The First Ever NY Cat Film Festival – Metro

NYCAtFilmFestival

Finally New York is getting wise to the idea that cats rule! They’ve had a Dog Film Festival for the last three years and this has really gotten my whiskers in a twist. Well thank goodness, someone got a clue and the FIRST Cat Film Festival will be held in New York at the Chelsea SVA Theater in December!  And all I can say is, “It’s about time!” If you want to learn more you can watch a promo for the event here.

Domestic Violence and Pets – The PAWS Act

My human attends a conference for pet writers and bloggers called BlogPaws and at this conference, she learned about pets of domestic abuse survivors. Did  you know that often, people in abusive situations have to choose between their safety and their pet? Did you know that in most shelters, domestic abuse survivors cannot take their pets because there is no place for the animals? How sad to force someone to part with the one thing that offers them unconditional love!

The Pet and Women Safety Act (PAWS Act, for short) is attempting to amend the federal criminal code to broaden the definition of stalking to include the reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury to a person’s pet. Additionally, it would expand interstate violations of a protection order to also cover pets. Lastly, it directs the Department of Agriculture to award grants for shelter, housing assistance, and support services for survivors of domestic violence with pets. This is a law The Tribe of Five can wholeheartedly support and we hope you will sign the petition and support it too. And how about checking with your local shelter and finding out if they have resources for the pets of domestic violence survivors?

Purr Minister 2017 – Metro.co.uk

black cat named midnight new purr minister

The only kind of purrlitical stuff I’m interested in is the feline variety. For instance, I was Oliver’s campaign manager when he ran for Purresident with the Kitty Kat Party last year.  Evidently, there are purrlitical felines in the  UK as well and they were vying for the title of  Purr Minister.

The 2017 Purr Minister campaign ended last week. There were six moggies who competed for the Purr Minister crown and each wrote a Manifursto explaining why they deserved to be voted the most fabulous feline in Westminster.  The winner was selected by the public and it was a hotly contested race.

This year’s winner, garnered 49 percent of the public vote. Two paws up for the new Purr Minister, Midnight!

In this village in Mandya, cats are worshipped as gods – Times of India

FelineTemple

Well my feline friends, if you feel as though you’re not getting enough respect in your household you may want to consider a move to Bekkalale village, India, where cats are literally put on a pedestal. Bekkalale, worships the cat as a form of goddess Mangamma and has no less than three temples dedicated to felines.  Humans are harshly punished for harming cats in this village and every year there is a festival to honor the majestic feline. (Which of course, is our due!)

Seattle’s Newest Cat Cafe Offers Beer, Japanese Snacks and a Whole Lot of Adorable-Seattle Magazine

Neko crop

Image Credit: Caitlin Unsell Follow the sign to Capitol Hill’s new kitty den.

Those cool cats in Seattle always seem to be on the cutting edge of hipness. Case in point, the Neko Cat Cafe that serves beer and snacks! The owner and founder of this cat cafe, Caitlin Unsell, was inspired by the cat cafes in Japan.  Neko is the third cat cafe in the Seattle area but the felines you meet at the Neko cafe are extra special.

Unsell partnered with Regional Animal Services of King County to help the cafe kitties find furever homes. All of the cats Neko (which means “cat” in Japanese) are diagnosed with the feline leukemia virus which is a disease that poses long term health issues but does not keep the cats from living long, happy lives.  People often pass over cats with health issues in shelters and Unsell hopes to change this by giving the cat loving community a chance to meet and know the felines at her cafe.

The cafe has two areas, one for the cafe and the other for the cats. The  happy felines have a long bank of windows at pavement level for great canine and human viewing.
I am overwhelmed when I realize how many great humans there are out there who are not just dedicating themselves to finding furever homes for felines but finding homes for felines that are usually passed over for adoption. Two paws up for the Neko Cat Cafe.

Feral Cats From California Get Work, New Lives In Colorado-The Denver Post

black feral cat from California gets new home in Colorado

The feral cat population in California is exploding (estimates are 3 million). The weather is warm and food is fairly plentiful but feral cats don’t have great lives and don’t live very long either. Many California feral cats are euthanized but these kitties, if spayed/neutered can thrive if they’re given jobs as rodent control. And there are some dedicated folks in Colorado and at the Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats, a feral cat rescue are doing. So far they’ve made three trips from California to Colorado in the “Meowgic School Bus” giving felines a ride to their new work locations in barns, homes and businesses in Salida, Golden and Fort Collins Colorado.  What a wonderful way to give feral kitties a home and a purrrrrpose in life!

Cats at Weddings – Pinterest

bride and groom with black and white cat with blue bow tie
I have previously reported on weddings that included beloved felines or cat-themed weddings. Little did I know you could search “cats at weddings” and find such a treasure trove of photos. So humans, fear not. You can find all kinds of ideas to include your beloved kitty in your future wedding preparations.

The Real Felines of New York – I Can Haz Cheeseburger?

black New York cat

I will never understand why you humans are so interested in “housewives” from so many cities. I guess Jim Tews felt the same way so he started a page that features kitties from around the city.  Not only are the photos great but you can really get a glimpse into the life of the kitties in the Big Apple, for instance, there’s Scout from Astoria who has suffered under the city’s regulations, “I went to culinary school. I tried to open my own pastry shop, but I quickly found out I was up against a bureaucracy that was beyond my comprehension, and pretty intolerant. I had everything in place, but the health inspector shut us down as soon as he realized my staff was all cats.”

Rescued Feral Kitten Named D.O.G. Helps Train Support Dogs – Little Things

Black and white kitten trains therapy dogs

This story combines two things I love, cat adoption and working cats. Support Dogs Inc, in St. Louis recently added a feline member to the team. He’s a former feral kitten named D.O. G (pronounced “dee-OH-gee”) who has become one of the best training tools they have.  He trains the dogs to sit still, not to get up or react to him (and not to bark). D.O.G. is purrfectly fit for the job because he’s fearless and he stands up to all the dogs no matter their size. Way to go D.O.G and thanks to Support Dogs Inc for giving this feline a home and a job!

True Heroes,  Men Who Save Cats From Trees – BBC News

There are some mighty tall trees in Washington state, but Washington felines, take heart because you have Sean Sears and Tom Otto from Canopy Cat Rescue.  I say two paws up for these great humans! (You can see them in action by clicking on the link to the video below).

Modern, Architect-Designed Outdoor Cat Dwellings for Charity – Design Milk

gray tabby kitten in fancy cat condo
Architects  pulled out all the creative stops when they designed, built and donated unique and functional outdoor dwellings for cats.  Even celebrities got into the act and they decorated and auctioned off food bowls to benefit local shelters.  Thirteen cat-tastic dwellings were created this year. Which one is your favorite?

Miniature Furniture Designed Especially for Cats – Maxim

Once you have that condo purchased and set up, you’re going to need to furnish it and there’s a Japanese furniture manufacturer, Okawa City who can handle the task.  Purrrsonally, I’m a fan of the kitty sized bed and the matching nightstand and lamp. Check them out and watch the video  of felines enjoying their new furnishings.

Paddles, The “First Cat” of New Zealand – HuffPost

paddles the yellow and white first cat of New Zealand

I attempt to stay away from purrrlitical things here but my love of working cats forces me to report on purrrlitical felines. Paddles will be New Zealand’s “First Cat” when his human, labor party leader Jacinda Ardern becomes Prime Minister.  And that’s not the only thing unusual about Paddles, she has opposable thumbs so I’m thinking she will be typing her own purrrlitical announcements on her Twitter account @FirstCatofNZ

The Camping With Cats Instagram Page is Purrrfect – Cheezeburger

gray tabby camping in winterIf you follow me Wednesday meanderings you know I love to feature adventure cats and this week I hit the jackpot! There is an Instagram page with camping cats (a few that I’ve featured in past Walk Through The Web Wednesday posts).  I am inspired and am looking forward to having my human providing me with a little adventure in the snow this winter!

German Man Planning to Open Sweden’s First Cat Cafe – The Local

yellow and white tabby at Stockholms first cat cafe

Dirk Lüders visited cat cafes all over the world and decided that Sweden needed one too. The Cat Corner will be open soon and will be more focused on the “cat” than the “café” part and he hopes to raise awareness about the problem of homeless animals in Sweden.

So he started work on The Cat Corner and hopes to open the country’s very first cat café in the coming months. According to figures from the cat charity Svekatt, there are 150,000 homeless cats in Sweden and 30,000 in the Stockholm area alone, and those numbers are growing. The café will allow people who can’t have cats to enjoy feline time and will work with local shelters to get cats adopted.

Methinks it’s time for my humans to plan an international cat café trip..but wait, that would mean they’d have to a cat sitter for The Tribe of Five so maybe they’ll have to go one at a time. In the meantime, the humans will just have to follow this cat cafe on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.

It’s Linky Party Time! 10/6

Five cats in hats celebrating Linky Party
Hi There,
Oliver here. It’s pawty time again and I’m hosting this one. When #TheTribeOfFive was deciding which blog post of ours to feature, I stretched out and contemplated for quite a img_0097-1while. I finally decided that we wanted to highlight our “Let’s Talk About Adoption” post, even though it was for Remember Me Thursday on Sept. 28. Pet adoption is a big deal in our house (all five of us are rescues) and besides, you get to see the awesome kitten pictures of each of us (and a tribute to  Miss P. and Buster who crossed over the Rainbow Bridge).

But enough about us, here are my three picks from the last party, enjoy and please join us in the Linky Party Festivities, all species of pets are welcome!
Purrs & Head Bonks,
Oliver

Arrrrr – Erin the Princess Cat
black and white cat on pirate ship

I always love to read about the goings on in Erin’s regal residence and this story had me enthralled. Seems Erin found herself on the high seas with quite a cast of characters. This is what happens when you take International Talk Like a Pirate Day too seriously!

A Beautiful Tribute To Zoe – 15andmeowing

zoe

We love the felines at this wonderful blog. They took the time to send love and condolences to our friends at Animal Shelter Volunteer Life on the loss of their beloved fur kid Zoe. The Tribe of Five sends our love and prayers as well. Say hello to Miss P. and Buster Zoe!

Sister Saturday with Dolly – Brian’s Home

long haired gray and white tabby cat
I love to read the updates from the female felines at this blog. Dolly is one pretty kitty and the two sisters here at the Tribe of Five are thinking a “Sister Saturday” would be a good idea on our blog as the brothers seem to take over the blog writing!

Felines Opine On Design

gray cat in ad for tuft and paws

Hello Friends, Furry, Feathered and Otherwise,
Tucker here, the #TribeofFive Alpha. Our purrrsonal assistant received an intriguing email from the good folks at Tuft + Paw regarding a cat bed design contest.

Now if you humans are really paying attention to your felines as they relax and recline, this contest should be a no-brainer for you. Just watch how your kitties like to sleep, figure out what kind of sustainable materials you can use, submit your design and voila you may be a winner!

I enjoy availing myself of the human furniture with a little cat comfort added, a soft blanket or pillow is nice, which is why I think Tuft + Paws Island pillow would suit me very well. orange tabby on Island Cat Bed from Tuft + Paw

img_2737

Oliver is a heat seeking missile, he never seems to get close enough to the fireplace, so if the humans design a bed for him, it definitely would need to be created from sustainable fire-proof material.

img_0103

Al is a lean mean feline machine, and likes to stretch out as far as he can when he sleeps (pushing anything out of his way, including human arms and legs). A design for Al would need to be very loooong.

img_0102

Jasmine is more of a traditionalist, preferring to burrow under pillows or just perch on top of them like the princess she is.

img_1151

And then there’s Lily, well, let’s just say Lily is a non-conformist sleeper.

As you can see, there are lots of ideas for kitties who seem to have varied and assorted sleeping preferences.

Tuft + Paw is a great company
, inspired by their love of cats and their concern for their comfort and safety. They share their homes with felines, so they know what makes us happy and they also pay attention to style so that humans don’t mind displaying this fancy and decorative furniture in their homes.   And my favorite thing about this company? They  are great advocates of no kill shelters and have a heart for feral felines. In order to support shelter cats and cat adoptions, they offer a 50% discount for those who take part in their “Donate A Bed” program for their local shelters.
brown cat in fur Capello bed from Tuft + PawWe have a wonderful no-kill shelter in our community (Panhandle Animal Shelter) and methinks a few of those pawsome, furry, cozy Capello beds would be quite welcome there, especially in winter!

So humans, I encourage you to have a confab with your cats and come up with the winning design for this contest! But may I add a word of caution. As much as we felines appreciate all the cool toys and beds and scratching posts you spend your hard earned money on, sometimes, we just need a little quiet time in a cardboard box. img_0101

Siamese cat in life vestHello Folks,
Alberto here. As my regular readers know,  Wednesdays are normally my “Walk Through the Web Wednesday” posts where I purrruse the web and bring you the newest and finest feline articles.  This week is a bit different. In light of the suffering of humans and their furry, feathered and otherwise friends due to Hurricane Harvey. I put on my new life jacket in solidarity with all my friends and I sure wish each one of them had a life vest like mine. My humans are giving to several great human relief organizations as well as hurricane aid for pets. Please do what  you can for the folks affected by this terrible disaster and please keep them all in your prayers.

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Friends, Furry, Feathered and Otherwise,

Alberto here. As you may have surmised by the heading that my purrrrsonal assistant has once again proven to be less than adept at meeting deadlines. Still, I have to say, she has had a lot going on so I will cut her some slack. I have asked however, that this not happen again (I am still waiting for her response).

Without further ado, I give you the feline themed gems I discovered during my wanderings through the web.

Some of you may remember my earlier report on the fearless feline who ran into the outfield on August 9th at the bottom of the 6th inning at Bush Stadium.  One of the ground crew captured the courageous cat and the feline has weaseled his way into the hearts of Cardinal Fans. Evidently, the plan was for Rally Cat to remain with the Cardinals group, in a cushy set up and they were even planning a Rally Cat promotion.

But human lawyers have stepped in and now there is a legal battle between the Cardinal’s organization and the St. Louis Feral Cat Outreach. Evidently these outreach folks feel it’s better to keep Rally Cat in a shelter than letting him have a good home. Take it from me, my brother Oliver came from a nice no-kill shelter but we’d much rather have the furever home we have now!

I’ve reported on some crazy cat-themed products, Apollo Peak Winery’s Feline Wines like Pinot Meow and  Catbernet. I’ve written about Meowijuana’s cigar shaped catnip treats and other great stuff but this product is really off the charts!

Demeter has created a kitten fur-scented perfume! They say that when you sniff this concoction it captures the “olfactory essence of the warmth and comfort of that purrfect spot, just behind a kitten’s neck.  This isn’t the company’s first foray into unusual scents, the first three fragrances they produced were Dirt, Grass and Tomato and they’ve since created other popular scents such as Laundromat, Gin & Tonic and Paperback.

CatCon 2017  – Pet Product News

What is this strange event you might ask? Well it’s one of the premiere Feline events in the country. This year’s event (the third annual) attracted 15,000 cat lovers for a weekend of all things feline.  It was held at the Pasadena Convention Center in Los Angeles in August and featured new feline products, feline fashion and human feline themed fashion. Some of the world’s most famous felines were in attendance and the best news of the weekend….more than 150 cats and kittens were adopted during the event!

two long haired tabbys and a white cat learn sign languageDeaf Woman Teaches Sign Language to Her Three Cats -Elite Daily

We felines have the capacity to learn so much and this story just illustrates how amazing we are (and the humans who are patient enough to teach us!)

Two paws up for this lady who is a former teacher of the American School for the Deaf. She came up with this idea after she adopted a deaf cat named Bambi.  She said that since her daughters learned signs from their infancy, she thought she’s try and teach her cats.

Silva, who is deaf herself, then taught signs to her two other cats, whose behaviors would be mimicked by Bambi soon after she arrived. So far her fantastic felines understand the signs for “come”, “more”, “stay”, “circle”, “play” “shrimp and some others.  It has also helped make her shy kitty more outgoing and playful.  Watch these clever kitties on the video.

Crazy-Cat-Themed-Wedding-on-the-Isle-of-Man-31-640x427 Crazy Cat Themed Wedding on the Isle of Man – Rock N Roll Bride

If my humans ever decide to renew their vows, this is the theme they should pick!  I find the choice of the Isle of Man for the venue very clever as I am sure all my readers are well versed in cat facts and know that the Isle of Man is the home of the Manx cat.

The beautiful bride and her bridesmaids wore cat shoes, earrings a cat fur scarf and a headband with little enamel cats peeking out.  There was a cat cake, cat decor, cat favors…well you get the picture! What a lovely wedding and a lovely couple. I wish them a long and prospurrrrous married life!

This is a shout out to Bean Town! These enlightened folks recently held their first public Caturday event. What I didn’t know is this event is happening in towns all across the country (I wonder why my town hasn’t held one??)

Boston’s first Caturday celebration was quite a success. What a Caturday event is a a feline friendly meet up. They advertised it on Facebook as “a day to reclaim the glory of the outdoors for our feline friends.” It was such a success that the organizer is planning to hold future Caturdays on the Boston Common on the first Caturday (Saturday for you humans) of each month.  Folks showed up with cats on leashes, cats in strollers and cats in their arms. The dog people did a double take but there were no hissy fits.

Hello Friends, Furry, Feathered and Otherwise,
It’s Alberto with my Wednesday feline news. I have my purrsonal assistant purrr-use the web to bring you what I feel are the most interesting stories of the week. Without further ado, here they are, enjoy!

Matilda the retired Algonquin Cat

Matilda, the former Algonquin Cat

The Algonquin Hotel, NY Hires A Fabulous New Feline – New York Post

Those of you who wander with me on Wednesdays know how much I like to feature working cats. This story is purrrticularily interesting to me. Matilda, the Algonquin Cat has retired after seven  years with the hotel. Matilda first came to the notice of The Tribe of Five as she resembles our very own Alpha, Tucker.  Take a look and let what you think.  But.  I digress.

Siamese cat with cross eyes on chair
Tucker, Alpha of The Tribe of Five

About a month ago, an orange tabby, about a year old, was sighted in a feral colony, scrounging for food. He was immediately selected as Matilda’s replacement and now plays with toy mice, receives love from his human “staff” and visitors and has been officially hired as the newest Algonquin cat.

He has been dubbed Hamlet and his is the epitome of the rags to riches tale. Hamlet is the 12th Algonquin cat and its first male mascot in  Orange and white tabby at the Algonquin hotelmore than 40 years.

Hamlet, the handsome marmalade tabby will make his official debut tomorrow (August 3) at the hotel’s annual Cat Fashion Show which is a fund raiser for the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals. My only questions is, “Hey Algonquin, where is my invitation??!!”

Ricky, the Distillery Cat – 89.3 WFPL (Ashlie Stevens)

Orange and white tabby in blue striped tieI’ve reported on cats who work in breweries, hardware stores, for police and fire fighters and even Russian cats who work in a museum but this is my first report of a cat working in a distillery.  Ricky often greets visitors in a baby blue tie. Brett Connors, the distillery’s brand ambassador, adopted Ricky when he learned that the feline had FIV — feline immunodeficiency virus — which resulted in folks passing up adopting him as they were concerned about his medical costs.

Ricky’s initial job was to be security but he is so friendly and outgoing, he managed to write his own new, job description as head of hospitality.

Hiring cats for distillery work has a long tradition, as these businesses have a lot of grain on site and where there’s grain, there are mice.

Ricky is so successful in his hospitality role that the distillery is planning on hiring a few other felines, all with Ricky’s medical condition. Not only will they have more feline ambassadors but they’ll provide a home to cats that otherwise would not find a forever place to live. Bravo to Castle and Keys Distillery! I have requested the humans to try the product from this feline friendly company and they were quite happy to oblige!

Tabby cat in the Swiss ArmyCat Draws Pension Without Lifting a Paw – SwissInfo.ch by Susan Misicka

I have wondered about all the working cats I write about, what do they do when they retire? Is there a retirement for them? We know that Matilda the Algonquin cat has retired but nothing is said about what kind of retirement she received. In this story, we find out what retirement is like for a Swiss Army cat.

This feline began hanging around the military base in Lyss in 2004. She was a bored house cat and wanted to find excitement that only life in the military could provide.

The soldiers in the barracks provided her snacks between meals and dubbed her “Broccoli” after the tabby ate some of the green vegetable when a soldier offered it to her.

Despite the fact that Broccoli had a home, she preferred hanging out with the soldiers and was added to the official roster of army animals about three years ago. This roster includes search and rescue and guard dogs, 57 riding horses and 200 pack horses but until Broccoli, no felines.

The feline’s owner and the military came to an agreement that she could enlist. The soldiers contribute to a fund so that she can have healthy meals. She shares an office with Werner Holzer who says she’s a polite and curious office mate.  Since she is an official army animal she receives medical treatment from the army vet.

Now that Broccoli is 14, she is officially retired with the rank of Brigadier but lest you think sh’e is unique, she isn’t the only Swiss animal  getting a pension from public funds.
You can view a video of Broccoli on the original article or check out her own Facebook page

The Litter-Ary Cat introducing Mollie Hunt

photos of Mollie Hunt crazy cat mystery booksWhen we sent the feline human to #BlogPaws in May she had a mission, to obtain signed copies of books from her fellow members of the Cat Writer Association to decorate her table and donate to the auction for our local shelter, The Panhandle Animal Shelter’s annual fund raiser, Hodge Podge at The Lodge. Well those cat writers are generous people and we felt it important to highlight each author who generously donated to our cause.

A note of explanation about the event. Humans sponsor and decorate a table at the event and then invite their human friends to come and bid on auction items and even the tables. Our human is doing a “Litter-Ary Cat table, complete with signed copies of cat books (thanks to the generosity of the human’s fellow Cat Writer’s Association members, cat wines, catnip cigars, cat bookends and other cat-themed library stuff.  The human will post pictures after the August 29th event.

I was purrrrticularily excited to learn about Mollie Hunt’s books as she writes a series of cat mysteries and we love mysteries, especially when cats are involved! Mollie generously donated a copy of each of her books in the Crazy Cat Lady series , Cat’s Eyes, Copy Cats and Cat Paw.  Mollie’s books feature a heroine, Lynley Cannon who is a cat shelter volunteer and a woman who manages to get tangled in dicey situations. And, the thread that runs through this book series is, of course cats!

Mollie has written other wonderful cat-related books and pieces and she received the prestigious Muse Award in the Health and General Care Blog Category for her blog post, “Life Stages” at this year’s Cat Writer’s Association conference. You can wander on over to her blog and see what Mollie is up to.

The female human enjoyed meeting Mollie and she and The Tribe of Five are very grateful for her contribution to our fund raiser so that we can help shelter kitties in our community find furever homes.

Until my next Litter-Ary feline book review from the other generous authors, grab your copy of Mollie’s books and enjoy.

Until next time, your friend,

AlHead
