Alberto Reports From BlogPaws -The Litter-Ary Cat, Part 1-Deborah Barnes

Al_PressBoxWithRetroMikeHello Folks,
Alberto here, your intrepid (albeit tardy) on the scene BlogPaws reporter. So the female human attended a conference for professional pet bloggers and writers and not only did she have a great time, she managed to connect with some of the best cat writers there. And these wonderful humans graciously donated signed books for her to use at her table at our local Panhandle Animal Shelter fundraiser in August.

I’m going to feature each one of these talented (and generous authors) and their books. Today’s featured author is Deborah Barnes.

Deborah Barnes is an award winning author and all around great cat lady. Her book Devborah Barnes book Makin Buscuits“Makin ‘ Biscuits” was a multi award winner this year, receiving a Muse Award, The Good News for Pets Human Animal Bond Award and the CWA (Cat Writer’s President’s Award.  This book is a delightful look at “Weird Cat Habits and Even Weirder Habits of The Humans Who Love Them”. It’s a compilation that personal anecdotes from Deborah and cat lovers around the world. If you want a “me too” moment or want to know a little more about felines and the crazy people who love them, you will love this book.

As if this award-winning signed book wasn’t enough of a generous donation, Deborah donated two other signed copies of her books, , Purr Prints of the Heart and The Chronicles of Zee and Zoey.

PurrPrintsOfTheHeartPurr Prints of the Heart is a memoir written from the viewpoint of a feline named Mr. Jazz. Mr. Jazz reflects on his life from kitten to old age and offers comfort to all who have dealt with the loss of a beloved pet.

The third generous donation from Deborah Barnes is her book, The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey, A Journey of the Extraordinarily Ordinary. This book tells a beautiful tale of the chronicles of Zee and Zoey book by Deborah Barneshow two cats bond together and how they fulfill and enrich the life of their human. Through her willingness to be transparent and to share how some of her biggest hurdles in life were made easier through the love and relationship she enjoyed with these two marvelous felines.

Not only is Deborah Barnes an excellent author, she’s a very nice human and the female human enjoyed getting to know her at BlogPaws.

I urge you to hightail it to your favorite book seller and buy these books and, if you are lucky enough to live in Sandpoint, Idaho, you can attend the Hodgepodge at the Lodge fund raiser for the Panhandle Animal Shelter and bid on the table the female human is putting together which will not only have amazing books (I’ll be highlighting all the authors who graciously donated signed books in the next few blog posts) but will feature many other fun things for the feline library theme.

Your BlogPaws on the scene reporter Alberto, signing off for now.

Oliver Opines – Out Loud

Hello All,
Oliver here. The #TribeOfFive will be opining out loud,  periodically. Here is my first “talkie”.  It resulted from the male human’s incredulity when he heard about our plan. Signing off for now and looking forward to opining out loud once in a while.

Five cats in hats celebrating Linky Party

Hello Friends,
It’s party time again. We took a brief hiatus as some of the humans involved were in a place called Myrtle Beach for something called #BlopPaws. I was the “on the scene” reporter for Feline Opines and I will be doing some apres conference reporting as well. One thing I do know, the female human comes back from this conference with copious amounts of feline goodies!  So, without further ado, I bring  you my three faves from the last Linky Party!

The Felines Opine About Cat Sitters

tukcrownTucker here. So, the humans went away for a few days to something they called a “wedding”. I have no idea what that is but since I measure all the human activities in light of how it affects me, I was concerned about how the absence of our  servants….errr, beloved humans would affect me.  The humans have always looked out for us when they are not home but still, a cat needs to keep on top of what’s going on.

During the human’s 4-day departure, the rest of The Tribe of Five and I had time to reflect on the subject of cat sitters (why humans call them sitters I will never know, most of them come in, feed us and then leave right away. We rarely see them doing any sitting).  We felt we would do our humans and any future cat sitters a great service by compiling some of our thoughts on this cat sitting business.

Tucker Opines – Dear Cat Sitter,

1212010 003As far as I am concerned, wet food must be provided twice a day according to our daily routine. I have to admit that impatient cat sitters who do not remove bowls with uneaten food are my favorite people.  I can wander over to all the bowls and finish each dinner before the other felines  have an opportunity to eat. When there is no one to say, “Tucker, NO!” I enjoy quite a repast.

Also something very important to note,  evening treats are NOT an “option”. These treats are part of our routine and something we all look forward to (especially me).

Tucker

Jasmine Opines -Dear Cat Sitter,

img_0174Since I’m sequestered in another part of the house due to bullying issues  I live a very quiet existence. For the most part I’m self sufficient but I miss my human’s company at night so I greatly appreciate it if you spend a little time with me after the evening feeding. I like to talk to my humans and tell them about all the things I saw outside the big windows in my space. The female human always carries on quite an interesting conversation with me and even though it sounds like so much cat language gibberish, I like it. If you choose to converse with me, I will not judge you on your feline vocabulary, I’ll just enjoy the fact that you are attempting to converse.  When the humans ask you to turn on the automatic red dot machine, please do this. It provides me with good exercise and brightens my day. (I’d turn it on myself but the lack of opposable thumbs makes this impossible). It’s also a bit of fun for Alberto and Oliver who sit in the hallway and swat at the dot when it sneaks under the door. My final point,  I agree with Tucker, evening treats are definitely NOT optional!
Jasmine

Lily Opines – Dear Cat Sitter,

cat in windowI am the most skittish one in the Tribe so I don’t bond easily with strange humans. If you spend a little time talking to me, I greatly appreciate it and may even rub against your legs or give you a head bonk as a thank you. Also, please put my wet food dish in a high, safe spot so I can eat in peace without Tucker attempting to move me away from my meal. I don’t usually eat immediately  so if  you stand guard for a few minutes I greatly appreciate it. I have no firm stance on the subject of evening  treats but I sure do enjoy eating the cat grass in the kitchen window and appreciate it greatly when the cat sitter waters it. Finally, if you do not see me you may want to check under the coverlet in the guest bedroom or under any of the throws in the house. If you spy a lump, it’s probably me which also brings to mind a caution, please check for lumps before you sit down.
Lily

 Alberto Opines -Dear Cat Sitter,
Siamese Cat Sitting on suitcaseBecause our mother was killed after we were born, my siblings and I were bottle fed and are very bonded to humans.  As a matter of fact, we find humans interesting and fun. I never miss the opportunity to make a new human friend so if you would sit on the sofa for a bit I’d love to sit next to you and get some petting.  Since my brother Oliver and I are still young, we love to play. Be careful that you don’t trip on the cat toys I’ve taken out of our toy bin and, if you walk downstairs, I love to run down ahead and stop abruptly in front of you, be cautious and alert.  There is  a tantalizing jar of Meowijuana in the pantry that is always a hit with us.  The humans will tell you that Tucker is a “mean drunk” but don’t let that deter you from offering us catnip.  As long as you sprinkle the stuff on all the scratching posts we can enjoy it without fighting. (Oh, and don’t forget Jasmine, she loves catnip too!)

Alberto

Oliver Opines -Dear Cat Sitter,

img_2222-1

The other four members of The Tribe of Five have covered most of the major points but there is one important thing I’d like to mention. Just because you see kibble in my bowl,  does NOT mean it is fully filled. Part of my favorite morning routine is doing my “food dance” into the laundry room as you get out the bag of cat food. I will then dance an enthusiastic cha-cha down the hallway to the food bowls. I also appreciate a little petting time, because, as Alberto said, we are people lovers. If you stretch out your legs, I will be happy to plant myself on top of them (be sure you have everything you need close by if this happens such as TV remote, your phone, etc. ) as I do not take kindly to being rousted. Things will go much better for you if my departure from your legs or lap is my decision. Oh, and there is always a sticky, fur removing device in the kitchen. I do suggest you do not wear black and corduroy is a big fashion mistake in our house.

Oliver

The Three Feline Rules Regarding Furniture

Hello Friends,
Alberto here. The recent purchase of a sofa at our house brought up some misunderstandings between the felines and the humans in our home. It occurred to me that many of my feline readers may be experiencing some of these misunderstandings in their own homes so I decided to opine about this.

The female human announced the sofa was for her and our male human to “sit comfortably” and watch the big black moving picture thingy in the living room. What she failed to recognize is that there are feline rules regarding furniture and other areas of the home, for that matter.

Rule # 1 –What’s Yours is Ours

a living room with two sofas
The new sofa arrived and the female human snapped a photo after it was situated. Note that the fur protection,(blankets and throws are not in appearance yet. Funny how they always magically disappear when other humans come to visit).

We were quite happy to have this extra space to relax on and wasted no time checking it out.

Rule # 2 – Your Comfort is Of No Concern To Us

Siamese and Black and White cat sleeping togewtherWe immediately took possession of the new sofa (as well as the old one). We so enjoy the blankets the female human puts on them for our comfort. I am purrrticularly pleased with the long part of the new sofa as I like to stretch myself out as far as I can and this area accommodates me quite well. We are thrilled with the extra room we now have, each sofa accommodates two cats, much more comfy than our former,  cramped situation!

The female human is always griping about not File Apr 17, 3 50 37 PMhaving a comfy place to sit but since she’s always that last one home there is no spot for her. The male human, if he’s lucky, squeezes himself in on one side of the new couch and the female human is left with the chair. Now if any humans are reading this and wondering, “Why don’t they just move the cats?” you are obviously not owned by felines and attempting to explain this phenomena to you would be fruitless.

Rule # 3 –Any Place We want to Lounge Is Our Space (if It fits we sit)

a siamese cat and black and white cat sitting in a sinkThe female human often points to areas of the house saying things like, “Keep off the counter”, “You are not allowed on the dining room table”, blah, blah, blah.  We find this quite amusing and wonder when she’s ever going to give up this sham that we have boundaries.  I’ve included a few photos of us expressing to the humans that there is absolutely no place that is “off limits” to us. Siamese Cat in a baskekt

New furniture, old furniture or for that matter, any place in the house, belongs to the felines in residence.

img_1123Sometimes the humans  will cruelly close doors in an attempt to keep us out of places. There is always a work around for this. The female human tries to keep me out of her downstairs office but thankfully she has glass doors so a pitiful expression and much howling always does the trick (if the door is not glass, no worries, just implement the howling).

I sincerely hope you, my feline friends, have found these rules helpful and that my human readers will finally come to the inevitable  conclusion that cats will lounge where cats want to lounge, it’s how we roll.

Oliver and Alberto Get Fearless

Alberto Opines on the Preparation

AlHeadOliver and I (Alberto) will be co-authoring this post as we each have a lot to say about the topic. Neither of us had been to the “place of white coats” for a number of months but the female human believes in this thing she calls a “wellness exam”. This means she takes us to the place of the white coats for no reason whatsoever. It boggles this kitty’s mind, if we’re well, why do we need an exam, especially since we’ve learned in our short lives that this visit to the place of white coats is not such a pleasant experience.

The day arrived and we were bundled up in our carrier and shoved into the back of the noisy moving machine. While we howled in the back seat, the female human spoke in a soothing voice, telling us this would be a “fearless” visit (there’s that word again). What  in the heck did she mean?

Oliver Opines on the Arrival

OllieHead
I was in the middle of a chorus of one the favorite song of my people, when the female human turned off the moving machine. The next thing we knew she was pulling the carrier out and walking toward a building. She opened the big door and we we found ourselves inside a place we’d never been before.PendoreilleVet

The first thing I noticed (when she moved the carrier so we could see) was that there were two signs, one said “Dogs” and the other said “Cats”. Hmm, very interesting.  As we are a feline only family, I wondered who these “dogs” were and when they would show up. Thankfully, we were never subjected to these dog creatures.cat area at Pend Oreille Veterinary Service

There were no smells to help me sniff out any information. The place was quiet and “smell-less”. Okay, so far so good. The female human roamed around to visit the “dog” area and then wandered over to the”cat” area where she inspected all the feline goodies for sale and made herself a cup of coffee. Nice she could entertain herself while we remained captives of our carrier.

She did finally offer us some cat treats but neither of us were in the mood to snack, nor did we want to indicate any approval of this situation we were in.

AlHeadAlberto Opines on the Exam

Soon we heard footsteps and the next thing we knew we were whisked into a room. AlDocAndVetTEchOh horror, what was going to happen to us now? Much to my surprise, the female human unzipped the carrier and invited us to come out and inspect the room. Well, well, that was interesting. I sniffed around a bit and then jumped up on the silver table to check that area out. The place was nice, no bad smells at all. As a matter of fact, there was a pleasant smell, kind of relaxing and music that this feline found especially calming. I’m a climbing feline so I hopped up on the counter and checked out the cabinets. To my delight, I discovered a jar with a bunch of feathers. Boy this place was all decked out for felines. Curiosity satisfied, I decided I’d lounge on the silver table. and wait to see what was next. The door opened and a very nice lady named Marsy came in. She talked to me asking permission before she stroked my fur (I do appreciate polite and respectful humans).   I took quite a fancy to her and found no need to run to my female human and hide myself under her coat. Soon, another lady arrived  (the human Alberto from FelineOpines looks lovingly at vet tech at Pend Oreille Veterinary Servicecalled her Dr. Ponsness) and this lady (although wearing the dreaded white coat) was respectful and very nice as well. Although both Marsy and the Doctor poked me a little and put a silver thing on me and listened to my chest (who knew, I had no idea there was anything to listen to in there), they talked to me and petted me the entire time.  I was feeling quite loved and calm. At one point, I even forgot my human was there as I cuddled up to Marsy.   When they were done, they let me continue to hang out on the counter and watch what they were doing with Oliver. All in all, an extremely pleasant experience.

Oliver Opines on the Exam

Oliver from the Tribe of Five with Dr. Ponsness at Pend Oreille Veterinary ServiceI had no interest in hanging out on the silver table but I did wander around and inspect the place, sniffing table legs, trash cans, etc. Nothing but calming smells so when Dr. Ponsness picked me up, talked to me and petted me, I was a happy camper. She and Marsy  made me feel right at home, even if they did poke and Oliver napping in the exam room at Pend Oreille Veterinary Serviceprod a bit (there was the insertion of something called a thermometer that I found objectionable but it only lasted a few seconds and, in their defense, they did apologize beforehand).   When they were done, I was allowed to wander around the room again and explore. I was so relaxed and happy, I actually took a quick cat nap while my human chatted with the doctor.

After my brief respite, I did some more exploring. Marsy grabbed one of the big feathers from the jar, waved it above me Oliver plays with a feather at Pend Oreille Veterinary Serviceand we began playing. I attacked that feather with a vengeance.  I was quite fierce and I’m sure I made her a bit afraid with my aggressive moves. I hope she knows I’m a good cat and would never hurt anyone.

I must say all in all this visit was good (except for the part where they told my human I needed to lose weight) and if the female human insists on taking us again I won’t even howl on the way over (at least, not much).

The Human Opines

Alberto and Oliver allowed me some space to tell you about my experience at  Pend Oreille Veterinary Service. They have employed fear free practices for a number of years (before the term “fear free” was coined.) When they designed and built their new facility, they devoted themselves to a complete fearless experience, from the beautiful and comfortable lobby to the exam rooms, surgery suite and every other part of the hospital.

fearless vet visits for cats

Dr. Ponsness took me on a tour of the building and I was impressed. The surgery and kennels are strategically arranged so that they are not  next to the examining rooms.  Examining areas are dedicated for canine and feline patients and the imaging/consulting room is set up like a human doctor’s office so the people as well as the pets are comfortable.

The facility was designed by a veterinary architect and when I asked Dr. Ponsness what surprises they encountered during the planning and construction of the new building, she responded that she was taken aback when the architect suggested the specialized HVAC system.  It turns out, that HVAC system is pivotal in the fearless and state of the art medical aspects of the practice. It provides climate controlled areas such as the surgery suite which has negative pressure. Negative pressure is critical in controlling germs and assisting with healing. The HVAC provides climate controlled areas to fit the needs and purposes of each area of the practice and controls smells that often cause concerns in animals when they are visiting the vet.

Pheromones and soothing music are offered in exam rooms, and, as Oliver and Alberto noted, treats and toys are available to keep the felines amused while they wait. Every space has been planned with comfort, calmness and efficiency for the animal and human clients.

I saw some of the feline and canine patients relaxing in their comfy “hospital crates” and the tour of the surgery suite was very impressive,. The  lack of “medicine” smells thanks to the HVAC system serves to keep pets calm and also helps the household stay calm when pets arrive home from their visit. In the past, our felines were welcomed home from the vet with hisses, swats and angry “fuzzy tails”. This time, because there was no “veterinary smells” the other three Tribe members were calm and curious and not a hiss was heard.

I’ve been bringing my felines to Pend Oreille Veterinary Service for years to see Dr. Ponsness and Dr. Smart. My fur kids receive the best of care and I would have argued with anyone who said better care could be provided there , until we made our first fearless visit to the new facility, that is.

I cannot stress enough the importance of taking your fur kids to a practice that uses fearless methodology. Even if your vet does not have a facility designed by a veterinary architecht, there are many methods they can employ to provide you and your felines with fearless visits.

Tucker, the Tribe of Five Alpha recently had two overnight stays at the new facility and I was amazed at how balanced and calm our 14-yer old guy was when we brought him home. Normally, it takes a few days for him to bounce back from an overnight at the vets, but not this time. He was his old sassy self as soon as we unzipped the door of the carrier and sashayed into the living room to reclaim his favorite chair.

The Tribe of Five all had wellness exams recently and all responded in a relaxed, unstressed manner. Five felines with diverse personalities all responding positively to their vet visit speaks volumes.

fearless vet visit oliver from feline opinesAnd one last note, the fearless vet visit is a blessing to the worried pet parents as well. I no longer have to face taking them to the vet with fear and trepidation (and feeling like the meanest person on the planet).

Are your fur kids fearless? If not, I urge you to find a fearless practice in your area.

Tucker Opines on Healthy Eating

Siamese cat at the kitchen counter talking about gaining weight

Hello All,
As the male Alpha of the Tribe of Five, I’ve had much experience in my 12 years as far as eating is concerned. And believe me, I love to eat. I like wet food in the morning, kibble during the day, wet food in the evening and a before bedtime snack. Some cats eat to live, I live to eat.

Despite my great enjoyment of food, I have many dietary restrictions. First there’s my age (I’m twelve) and the fact that I have numerous allergies. The humans are constantly looking for the healthiest options for me and the rest of the tribe and they were ecstatic to find an extensive and in-depth review of cat foods by Reviews.com.  The article was published in November 2016 and (as the female human says) is something every cat loving person should read.

It’s a long article and far too much reading for this feline but I had my purrrrsonal assistant give me the highlights, which I will share with you. I suggest you have your lackeys…..errrr…humans read the report in its entirety..

In-Depth Study

These folks at Reviews.com are no slouches. They stated;

“We analyzed 1,759 cat food formulas and found only 152 that were produced by a trustworthy brand with high-quality, risk-free ingredients.” They also made some cool graphs to help you humans understand how to feed your fabulous felines the healthiest foods.”

They also understand how complicated the feline digestive system is;

For cats, diets need to have a number of ingredients that only animal-based ingredients can supply, and not just meat; organs are often better in this respect (yes, by-product!). Also, cats need a certain supply of minerals to help them avoid urinary tract crystals and stones. Overall, you need to first think about what your dog/cat needs and then look for diets that help you meet that.”

In other words, you just can’t feed us any old thing and expect to keep us healthy.

The Importance of Digestibility

The folks at Review.com know that just because a feline likes the taste of something the digestibility factor is important. They even made a cool chart to explain this.

catfood_digestibilitya2x

Even Cats Have to Watch Out For Those Pesky Carbs

The female human is rabidly anti-carb when it comes to their food and she’s always wondered about cards and kitties. The study addresses this but I sure hope this doesn’t mean some of my tasty snacks will be cut out!

carbsandcats

Low-Quality Ingredients Lead to Health Problems

My humans subscribe to this theory and they want to keep us as healthy and happy as possible.  Kidney disease, dental disease and obesity are a problem for felines, especially as we get older, and the best way to mitigate these issues is to make sure we’re eating healthy.

catfood_quickguidea2x1

Don’t Delay, Read This Article Today

IMHO this is the definitive article on cat food and at twelve-years of age (and being a bit on the portly side); I am going to make sure that my humans have a discussion about how we’re being fed. They think they’re feeding us healthy but are they really?

Of course any changes in the feeding schedule cannot interrupt the wet, dry and snack schedule.

I urge all my feline friends to make sure their humans read this article (and if you are of the canine purrrrsuasion, Reviews.com did a similar article on dog food as well).

Your food loving friend,
