Walk Through The Web Wednesday 8/14

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
I can’t believe it’s Wednesday already! Things in our neck of the woods are going well. Just when we got used to the D-O-G, she left for her home in Arizona. Things are not near as exciting now and the Tribe is going to take a video of the squirrel to send to KD to enjoy.

The squirrel action pales in comparison to the raccoon family antics at the upstairs bird feeder. Momma and her little hooligans are making regular visits to raid the squirrel and bird food. They are so brazen that even when The Female Human stands on the porch and takes their pictures they are not phazed. All I have to say is, they better stay away from our food!

That’s the latest here and now on to my weekly web wanderings. Enjoy!

Turkey has so, so many cats

TrurkishCats

Meowza, did you know that cats are the most beloved animal in Istanbul? They’re also one of the city’s biggest attractions. Stray cats usually take the best seats at cafes and restaurants in Istanbul without anyone even bothering moving them. They maneuver around tables and customers, inside and out of the buildings in search of the most comfortable spot.

No one knows the exact number of cats in the city although someone said there could be a million. Even though they are popular, these stray kitties still struggle to survive. Thankfully, there are people like Rana Babaç Çelebi, the founder of the Cats of Istanbul, who care for them along with a few other groups as well. Cats of Istanbul has about 300 active volunteers who get together whenever action is needed, like fixing some cages in shelters, setting up cat houses in the neighborhood, feeding the cats when the weather is bad or simply just giving them affection.

Some districts have created cat houses in parks, while other individuals spend money and time to install beautiful cat houses around their neighborhoods. There are three big shelters in the city, which Sable and Çelebi said don’t have the best reputation for care. And as the value of the Turkish lira drops, the cost of medicine and food has increased, which makes their cat-relief work even harder.

The first felines arrived in Istanbul on merchant ships from Egypt during the Ottoman Empire. The people of the day gladly kept the newly arrived cats because the city’s wooden houses attracted a lot of rats and the felines helped keep the rat population under control. Now the humans of Istanbul are returning the favor by helping the stray cats.

Scientists may have figured out why cats eat grass

final-74

Lily loves her grass

A presentation last week at the International Society for Applied Ethology annual meeting in Bergen, Norway offered evidence on why cats eat grass and say it’s what we do when we want to fix an upset stomach.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis conducted a survey of 1021 cat owners who spent at least three hours a day observing their pet’s activities and found that of the 71 percent of cats caught chomping on grass, about a quarter wound up vomiting afterward—but roughly 91 percent of respondents reported that their cats did not appear to be ill before dining out on roughage.

So if they weren’t self-medicating a sick stomach, what happened? Well the scientists don’t have an answer for that. They did say that  it’s evolutionary behavior and, that grass consumption increases muscle activity in the digestive tract, which could force out unwanted contents. Cats have traditionally had to deal with parasites like hookworms or roundworms as a byproduct of devouring rodents, though it’s likely that most cats who aren’t on a diet of rat meat don’t have any parasites to treat. Still, the instinct to chew grass remains.

The Tribe of Five says this just might be a bunch of hooey! Some of us love snacking on grass, some of us could care less and even 16-year old Jasmine has her morning grass munch every day and she’s been following that ritual ever since she was a kitten. So much for science.

Giving cats a special food may one day help people with cat allergies

cat-allergies

The good folks at Purina may one day help humans who sniffle and sneeze around cats by changing the food the cat eats! The food would contain an antibody to the major allergy-causing protein in cats. This protein is called Fel d1. New research indicates that feeding this antibody to cats changes the protein so that the human immune system can’t recognize it, and that reduces the allergic response.

Nestlé Purina researchers conducted a small pilot study with 11 people allergic to cats. These people were exposed in a test chamber to hair from cats fed the antibody diet. They were also exposed to hair from cats fed a normal, control diet. The people had reduced nasal symptoms and less itchy, scratchy eyes with the hair from cats fed the special diet. These preliminary findings were released in June. The researchers presented them in Lisbon, Portugal.

Meowza, this would be a great thing if you can stop human sniffling by just changing our food!

NYC’s bodega cats have a feline fest on International Cat Day

BodegaCats

From “Bodega Cats of Instagram”

By day, their job is to greet people and pose in funny, whimsical ways for pictures that wind up on @bodegacats Instagram page.. By night, things get a little more intense, with bodega cats expected to walk the perimeters of their stores and keep invading vermin at bay. The iconic city cats got their big break in 2012, when Brooklynite Rob Hitt walked into his Williamsburg bodega for an egg-and-cheese sandwich and saw a photographic feline. It was “everything you would imagine in a bodega cat, so I took a picture of it,” he said. Now @bodegacats has 205K Instagram followers and its own Twitter channel at 262k followers. Hitt tries to leverage the attention for the greater good. Meow on bodega cats, I salute you!

‘Show us your cats’: Cat lovers unite for walking cat tour in Minneapolis neighborhood

CatTour

Sometimes you humans come up with really great ideas. The good folks in Minneapolis came up with a doozy. They conduct walking cat tours in their neighborhoods.  People gather at a meeting spot and then move door to door for feline viewing.  They get to meet some pretty fabulous felines and humans too.

One human said,  “A cat tour is just a way to meet your neighbors and go out in the community and meet people with animals and pets.”

Well, we have walking art tours, history tours, winery tours, etc. in our neck of the woods. Why not a cat tour? Watch the video and see what you think.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 8/7

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
First, my weekly update on the Tribe and our Human. Things are going better for The Female Human and we think she’s finally getting back to her old self. One little relapse on that thing she calls an ulcer (she should try our food, we never have such issues with our tummies). Anyway, it’s good to see her getting back on track and life resuming the way we like it.

It’s been really hot here (hot for our neck of the woods anyway). The Female Human’s momma raccoon has shown up with her new babies to mooch food from the soft-hearted Female Human. I must say, they are fun to watch from the safety of the house and when they’re done eating and traipsing through our little pond they head back to their home in the woods. Here are some photos of the masked gang of freeloaders.

Aside from the heat and the moochers, things are pretty quiet. We are getting used to the visiting dog but she will be leaving next week.

I hope you enjoy this week’s web wanderings and take care my furiends,

Cat of The Year Awards: Inspiring tails of the UK’s finest felines

HonoredCats

Once agains, our furiends across the pond showcase the amazing and wonderful things that felines do. This story may bring a tear to your eye but it’s worth the read because these true stories beautifully illustrate the incredible bond we felines have with your humans and just how amazing (and in some cases life saving) sharing your life with a feline can be.

Catlantis, the pawsome new cat cafe is opening soon in London

Catlantis

Oh my whiskers, those British folk know how to honor the feline (or moggies as they call them). This place looks amazing.

Catlantis will cater to Londoners whose lifestyle doesn’t allow them to have a pet, offering them somewhere to have a cup of tea or coffee while getting to know the resident moggies.

Catlantis plans to have 15 rescued cats in the cafe, all fostered from a local shelter. Part of the revenue created from the cafe will be donated to feline welfare charity Cats Protection, which provides cats and kittens in shelters with food, veterinary treatment and care.

While animal themed cafes have been controversial in the past (see: foxes, owls, micropigs…), London is already home to the successful Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, which opened in 2014 and is still going strong.

A truly heroic cat napper

CatNapper

Now this woman is a cat napper I can support. Seems that a Long Island nanny cat-napped her employer’s cat because they wanted to euthanize the cat because he’s elderly.  This sweet human is fighting for custody of the feline. Thank goodness the judge has a good head on his shoulders and has stated that  “Either this is worked out and we decide who is going to get custody of this cat … or medical records show this cat is in pain and suffering,.”

The nanny, , who cared for the couple’s two young children for years, said she took Tigger after she arrived for work on July 2 and learned they wanted to end his life. She left behind a note that read, “I can’t let this happen.” Well Tucker and Jasmine (the 16-year old Tribe siblings) say, paws up to this wonderful human!Paws Up award by FelineOpines.net for humans who do amazing things for cats

Cancer gel for cats and dogs is being developed in Tri-Cities. It could soon help people too

Isopet

Not only is this amazing news but it’s happening in the  Northwest, not so far from where we live.  This promising new cancer treatment developed in the Tri-Cities has been used on its first commercial patient — a long-haired cat named Drake.

Vivos Inc. of Richland has spent three years developing and testing a cancer-killing gel after licensing the technology from Battelle, which developed it at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland.

So far, it is being used at the company’s first pilot clinic for treating dogs and cats.

But the startup company’s goal is to eventually offer the treatment for human patients, injecting a high dose of radiation directly into a tumor without damage to healthy tissue.

“The technique we developed is exactly what we will use in humans — identical,” said Michael Korenko, Vivos chief executive officer. The treatment for Drake the feline decreased his tumor by 80%!

Pet owners interested in treatment now may fill out an application online at radiogel.com under IsoPet.

Zut a-claws! Stowaway cat’s 1,500-mile French road trip

Stowaway

There seem to be a lot of felines who end up on sightseeing excursions.

Eight-year old squish cat took a 1,500-mile road trip to the south of France after stowing away in her owners’ caravan. Her humans thought they’d left her at home but the day after they had crossed the Channel by ferry last month they were stunned to see her crawl out of a storage area as they ate their lunch.

The couple had to pay £500 to get her a rabies jab and a pet passport to ensure she could return to Britain legally. And Mr Brown had to stay on for an extra two weeks while the arrangements were being put in place.

After Squish’s humans jumped through all the necessary hoops to get her back home the trio had racked up about 1,500 miles by the time they arrived home.

Walk Though The Web Wednesday 7/24

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
Lots of goings on at our house last night. About 9:00 p.m. The Female Human learned about a weather alert coming our way, high winds (75mph) thunder and lightning storm.

final-60

“Make it stoooop!” Oliver

The Tribe is NOT fond of weather like this and since we have so many huge windows in our house we have to find a safe place to hide…..with The Female Human who is more of a scardy cat than we are.

final-59

“I’ll get out of the laundry when you make that scary storm stop!” Alberto

It was a loooong night and each feline had their own way of coping. The Female Human is a bit sleep deprived today but all was well at our house but there was much chaos in other areas. The wind did a lot of damage, trees were toppled and lightning struck houses and trees. We checked in on our local feline furiends and everyone was safe and sound inside.

Stay safe my furiends and I hope you enjoy this week’s web wanderings.

Britain’s New P.M.’s first job is to impress the cat

Larry

Larry the cat currently holds the official role of chief mouser to the Cabinet Office.

Britain has a new Prime Minister but he has yet to pass his hardest test…approval from Larry, the Chief Mouser.

Larry probably shed few tears when Theresa May left as, although she said she was “very happy to see Larry” she did say she was more of a dog person. There was some controversy as to how David Cameron got along with Larry but Cameron waved a photo of himself with Larry curled up in his lap to prove they were pals,

How will Larry and the new P.M., Boris Johnson get on? Only time will tell.

How to stroke a cat…according to science

PetACat

Oh my whiskers, why must you humans complicate everything? Now a bunch of scientists have gotten together and studied the correct way to pet cats. First, not all us felines are the same. Second, our humans get to know us and what we like and don’t like. It’s not rocket science people, no matter how hard you try to make it more complicated than it is.

Here is some of what the study discovered. “Although a lot of cats do like being stroked, and in certain contexts will choose us over foodhuman interaction is something they have to learn to enjoy during their comparatively short sensitive period– between two and seven weeks old.

When it comes to human-cat interactions, the characteristics of humans are also important. Our personalities and gender, the regions of the cat’s body we touch and how we generally handle cats, may all play an important role in how the cat responds to our affections.”

If you particularly uneducated about felines, the article even includes signs of cat enjoyment and cat dislike or tension.

Not even cats, the inspiration for Cats, like the trailer for Cats

CAtsMusical

The trailer for this year’s adaptation of Cats is out but sadly, it appears that when viewed by real felines, those real felines are underwhelmed. A number of humans had their cats view the trailer and then tweeted about their reactions, many with videos.  The pained expression on this feline’s face is pitiful.

Almost every cat that viewed the trailer seems either deeply unimpressed, disdainful, or vocally displeased with what’s put before them.

I can’t help but enjoy the irony of the hubris of you humans, putting a movie together about cats, called Cats and then waiting until it was finished to see if real cats would appreciate it. MOL!

Canadian police mistakenly use cat filter during news conference on double murder

CatPolice

Clearly the Canadian police missed my Walk Through The Web Wednesday feature of June 20th where I reported on the Pakistani politician who gave his entire speech with a cat filter on. So since they didn’t follow my news reporting, the Canadian police have found themselves in the position of apologizing after a cat filter was used during a Facebook live-streaming of a news conference about a double murder, which gave the presiding officer whiskers and ears. Sergeant Janelle Shoihet, from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police of British Columbia, blamed “technical difficulties” for the error. “Technical difficulties – MOL!  Humans, ignore my cutting edge news reporting at your own risk!

Why Do Cats Lick You?

CatsLick

I bet our Female Human has wondered about this when one of us drags our scratchy tongue along her hand, face, etc. There are a number of reasons, we lick you to calm you down, to show you affection, and to mark you as our territory. And, if we lick you excessively, we’re probably trying to tell you that you stink!

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 7/17

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
It’s been an eventful week. As those of you who follow my Wednesday wanderings know, things have been rather…err…exciting at our house. I thought I’d let each Tribe member bring you up to date.

final-58

Lily

I figured out that the dog can’t get on our cat tree so I climb to the very top and hide out until the offensive canine is gone. This is working very well for me as Oliver and Alberto (who enjoy chasing me around) can’t get to me either!

final-57

Oliver

Thankfully, meal time is not afffected by our canine visitor and best of all, The Female Human doesn’t have as much time to monitor my eating so it’s pretty much a win-win for this feline.

img_2351

Alberto

It’s been working out great for me. The Female Human allows me into Jasmine’s domain in the back of the house and I’m loving it. There are new things to explore and I can roam around back there without being bothered by the visiting canine.

final-56

Jasmine

My life used to be so serene and quiet and now I have to share my domain with that idiot, Alberto. He’s always hogging my toys and cat scratcher and trying to take The Female Human’s attention from me.

img_2350

Tucker

I’m still on meds but at least I’m not weaving and bobbing around the house. One good thing about this medication-nothing bothers me anymore, the visitors, the dog, even the vacuum monster. It’s all cool dude.

So as you can see, we are all coping with this change in our circumstances. As for the Female Human, she had her follow up with her regular doctor. It looks like the ulcer was caught early and she’s staying away from anything that can aggravate it (and she’s down to one medication). Unfortunately, the caffeine ban has made her a little ditsy and she’s not quite so perky in the morning.

So that’s the latest with us. How are you all doing? I hope you are doing well and that you enjoy my web wanderings this Wednesday.

Cat Lady Refined

CatFAshionista

Oh my whiskers, I’ve seen how some of you feline lovers dress and some of you could use a little fashion assistance. Well break out the catnip and sing the song of your people because CatFashionista.com is here! If you’re not sure if you are a cat fashionista here is the company’s definition: “You’re an unabashed cat lover and you’re not shy about it. You don’t keep the love for felines only in your heart. You wear it on your sleeve… Literally.  We hear you. Because you care about design, we’ve curated a collection of apparel and accessories that express your inner cat lady, while keeping your look chic. You’re a fiery, fearless, cat fashionista.”

Well, I don’t know about your humans but our human fits this bill purrfectly. As a  matter of fact we caught her purr-using the outfits on the site and she’s drooling over the blue velour jacket with “Cat Lady” embroidered on the back!

Indiana City Letting Residents Pay off Parking Tickets by Donating Cat Food to Local Shelter

CatParking

You know how I love when humans find creative ways to help felines and this is very creative. The good folks in Muncie, Indiana were very creative when they announced a new partnership aiming to help out their local shelter, which is currently home to over 350 cats and kittens in dire need of supplies.

For one week only, the police department allowed residents to pay off their parking tickets by donating cat supplies including litter and food to the shelter — no cash required.

“MACS has partnered with the Muncie Police Department with a wonderful program that allows people who have parking tickets to pay their tickets with cat/kitten food, litter, wet/pate canned food, beds, blankets, etc. in lieu of paying with money,” the post explained.

“We’re in dire need of supplies for the large volume of cats/kittens being cared for here at MACS, and they keep pouring in our doors,” the post continued. “We are incredibly grateful for the the support we receive from the community, and this is such a wonderful opportunity to help your local shelter.” Well done humans, well done!

More than 120 dogs, cats in path of Tropical Storm Barry in Louisiana are flown to safety

Storm

Paws up for the Humane Society who is always involved in getting shelter animals to safety before disasters. The Humane Society evacuated animals that were up for adoption in Louisiana shelters, which helps increase capacity for dogs and cats that may be displaced in the storm.

Ahead of Tropical Storm Barry making landfall along the Louisiana coast, more than 120 dogs and cats in the storm’s path were flown to safety. They were flown flown to Manassas in northern Virginia,t where they were taken to nearby shelters and prepared for adoption.

Meet Fiji, A Ship’s Cat

ShipCat

Did you know there are still ship’s cats? One made her appearance in Cleveland last weekend on board one of the 11 tall ships visiting there. Her name is Fiji and she’s been around the world twice, and she’s only four years old.

Fiji is the official ship cat of the Picton Castle. She often disembarks from the ship and explores ports of call as the ships travel around the world for the various festivals they take part in. She was adopted from an animal shelter in Fiji – hence the name – at just six weeks old.  Sometimes Fiji explores a little too far from the ship as she did in Buffalo, New York. She went on an extended shore leave but fortunately found by someone who googled her name and the name of her ship and managed to reunite her with her human shipmates.  The Picton Castle is a three-masted tall ship based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is sailing the Great Lakes during the summer, making port in several cities across North America.  Fiji (and her other feline crew mate) are listed with the rest of the human crew on the ship’s website.

Hotels are meow accommodating cats

HotelCats

I’ve reported on cat hotels and even hotels for humans that accept cats but now there are hotels that not only accept felines, they embrace us.

“We have the necessities when you’re traveling with a cat,” said Mark Hayes, manager of the Kimpton Aertson Hotel in Nashville. “A litter box comes with the room as well as a little bed for them and we put out some bowls for food and water. We don’t necessarily supply food but we’re happy to source anything locally. We know that cats can be pretty finicky with their diets, we kind of let the guests guide us in what they need. We also have toys available.”

Housekeeping will even scoop the litter box for you – meowza! And Kimpton hotels welcome feline guests for free. They began the cat program thinking they’d just provide litter boxes but then they noticed humans were arriving with their cats on leashes and in strollers and decided there was an opportunity to expand their feline services.  They now have litter boxes, toys, comfortable cat beds and the concierge is well versed in cat friendly businesses in the area and good places to walk your feline. Now, savvy businesses have sprung up around the cat friendly  hotel and even a cat cafe called Mewsic Kitty Cafe. There is no charge and no deposit for feline guests. (The Female Human is thinking about giving herself a little vacay and checking us all into a cat friendly hotel.)

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 7/3

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hey There Furiends,
It’s my web wandering Wednesday. I hope you enjoy the news I scratched out for you this week.

Before I present my stories, I thought I’d do a quick catch up. Things have been a little crazy in our house and our Purrsonal Assistant has been a bit distracted so her work product is not up to par (translation, she has not transcribed all our responses to our blog yet and we are mortified that this is taking her so long).  She also has some friends at our house. Very nice people but there is a bit of an issue with The Tribe regarding ONE of the visitors.

Here is how the conversation went:
final-48Female Human, “Al, we’re having some friends come to stay for a while. Very nice people. Oh, and they have a dog.”
Alberto, “Excuse me I thought you said they were bringing a dog.”
Female Human, “Thant’s right but she’s a sweet dog and you’ll love her.
Alberto , “You’ve got to be kitten me!”

I will report on more of this next week.

Another update. I featured a fantastic cat group in one of my recent Walk Through The Web Wednesdays called THIS CAT IS C H O N K Y  The Tribe of Five has been quite active in this group and we’ve learned some things about the fantastic people there. Absolutely NO shaming about anything is allowed. They are true cat lovers and many of them are dedicated to adopting older cats from shelters. Oh,  and these humans have a wicked sense of humor and are very creative. I can’t tell you how many times The Female Human has spit her coffee across the computer screen because she was laughing so hard at a post there.

final-49

She posted this photo of Oliver with the statement that he’d recently been put on a diet and feared starvation was imminent.  The comments were delightful and outright hysterical but these photoshopped pics were the best.

final-51final-50

Okay, I’ve digressed enough, on to the news items. I hope you enjoy them.

UI online survey aims to determine how face shape affects cats’ health

CatFaces

University of Illinois researchers are asking cat owners to participate in on online survey to determine whether cats’ face shapes are associated with certain health and wellness characteristics. They are purrticularily interested in finding out if brachycephalic cats — the breeds with flat, squishy faces  experience breathing issues similar to those of squishy-faced dogs.  So if you are a squishy faced feline, have your human wander on over to take the survey and help these folks out.

FELINE FANS DESCEND ON SOCAL’S ANNUAL CATCON TO CELEBRATE OUR FURRY FRIENDS!

Cat

One of the biggest feline events in the country, CatCon LA made a big splash again last weekend. One of the top feline photographers, Erica Danger, was there to capture every beautiful feline at the purrfect moment. A Kat Von D beauty bar was set up to teach everyone how to get the perfect cat eye. – Apryl Triana, a Phoenix, AZ-based tattoo artist was there providing cat tats and there were many, many more cool feline related booths. There were lots of cat-loving celebrities and best of all, Best Friends Animal Society had an adoption village for felines to find furever homes.  I must insist that The Female Human attends next year!

AI Keeps Cats And Their Kill Out of The House

AICatDoor

Who says automation and AI is useless when it comes to cats? Not Ben Hamm,  an engineer at Amazon who , noticed his cat often brought dead animals back to the house as a ‘gift.’ It wasn’t that he wasn’t thankful for the presents but it just was unpleasant  to wake up to a dead rat. So he decided to explore AI  and built a model that would lock the cat door when his pet tried to bringing a dead animal with it. Now the article has a lot of geek speak to explain how it works and if  you like that kind of stuff  you can read more and watch the video.  Hamm says the prototype is working well, only locking the cat out once when it shouldn’t. He gets texts with photos of his cat. Pretty cool, who’d have thought I’d be reporting on AI and cats in the same article?

19 Cat Myths That Need to Go

final-52

“You humans believe some of the dumbest things about felines. We need to talk.” Lily

You humans believe some of the silliest things about us and some of the things you believe can be downright harmful to us felines. Like the belief that cats can be vegans, no, no and NO! Now The Tribe enjoys a gnosh on some wheat grass now and then but we are obligate carnivores. We NEED meat.

And then there’s the misconception that you should get a cat because we are so low-maintenance. You can leave us alone over the weekend.  Uh NOPE, we like companionship and even though we are all different purrsonalities, we miss you when you’re gone.

And then there’s the “cats always land on their feet” myth. Unless we don’t. Yes we can twist in midair to position ourselves to land feet first, there are times when we, just like the best Olympic gymnast, don’t stick our landing.

You can read the other 16 myths in the article just to be sure you’re not believing some old wives tale about your felines.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 6/26

Hello There Furiends,
Alberto here with my weekly web wanderings. Not too much to report from The Tribe this week. I can report that Lily and Tucker have been living on the edge lately.

Feline Chair is Purrfect

CatChair

Once again our friends across the pond show their great love of felines. This chair is cat-specific and even comes with a cover that can be changed and washed in case it gets a bit furry. Now the people that wrote this article said that the chair would be a substitute for a human’s lap…clearly that writer does not know felines. At a price of 12.99GBP (about $16.48 US) the chair is a steal. I expect to see Moggies all over the British Isles lounging in one of these soon.

Good Grief! Step Away From The Washing Machine!

WsashingmachineCat

This is a cautionary tale for all my feline friends and their humans. Recently, a human who is in the habit of checking the laundry in her washing machine to make sure none of her three cats have crawled inside, thought she’d done her due diligence and hit the “wash” button.

Thirty five minutes later when the cycle was done she checked the washing and saw a white paw.

One year old Felix had found his way into the washer. She rushed him to her veterinary hospital. Poor guy had lost his vision and had pneumonia from the amount of water in his lungs, he did survive and is doing better now — he can see and has started eating. He’s still on oxygen. The vet has assured Felix’s human that Felix will make a full recovery but the human can’t forgive herself. People, check your laundry carefully! And thank goodness Felix will be okay.

Car Shows Are For Cats Too

CatCArShow

Car shows are not just for humans, evidently they’re for cats too. Boost, the cat, has been attending car shows since she was a kitten and she’s now stealing the show wherever she goes. How do her humans know she enjoys these shows? Her human sayus, “I can dangle the keys and she’ll come running”.

And Boost is not the only feline at these car shows. You can often see Cal, a one year old Sphynx there too. Cal often wears costumes to the shows.

Lil BUB’s Birthday Party Has Us Feelin’ Feline

junelilbubbirthday

Lil Bub celebrates her birthday by doing good for homeless cats.

OK, full disclosure, when it comes to Lil Bub, I’m a fanboy. And my favorite feline starlet did not disappoint on her eighth birthday last weekend. She held a fund raiser at the Corey Helford Gallery in downtown Los Angeles for The Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats.

Lil BUB had a meet & greet, with celebrities like Jackson Galaxy and Hannah Shaw. They had party games, a bounce house, a magic show, and, of course a birthday cake. Thank you Lil Bub for using your birthday to do good things for kitties who need furever homes.

The 25 Most Cat-Friendly Cities in the U.S.

FriendliestCatCities

Dear humans, if you’re planning a move to a new city, please purruse this list of cat-friendly cities before you make your plans.

The top 25 were selected by research into cities offered the most cat-centered services and which cities had the most cat-friendly homes available for purchase. Trupanion (a pet insurance company) and Redfin (a real estate brokerage) teamed up to research this list

Trupanion analyzed the cat-centered services — perks like cat clinics, shelters and hospitals — and took note of which cities were natural homes to plants that are toxic to felines. Redfin contributed to the analysis by looking at the number of cat-friendly homes — abodes with high ceilings, litter box space and patios — available in each of the cities.

The city that topped the list, based on these factors, was Corvallis, Oregon. I’ve included the full list below.

I am proud to say that the Spokane, WA, a city about two hours away from where The Tribe of Five lives is #2. I need to get The Female Human out and about in Spokane to see what’s going on!

1.   Corvallis, Oregon

2.   Spokane, Washington

3.   Orlando, Florida

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 6/20

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
I hope your summer is going well. The Tribe is anxious to get outside and enjoy the pop-up catio but the weather has not cooperated so we snooze on the sofa and await the sunshine. You may have noted that my Wednesday feature is appearing on Thursday..our Purrsonal Assistant has been under a lot of stress lately so we allowed her a days grace on my feature, as long as it does’t happen again!

This photo is of me chillaxin’ in The Female Human’s bedroom which is the territory that belongs to Jasmine but Jasmine does allow me to visit if I behave myself. This is me behaving myself.

Since we have been forced to stay inside, window duty is very important to us because you never know what you’ll see out there. The other day we watched The Female Human pull out of the garage, stop the car and then run into the front garden waving her arms and yelling. As Oliver and I took up our post at the kitchen window we had a front row seat to the comedy that ensued. Our Human is shouting and waving her arms. The freeloader in the garden remained unfazed and took his time munching on the newly emerging flowers. Sheesh, The Female Human could use a chill pill.

I hope you enjoy my web wanderings this week and here’s to days filled with lots of treats and head scratches.

Mysterious ‘Cat-Fox’ May Be a Newly Discovered Species, Researchers Say

Okay, I will admit that I am a feline of limited scientific knowledge but this “discovery” has me puzzled.

On the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean, a strange, rarely seen beast stalks the night. Locals call it ghjattuvolpe – the cat-fox – and for the last decade, scientists have been hot on its trail, trying to unravel the mystery.

The article states that a “rare beast” has been discovered on the French island of Corsica. They call it ghjattuvolpe which means cat fox. Evidently scientists have been studying the animal for 10 years. They say it differs from domestic cats because of its large size, up to 35 inches or 90- centimeters from head to tip, wide ears, short whiskers and long canine teeth. Okay, maybe I’m off base here but this looks like a large feline with a floofy tail. There’s a video on the site but I’m still not convinced. What do you think about this “cat fox”?

Kitty Cure: New Research Suggests an End to Severe Cat Allergies Could Be in Sight

There is hope for humans who love felines but who can’t get near them without itchy eyes and sneezing fits. Purina scientists have been researching how to manage cat allergens and have recently made a breakthrough in their research. Purina announced that they have recently demonstrated “a proactive way to significantly reduce the active levels of the major cat allergen, Fel d1, at its source in cats’ saliva.”

“These allergens have created a huge barrier to cat ownership and may limit the loving interactions between cat lovers and cats,” immunologist Dr. Ebenezer Satyaraj, Director of Molecular Nutrition at Purina and lead investigator on the research, said in a statement. “Our discovery has the potential to transform how people manage cat allergens.”

I give Purina our paws up award for working to improve the relationship between felines and humans!

Cat-astrophe: Pakistani politician’s event streamed on Facebook with cat filter on

CatFilter

MOL! I can’t stop laughing about this one. Evidently Pakistani politician Shaukat Yousafzai held a press conference was live-streamed on Facebook — with the cat filter turned on. He wasn’t the only cat filtered human streamed on the event as the filter shifted to whichever human was talking. The cat filter was left on by accident and rather than calling it a cat-astrophe, I’d say it was probably the best political live stream ever done on Facebook!

Just like their mothers: in cat breeds, behaviour is inherited

final-45

“I must have inherited my love of high places.” Alberto

The human scientists are at it again. First they noted that different cats behave in different ways…DUH! So a team from the University of Helsinki studied information about 5726 cats and found differences in behavior between breeds across five different areas: activity level, sociability with humans, shyness, aggressiveness and stereotypical behavior.

Their sample of 5726 included 40 breeds (there are 71 in total, according to the International Cat Association), some of which had to be grouped, forming 19 breeds and breed groups.

You can read the findings, published in the journal Scientific Reports.  Some of their conclusions are a bit suspect to me but what do I know, I’m just a cat.

Play with Your Cat for Science: New Online Study Seeking Participants Worldwide

playWithYourCat

It’s time for you humans to step up and  play with your cats for science. Anyone who owns a cat is asked to record themselves playing with their cat and submit the recording online. The deadline is June 30, 2019. You can take part in the study here. Here are more details. So get out that cat dancer and play with your feline!

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 6/12

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Furiends,
It finally warmed up at bit here. Tucker , Oliver and the rest of the Tribe have been waiting for some warmth and sun puddles. I’m more of a “go with the flow” kinda’ guy and I’ve just been hanging out on the cat tree, waiting for summer.

“Just me hanging out and waiting for some warm summer weather.” Alberto

I hope you enjoy this week’s web stories.

This Cat is Chonky: The fat-cat Facebook group lifting humans from despair

final-31

“I’m not chonky, I have big bones.” Oliver

Chonky is a fantastic Facebook Group and  founder Tori Diaz says she receives messages from group members who want her to know how Chonky has cheered them up during their most stressful moments. “What hit me the hardest,” Diaz says, “were the people responding saying the group has helped them through suicidal thoughts, depression and severe medical problems.”

What I like about Chonky is that rudeness and judgment are not allowed, in other words, no chonk shaming.

I sent the Female Human over to the page to see if she can join. I think this would be a purrfect place for Oliver to hang out.

Cat Goes to Groomer for a Haircut, Leaves Looking Like the Feline Version of a Slinky

SlinkyCat

I often hear The Female Human meowing about her latest haircut but this is ridiculous. This cat (named Oliver) was taken to the groomers by his human grandfather and evidently the human thought this cut was a great idea. His human was not happy and posted about Oliver’s debacle on Twitter. Oh the humiliation, the shame. Poor Oliver! Good thing Oliver is a handsome fellow despite his ridiculous hairdo!

Vancouver Luxury Catios

Catio

Summer is coming and it’s catio time. A catio is a cat patio and the purrfect place for a feline to safely enjoy the great outdoors. The Vancouver SPCA ran a contest and lucky Canadian felines were the recipients of 6 catios.

There are all kinds of cations, some are fancier than some human’s outside space. The Tribe of Five has a pop up cation what we enjoy very much. We wrote about it in a two part blog post.

A chic Houston house where all the residents are cats

HoustonCatShelter

An amazing human named Patti Thomas turned her home over to felines needing their furever home. Her premise was that cats needed a comfortable environment to make them more house friendly and calm. This project was so successful she has donated another home as a cat shelter.

The home is decorated beautifully in ’50s-style teal and brown, complete with matching throw rugs. A leather couch faces a fireplace; a basket of cat magazines stands nearby. In the kitchen, a turquoise coffee machine shares counter space resident felines. The air is fresh and redolent of lavender thanks to constant cleaning by volunteers.

We give this idea our “Paws Up” award.

Whiskas Pet Food’s Interactive Voice Assistant Encourages Kids’ Curiosity

Whiskas.png

I have to admit, I’m still trying to understand why a cat food company created a purrsonal assistant but still, the thing sounds cool. Since cats are curious, Whiskas decided to create a purrsonal assistant that’s curious too. It’s called Mia and Mia asks questions rather than answers them.

Mia works using a motion sensor. When she senses that humans are nearby, the kitty assistant will start a conversation, asking questions about a whole variety of topics that kids will find interesting and offering multiple-choice answers. Mia is 3D-printed and comes in Whiskas’ signature colors of white and purple.

We told our staff to try and find out how much this little item costs but so far, no luck.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 6/5

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Furiends,
Alberto here with my Wednesday web wanderings.  Nothing much new around the Tribe except for Oliver’s diet. I think he’s being a bit dramatic about the whole thing but I’ll let you decide.

final-39

“Life has lost it’s meaning. I’m not sure if I can hang on. Diet may be the ruin of me.” Oliver

“Please send kibble..soon”Oliver

Have a wonderful week and don’t believe everything Oliver says!

Feline High Five Pays Off Big Time

High Five

Did you and your human enter the High Five contest sponsored by GreaterGood.org and Jackson Galaxy? Meowza, the prizes were pawsome including a $5,000.00 grant for the winner’s shelter. And Lil Bub was a judge!

Lest you think this was just a fun and frivolous event, the Cat Pawsitive Program is a life-saving program for shelter and rescue cats that aims to increase feline adoption rates by instructing shelter/rescue staff and volunteers how to implement positive reinforcement training for cats, that includes teaching them to high-five. You should find out how to get a Cat Pawsitive program started in your shelter.

Why Can’t My Cat Be A Vegan?

CatVegetables

I never thought I’d have to say this to my readers but….People, cats cannot be vegetarians!!! Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of meowing about vegan kitties and I can’t stress enough how dangerous this is. I’m not going to go into all the details here but you can find them in this ASPCA article.

Here are the major points. We felines are obligate carnivores. That means we need to eat meat to survive. Our digestive systems are not built for a plant only diet (it’s kinda like feeding cows meat, just doesn’t work).

We need the amino acid taurine to survive and taurine is only found in animal sources.  Taurine deficiency leads to heart disease.  We also need high levels of protein and we don’t digest carbs too well.

Bottom line, you could kill us if you don’t feed us what we need. And if you are feeding raw, you need to make sure we are receiving the nutrients we need. You may see us gnawing on the random blade of wheat grass but this does not mean we want a veggie diet!

Suki the Canadian Adventure Cat

Suki

Suki the Adventure Cat

Some of you out there are still poo-pooing the idea of adventure cats so I give you Suki. Suki has been to 12 countries and even spent two months in Europe last year. Suki’s human says, “She’s just a regular cat. I don’t think about it much until we are on the trail and she’ll get recognized. People are so ecstatic to meet her. Generally, it’s not something I think about much. We’re already out there taking photos [as a career] but getting to do it with Suki is amazing.” Evidently her 1.4 million Instagram followers and her jet set lifestyle hasn’t gone to her head. I need to get the staff busy and up our Instagram followers!

Meow-troid? Cat-slevania? Either Way, Gato Roboto Is Excellent

cat game

I know many of you humans are fond of video games. I played the Friskies Cat Fishing game on my mini iPad when I was a kitten but I grew out of it. Still you humans are fans and now, there is a video game that features a  space pilot named Gary who  crash-lands on a small planet, gets stuck in his ship, and sends his cat (who caused the crash in the first place) on an adventure to find help.

Kiki the Kitty explores an abandoned research facility that’s crawling with hostile enemy life, she collects weapons and suit upgrades on her journeys. She is a brave feline who swims and pilots a submarine.  I say, with a feline as the main star of this video game I might need to try this stuff again!

Researchers strapped video cameras on 16 cats and let them do their thing. Here’s what they found

CatCamera

So this happened. Scientists strapped cameras on 16 cats and followed them for four years. They published their findings in Applied Animal Behavior Science from Manchester Metropolitan University. I watched the video with The Female Human and what I saw was that these scientists noted we felines greet each other with nose bonks, sometimes charge our enemies, cover up our poop and play with things. Hmm, I wonder how much this study cost.

When asked why they used cats the researcher said it sprung from her own questions about her cat’s behavior outside. Evidently they started with 21cats but 5 of them were not having the camera around their necks. The researcher also noted that when inside; we felines follow our humans around thereby indicating they were attached to their humans.

Forgive me for sounding snarky but anyone who lives with cats, who loves their cats and who spends time with their feline furiends could have told you all of this. Evidently humans are not always so great at seeing the obvious.

Walk Through the Web Wednesday 5/29

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Furiends,
Wednesday came fast this week, I guess that Monday off got us all discombobulated. It’s been a busy day. Oliver went to the vet because The Female Human is concerned about his portly proportions. Ollie tried to tell me what a harrowing experience he had but when the video of his visit surfaced, I called “foul” on his description of the visit. You decide for yourself.

The good news is that Ollie’s blood work came back A-OK and The Female Human is relieved but the bad news is that Ollie is now on a diet. This should be interesting. This was his reaction when he was told he would be dieting.

final-33

D-I-E-T is a four-letter word! Oliver

Poor Ollie. At least I hope he enjoys my web wanderings this week.

Kitty Ends Up On The Wrong Side of The Law

Kittymugshot

Oh how I love it when you humans are creative. If there ever was a prize for the BEST “found cat” post, this is it. Big Boy Bubbles even managed to land himself a number! I sure hope his family finds him but if not, he will be put up for adoption at the San Diego Humane Escondido campus.

Company Gets It’s Whiskers in a Twist and Sues over the Name of a Cafe

final-34

Santa Cruz coffee shop Cat and Cloud Coffee says it received a cease and desist from Caterpillar Inc. — because they use the word “CAT” in their shop name and merchandise.

The large corporation has trademarked “CAT” and has taken legal action against the small business to stop them from using it. Owners of the small business say they first received the letter in August of 2018.

What hubris this company has…how can you trademark the word “cat”..are you kitten me??? And could someone please explain to me how there is any similarity between this café and Caterpillar???  Caterpillar machines, I hiss in your general direction.

Cats Gain the Upper Paw in Japan

JapaneseCats

It’s official according to a nationwide survey on cats and dogs as pets that was conducted by the Japan Pet Food Association, cats rock in Japan! The total number of dogs in 2018 was 8,903,000 but the total number of cats was 9,649,000. There are lots of charts and figures for you humans that like that sort of stuff. As for me, all I care about is that cat’s rule in Japan!

Cats (and Dogs) in Tornado Affected Oklahoma Are Sent to Maryland and Virginia

OklahomaStornVictims

The Humane Society of the United States assisted in transporting cats and other animals from shelters in tornado affected Oklahoma areas and placed them with shelters and rescues in Virginia and Maryland.

This allows the shelters in impacted areas to have more room to take in displaced animals. By transporting adoptable animals out of shelters in these communities, the opportunity for them to find a furever home is increased. And, then shelter capacity is increased in order for displaced animals to stay safe until they’re reunited with their families.  Two paws up for the Humane Society of the United States and the shelters that are helping.

Yoga With Cats Craze Spreading to Europe

final-35

Human, why is this block on my yoga mat? Alberto

The yoga with cats craze has hit France. The Female Human never gets to do any yoga without the full attention of The Tribe of Five. Instructors say that having cats around enhances the feeling of wellbeing. If this is true, why is she always yelling at us to move? We felines are natural yoga masters, just watch us stretch. The Female Human needs to chill.
