah Barnes

Al_PressBoxWithRetroMikeHello Folks,
Alberto here, your intrepid (albeit tardy) on the scene BlogPaws reporter. So the female human attended a conference for professional pet bloggers and writers and not only did she have a great time, she managed to connect with some of the best cat writers there. And these wonderful humans graciously donated signed books for her to use at her table at our local Panhandle Animal Shelter fundraiser in August.

I’m going to feature each one of these talented (and generous authors) and their books. Today’s featured author is Deborah Barnes.

Deborah Barnes is an award winning author and all around great cat lady. Her book Devborah Barnes book Makin Buscuits“Makin ‘ Biscuits” was a multi award winner this year, receiving a Muse Award, The Good News for Pets Human Animal Bond Award and the CWA (Cat Writer’s President’s Award.  This book is a delightful look at “Weird Cat Habits and Even Weirder Habits of The Humans Who Love Them”. It’s a compilation that personal anecdotes from Deborah and cat lovers around the world. If you want a “me too” moment or want to know a little more about felines and the crazy people who love them, you will love this book.

As if this award-winning signed book wasn’t enough of a generous donation, Deborah donated two other signed copies of her books, , Purr Prints of the Heart and The Chronicles of Zee and Zoey.

PurrPrintsOfTheHeartPurr Prints of the Heart is a memoir written from the viewpoint of a feline named Mr. Jazz. Mr. Jazz reflects on his life from kitten to old age and offers comfort to all who have dealt with the loss of a beloved pet.

The third generous donation from Deborah Barnes is her book, The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey, A Journey of the Extraordinarily Ordinary. This book tells a beautiful tale of the chronicles of Zee and Zoey book by Deborah Barneshow two cats bond together and how they fulfill and enrich the life of their human. Through her willingness to be transparent and to share how some of her biggest hurdles in life were made easier through the love and relationship she enjoyed with these two marvelous felines.

Not only is Deborah Barnes an excellent author, she’s a very nice human and the female human enjoyed getting to know her at BlogPaws.

I urge you to hightail it to your favorite book seller and buy these books and, if you are lucky enough to live in Sandpoint, Idaho, you can attend the Hodgepodge at the Lodge fund raiser for the Panhandle Animal Shelter and bid on the table the female human is putting together which will not only have amazing books (I’ll be highlighting all the authors who graciously donated signed books in the next few blog posts) but will feature many other fun things for the feline library theme.

Your BlogPaws on the scene reporter Alberto, signing off for now.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 6/27

546cd8fc-571d-40dc-9c00-c8eb9b6fbc2a-180-00000000e573caec

Hello All,
Alberto here bringing you my favorite feline finds on the web this week.

Feline Legal Purrdiciment – The Best Cat Page

black and white cat in Italian legal battleIf you are a less than faithful feline, you may find that you land your humans in a bit of a legal pickle. This cat in Italy had just such an experience and now the humans are prepared to duke it out in court.  So you fickle felines, decide who your humans are and stay there!

Quantify Your Cat’s Coming’s and Goings – Techcrunch

orange tabby cat coming in a cat doorIf you are a feline that  is a bit of a wanderer, this might just be the product your humans are looking for It’s a pet door that will report on feline comings and goings. The app sends the humans  push notifications whenever their furry feline friend enters and leaves the house.

There are other features as well but you may not want the humans to know about all of them. There is the ability to remotely lock or unlock the pet door, set curfews and track our habits and nocturnal routines (I mean a cat’s gotta’ have a little privacy). I’ll let  you decide how much you want to tell your humans.

Stray Kitten Wanders Onto TV Set and Introduces Herself – Little Things

gray and white kitten walks onto TV setI am an admirer of felines who seize an opportunity when it presents itself. Now if the humans are not so fast on the draw as far as finding furrever homes for homeless felines, I think this kitten has a brilliant idea. Just march your cute self into the studio in the middle of the broadcast. I hope the newscaster gave the kitten a furever home!

Special Pouches Help Feral Kittens Get Used To Humans – The Dodo

tiny kittens carried around in a kitten bjornBeing a rescue cat myself (as are all the Tribe of Five), I’m all for anything that helps cats become socialized in shelters because that helps them find furever homes. This pouch is a pretty nifty idea.  I know my brother Oliver and I who had to be bottle-fed when our mom was killed right after we were born, would have loved to snuggle in this pouch against a human.  The humans have something for their little humans called a Babybjorn. Well this is the kitten version and it works the same way. Some humans are pretty smart!

Soggy Moggy Tests New Hydrotherapy Treatments – Barcroft Media

orange tabby in pet life jacket swimming in poolI must explain for my feline friends that “moggy” is a term for cats that they use across the pond. Hydrotherapy has, until now, only been available for dogs and what it does is help muscles to exercise while nerve regeneration is taking place from injuries. It’s also a great fitness routine. And I say, why should the dogs have all the good stuff and evidently so does this human who is looking to help cats have hydrotherapy as well.  It’s not true that all cats hate water. There are lots of cats who like to be in water or around water. just sashay on over to Adventure Cats and see the cats there that like to swim or boat.

And, while we’re on the subject of cats and water, I must tell you about my summer project. The female human is working with me so that I can be her kayaking buddy. It’s going slowly but well.  I’ll keep you posted.

That’s it for this Wednesday, your pal Al,

BasilBasil the Bionic Cats Summer Pawty

I must say, those British moggies know how to pawty! Cat shaped treats, steak on the grlll ,kung fu kitties, birds and more. Basil, you`re the man!

ColleAll Things Collie – They bring Me Joy

I loved the way the collies human shares her heart about her love for her fur kids. Our humans always tell us how much The Tribe Five means to them. I wish every animal had humans that loved them that much!

ashmaTales of Asthma and Allergies With Gracie – Brian’s Home

There are lots of kitties with allergies and asthma. Our very own Miss P. (who crossed the Rainbow Bridge four years ago after living a rich and happy 18 years) had asthma all her life.

Miss P.

The humans knew how to keep her healthy and her asthma attacks to a minmum so if you’re an asmathic kitty, dont worry, you can live a long, healthy, happy life.

Oliver Opines – Out Loud

Hello All,
Oliver here. The #TribeOfFive will be opining out loud,  periodically. Here is my first “talkie”.  It resulted from the male human’s incredulity when he heard about our plan. Signing off for now and looking forward to opining out loud once in a while.
Purrs & Head Bonks,
Oliver

Walk Through the Web Wednesday 5/31

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Folks,
Alberto here. You may have noticed I’ve been on a bit of a hiatus with my Wednesday postings. I had quite a bit of work to do as the official #FelineOpines #BlopPaws cat on the ground reporter. I will be posting a wrap up soon, I must say, I’m very glad the human decided to attend, it was wonderful!

But enough about me, here are my feline faves of my weekly wanderings on the information highway.

Cat-Filled Tokyo Office Creates the Purrfect Working Environment – RocketNews.24.com

black and white cat perched on top of a computer monitorThe male human in our house is a tech professional and we often hear abut innovative stuff techies do.  This is the first time I’ve heard of tech office news that is feline related. Ferray Corporation in Tokyo has 9 resident working felines at their office. Now lest my canine friends cry “foul”, no worries, Ferray Corp hosts bring your pet to work days and other species are invited.  And even better, the company pays out a monthly  bonus of 5,000 Yen ($42.00) to anyone who adopts a cat in need of a home.

Ferray is not the only company promoting pet ownership.  A pet supply company in Tokyo encourages employees to bring their pets to work. Other companies offer benefits such as treating the death of employee’s pets as the death of a family member and provides them with time off, condolence pay and covers the cost of the funeral service.

It Takes A Village (Or A Neighborhood) To Help A Woman Keep Her Cat – Little Things

Black and white cat Romeo roams in the neighbors housesLisa Marie McKenzie received Romeo the cat as a Mother’s Day gift and she was thrilled, until she learned that pets weren’t allowed in her apartment. Rather than allowing her to give up the cat she loved, her neighbors stepped in with an unusual solution.

They created an open door policy for Romeo, allowing him to come and go as he pleased so Lisa Marie could keep the feline she loved so much.

The neighbors filmed Romeo in some of the crazy places he likes to hang out and some even keep lists of the places he hides so Lisa Marie can locate him.

What wonderful humans these folks are. I wonder if our neighbors would be willing to have an open door policy for The Tribe of Five?

Cat Wanders Into A Gym And Gets Himself a Customer Service Job – LoveMeow.com

gray tabby works at gymThose of you who follow my weekly Wednesday web wanderings know I’m a sucker for stores about cats with jobs and when the felines in question take matters into their own paws and get the jobs themselves, well, I must tell their stories.

Meet LB, the feline who wandered into a gym and found a job and a forever home. Gym members say he enhances the atmosphere, helps them stay on track with their workouts and make the gym a place they want to come to.

LB varies his work routine, sometimes requiring pets and cuddles from members and sometimes, sitting to the side snoopervising their workouts.

The Museum of The American House Cat – Citizen Times

the house cat mjuseum in south carolinaWhile some people may be saying, “Are you kidding?” I say, IT’S ABOUT TIME!!  The museum was created by Harold Sims, a retired college professor and cat shelter owner. Now I was surprised to learn that this is not the only cat museum in the world, there is one in Ohio that displays only Japanese toy cats, so this one is, strictly speaking the only one that honors house cats.

And this is not some fly-by-night attraction. The museum is created so that folks can learn the history of house cats, it’s a real educational experience.  Sims, also known as the “Cat Man” filled the museum with hundreds of relics, knick-knacks and pieces of art related to felines,  There are photographs of famous figures with their house cats, antique cat toys and even a mummified cat discovered in a 16th century house in the chimney.  (Not sure I want to see this one)

The museum is open 6 days weekly and costs $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. You can take a virtual tour through the museum.

The Felines Opine About Cat Sitters

tukcrownTucker here. So, the humans went away for a few days to something they called a “wedding”. I have no idea what that is but since I measure all the human activities in light of how it affects me, I was concerned about how the absence of our  servants….errr, beloved humans would affect me.  The humans have always looked out for us when they are not home but still, a cat needs to keep on top of what’s going on.

During the human’s 4-day departure, the rest of The Tribe of Five and I had time to reflect on the subject of cat sitters (why humans call them sitters I will never know, most of them come in, feed us and then leave right away. We rarely see them doing any sitting).  We felt we would do our humans and any future cat sitters a great service by compiling some of our thoughts on this cat sitting business.

Tucker Opines – Dear Cat Sitter,

1212010 003As far as I am concerned, wet food must be provided twice a day according to our daily routine. I have to admit that impatient cat sitters who do not remove bowls with uneaten food are my favorite people.  I can wander over to all the bowls and finish each dinner before the other felines  have an opportunity to eat. When there is no one to say, “Tucker, NO!” I enjoy quite a repast.

Also something very important to note,  evening treats are NOT an “option”. These treats are part of our routine and something we all look forward to (especially me).

Tucker

Jasmine Opines -Dear Cat Sitter,

img_0174Since I’m sequestered in another part of the house due to bullying issues  I live a very quiet existence. For the most part I’m self sufficient but I miss my human’s company at night so I greatly appreciate it if you spend a little time with me after the evening feeding. I like to talk to my humans and tell them about all the things I saw outside the big windows in my space. The female human always carries on quite an interesting conversation with me and even though it sounds like so much cat language gibberish, I like it. If you choose to converse with me, I will not judge you on your feline vocabulary, I’ll just enjoy the fact that you are attempting to converse.  When the humans ask you to turn on the automatic red dot machine, please do this. It provides me with good exercise and brightens my day. (I’d turn it on myself but the lack of opposable thumbs makes this impossible). It’s also a bit of fun for Alberto and Oliver who sit in the hallway and swat at the dot when it sneaks under the door. My final point,  I agree with Tucker, evening treats are definitely NOT optional!
Jasmine

Lily Opines – Dear Cat Sitter,

cat in windowI am the most skittish one in the Tribe so I don’t bond easily with strange humans. If you spend a little time talking to me, I greatly appreciate it and may even rub against your legs or give you a head bonk as a thank you. Also, please put my wet food dish in a high, safe spot so I can eat in peace without Tucker attempting to move me away from my meal. I don’t usually eat immediately  so if  you stand guard for a few minutes I greatly appreciate it. I have no firm stance on the subject of evening  treats but I sure do enjoy eating the cat grass in the kitchen window and appreciate it greatly when the cat sitter waters it. Finally, if you do not see me you may want to check under the coverlet in the guest bedroom or under any of the throws in the house. If you spy a lump, it’s probably me which also brings to mind a caution, please check for lumps before you sit down.
Lily

 Alberto Opines -Dear Cat Sitter,
Siamese Cat Sitting on suitcaseBecause our mother was killed after we were born, my siblings and I were bottle fed and are very bonded to humans.  As a matter of fact, we find humans interesting and fun. I never miss the opportunity to make a new human friend so if you would sit on the sofa for a bit I’d love to sit next to you and get some petting.  Since my brother Oliver and I are still young, we love to play. Be careful that you don’t trip on the cat toys I’ve taken out of our toy bin and, if you walk downstairs, I love to run down ahead and stop abruptly in front of you, be cautious and alert.  There is  a tantalizing jar of Meowijuana in the pantry that is always a hit with us.  The humans will tell you that Tucker is a “mean drunk” but don’t let that deter you from offering us catnip.  As long as you sprinkle the stuff on all the scratching posts we can enjoy it without fighting. (Oh, and don’t forget Jasmine, she loves catnip too!)

Alberto

Oliver Opines -Dear Cat Sitter,

img_2222-1

The other four members of The Tribe of Five have covered most of the major points but there is one important thing I’d like to mention. Just because you see kibble in my bowl,  does NOT mean it is fully filled. Part of my favorite morning routine is doing my “food dance” into the laundry room as you get out the bag of cat food. I will then dance an enthusiastic cha-cha down the hallway to the food bowls. I also appreciate a little petting time, because, as Alberto said, we are people lovers. If you stretch out your legs, I will be happy to plant myself on top of them (be sure you have everything you need close by if this happens such as TV remote, your phone, etc. ) as I do not take kindly to being rousted. Things will go much better for you if my departure from your legs or lap is my decision. Oh, and there is always a sticky, fur removing device in the kitchen. I do suggest you do not wear black and corduroy is a big fashion mistake in our house.

Oliver

Walk Through the Web Wednesday 5/10

Hello Friends, Furry, Feathered and Otherwise,
Alberto here. I’ve missed a couple of my Wednesday postings because my purrrsonal assistant (the female human) has been traveling and evidently my blogging needs were put on the back burner for a family wedding…priorities people!  But she is back and typing for me so here are my favorite finds from purrrrusing the world-wide web.

Feline Focused Happy Hour in Portland – The Portland Mercury

tabby cat in a cocktail glass feline happy hourWhere we live here in the Inland Northwest, many wineries, breweries, restaurants, etc.  host “Yappy Hours” for the dogs and dog people in our community to benefit our local shelter. I have always wondered why there were no cat loving drinkers out there who would take on a bit of imbibing on behalf of felines and feline lovers. Well. leave it to Portland to be the first. This happy hour is called “I love Cats. And Drinking” and is advertised as a place where people can talk about cats without feeling judged. They will feature cat themed games, trivia, entertainment such as “Meowoke”, cat themed comedy and lots more.  Evidently there has been a long running battle between Seattle and Portland as to which city is the most cat friendly. Well Portland, you’ve got my vote. Two Paws Up for a happy hour for feline lovers. (If we lived closer I would insist that my humans attend!)

Shy Cat gets job as receptionist after more than 400 days at shelter –Evening Standard

white shelter cat working at the shelter front deskAs you may know, every member of The Tribe of Five is a rescue and we have a soft spot in our hearts for happy shelter kitty stories. This one is wonderful. Champas, a white cat spent 400 days at the Animal Welfare League in NSW, Australia.  He was so shy and fearful, he would run and hide whenever anyone came to visit him. Thank goodness the staff there are proactive and they appointed Champas as their first reception cat in an attempt to show potential adopters how good-natured and loveable he is.  They posted photos of Champas on Facebook, while he was hard at work, complete with descriptive signs that further explained his purrrrsonality.  The job not only got him out of his shell but the Facebook posts snagged him a forever home!

Shelter Cats Visit Seniors Who Can’t Have Pets – I Heart Cats

elderly woman holding a black cat

Here’s another great story about shelter cats. There are many older people who have to move to places where pets are not allowed. Everyone who is an animal lover knows that without the company of furry four-legged friends, life just isn’t the same.  The Bangor Humane Society, in Maine regularly packs up some of their felines and takes them to local nursing homes to visit people who can no longer care for pets. It’s a win-win. The folks in the home get some feline love in their lives (purrs and head bonks) and the kitties get much-needed socialization. Well done Bangor Humane Society!

Every Office Needs A Kitty Kondo: Check Out A Cat At The Cat Library – Cattime.com

kitten from a cat library sits on phoneHere’s another wonderful shelter story. I love it when shelters are creative in working to adopt out the kitties in their care.  I have reported on cat cafes, cat hotels, cat yoga but now there are cat libraries!  The Animal Care Center of Mesilla Valley in New Mexico has come up with a purrrrrfect idea to promote feline adoptions.  They have created a cat library located inside a government building where over 800 employees have the opportunity to “check out ” a cat or kitten and take them to their desk for up to an hour a day.  The cats are socialized and the “borrow before you adopt” idea seems to be working as other businesses are thinking about establishing cat libraries in their facilities.
