Walk Through The Web Wednesday 10/9

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
final-1How are things in your neck of the woods? Our woods are getting a bit windy and frosty these days. Now mind you, we felines understand that we live in a four seasons kind of place but good grief, there needs to be some rules about when these seasons start. We already had snow last week (before The Female Human had time to get rid of the leaves in the yard!). Thankfully the snow didn’t stay but brrrrrr is it chilly and windy out there. Oliver was watching the enthusiastic waving of the flag on our front porch the other day.

Last weekend it got so chilly that The Female Human turned on the fireplace (yes, she’s lazy, we have a gas fireplace so all she has to do is flick a switch and not drag in a bunch of wood.) Oliver loves the fireplace so much that he even made a movie about it. Sometimes I wonder about my brofur.

The Tribe is back to snuggling together again too. I do sometimes wonder if Oliver has any concept of personal space though.
final-3

I checked in with Jasmine and she said she is feeling great now that The Female Human has been giving her Scruffy Paws Kidney Vitalize Chews. And wonder of wonder, Miss Picky really likes them! She’s put on a bit more weight although our furry diva has always been very tiny.

final-4

Alberto, what are you doing in my room? I’d really rather be alone!” -Jasmine

All in all, things are quite fine at our house and, as you can see, I’m just chillin’ and waiting for The Female Human to open a drawer or cabinet so I can get into it and look for rubber bands, plastic, or any other enticing thing to play with.

A different kind of love

Love doesn’t always look the way you think it should. Take Mo and Cricket for instance. Mo, a feline, is in love with his next door canine neighbor, Cricket.  Mo loves Cricket so much that he heads over to Cricket’s house every day.

George the cat becomes a star thanks to his solo adventures on buses and trains

George

George, a 7-year old rescue Tabby is a special breed of adventure cat because he likes to choose his own adventures and go sans humans. He’s tried to hitch a ride to Scotland, regularly sneaks onto public busses ending up miles from home and even likes to take the occasional train trip. His travels have now been chronicled on Facebook and his page also helps those who have encountered George, far from his home, contact his humans. There are many “George sightings” on his page.

George’s usual trips take him away from home for about three hours and, if he is gone longer his humans know that it’s time to put out the alarm. When George is home he is a great comfort and feline nursemaid to his human, Dennis who suffers from dementia. And George loves to be held and petted by any humans he comes across outside of the house.

One of George’s recent adventures took him in the direction of a  safari park with a bunch of school kids. George didn’t make the full journey however, his human said, “Fortunately the bus stopped and chucked him out before arriving there.”

The epitome of Feline Fashion – a behind the scenes look

Those of you who follow my Wednesday web wanderings know I love to report on this event. The Algonquin Cat’s Annual Celebration & Cat Fashion Show has been happening for 10 years in early August. It’s a benefit for The Mayors Alliance for NYC’s Animals. This year the theme was “It’s a small world” and cats were dressed up to represent nine different countries. Be sure and watch the behind the scenes video.

Revenge is sweet – and wet!

catinpool

You humans say that you can be petty to each other, well evidently that goes for cats too. These two got into a hilariously petty (and one-sided) cat fight.

The story was first posted on Twitter, the feline’s human said, “My cat came inside soaking wet, so I did some investigating and found this. She posted a video. Then she noted in another Tweet, “We did a further investigation, it was plotted revenge.” Both videos document the altercation and are hilarious (unless you’re the cat that got shoved in the pool).

How to hold a cat

HoldCat

Snark warning – I can’t believe a human actually wrote an article about how to hold a cat. Cats are all different and you need to get to know us so you can understand HOW we want to be held and IF we want to be held. Take Lily for instance. She does NOT want to be held and for the foolish human who refuses to believe this, The Female Human always has a supply of bandages available.

For every rule about holding a cat, there are cats who break those rules so, humans, read this article if you must be remember, not all cats are alike.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 7/17

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
It’s been an eventful week. As those of you who follow my Wednesday wanderings know, things have been rather…err…exciting at our house. I thought I’d let each Tribe member bring you up to date.

final-58

Lily

I figured out that the dog can’t get on our cat tree so I climb to the very top and hide out until the offensive canine is gone. This is working very well for me as Oliver and Alberto (who enjoy chasing me around) can’t get to me either!

final-57

Oliver

Thankfully, meal time is not afffected by our canine visitor and best of all, The Female Human doesn’t have as much time to monitor my eating so it’s pretty much a win-win for this feline.

img_2351

Alberto

It’s been working out great for me. The Female Human allows me into Jasmine’s domain in the back of the house and I’m loving it. There are new things to explore and I can roam around back there without being bothered by the visiting canine.

final-56

Jasmine

My life used to be so serene and quiet and now I have to share my domain with that idiot, Alberto. He’s always hogging my toys and cat scratcher and trying to take The Female Human’s attention from me.

Tucker

I’m still on meds but at least I’m not weaving and bobbing around the house. One good thing about this medication-nothing bothers me anymore, the visitors, the dog, even the vacuum monster. It’s all cool dude.

So as you can see, we are all coping with this change in our circumstances. As for the Female Human, she had her follow up with her regular doctor. It looks like the ulcer was caught early and she’s staying away from anything that can aggravate it (and she’s down to one medication). Unfortunately, the caffeine ban has made her a little ditsy and she’s not quite so perky in the morning.

So that’s the latest with us. How are you all doing? I hope you are doing well and that you enjoy my web wanderings this Wednesday.

Cat Lady Refined

CatFAshionista

Oh my whiskers, I’ve seen how some of you feline lovers dress and some of you could use a little fashion assistance. Well break out the catnip and sing the song of your people because CatFashionista.com is here! If you’re not sure if you are a cat fashionista here is the company’s definition: “You’re an unabashed cat lover and you’re not shy about it. You don’t keep the love for felines only in your heart. You wear it on your sleeve… Literally.  We hear you. Because you care about design, we’ve curated a collection of apparel and accessories that express your inner cat lady, while keeping your look chic. You’re a fiery, fearless, cat fashionista.”

Well, I don’t know about your humans but our human fits this bill purrfectly. As a  matter of fact we caught her purr-using the outfits on the site and she’s drooling over the blue velour jacket with “Cat Lady” embroidered on the back!

Indiana City Letting Residents Pay off Parking Tickets by Donating Cat Food to Local Shelter

CatParking

You know how I love when humans find creative ways to help felines and this is very creative. The good folks in Muncie, Indiana were very creative when they announced a new partnership aiming to help out their local shelter, which is currently home to over 350 cats and kittens in dire need of supplies.

For one week only, the police department allowed residents to pay off their parking tickets by donating cat supplies including litter and food to the shelter — no cash required.

“MACS has partnered with the Muncie Police Department with a wonderful program that allows people who have parking tickets to pay their tickets with cat/kitten food, litter, wet/pate canned food, beds, blankets, etc. in lieu of paying with money,” the post explained.

“We’re in dire need of supplies for the large volume of cats/kittens being cared for here at MACS, and they keep pouring in our doors,” the post continued. “We are incredibly grateful for the the support we receive from the community, and this is such a wonderful opportunity to help your local shelter.” Well done humans, well done!

More than 120 dogs, cats in path of Tropical Storm Barry in Louisiana are flown to safety

Storm

Paws up for the Humane Society who is always involved in getting shelter animals to safety before disasters. The Humane Society evacuated animals that were up for adoption in Louisiana shelters, which helps increase capacity for dogs and cats that may be displaced in the storm.

Ahead of Tropical Storm Barry making landfall along the Louisiana coast, more than 120 dogs and cats in the storm’s path were flown to safety. They were flown flown to Manassas in northern Virginia,t where they were taken to nearby shelters and prepared for adoption.

Meet Fiji, A Ship’s Cat

ShipCat

Did you know there are still ship’s cats? One made her appearance in Cleveland last weekend on board one of the 11 tall ships visiting there. Her name is Fiji and she’s been around the world twice, and she’s only four years old.

Fiji is the official ship cat of the Picton Castle. She often disembarks from the ship and explores ports of call as the ships travel around the world for the various festivals they take part in. She was adopted from an animal shelter in Fiji – hence the name – at just six weeks old.  Sometimes Fiji explores a little too far from the ship as she did in Buffalo, New York. She went on an extended shore leave but fortunately found by someone who googled her name and the name of her ship and managed to reunite her with her human shipmates.  The Picton Castle is a three-masted tall ship based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is sailing the Great Lakes during the summer, making port in several cities across North America.  Fiji (and her other feline crew mate) are listed with the rest of the human crew on the ship’s website.

Hotels are meow accommodating cats

HotelCats

I’ve reported on cat hotels and even hotels for humans that accept cats but now there are hotels that not only accept felines, they embrace us.

“We have the necessities when you’re traveling with a cat,” said Mark Hayes, manager of the Kimpton Aertson Hotel in Nashville. “A litter box comes with the room as well as a little bed for them and we put out some bowls for food and water. We don’t necessarily supply food but we’re happy to source anything locally. We know that cats can be pretty finicky with their diets, we kind of let the guests guide us in what they need. We also have toys available.”

Housekeeping will even scoop the litter box for you – meowza! And Kimpton hotels welcome feline guests for free. They began the cat program thinking they’d just provide litter boxes but then they noticed humans were arriving with their cats on leashes and in strollers and decided there was an opportunity to expand their feline services.  They now have litter boxes, toys, comfortable cat beds and the concierge is well versed in cat friendly businesses in the area and good places to walk your feline. Now, savvy businesses have sprung up around the cat friendly  hotel and even a cat cafe called Mewsic Kitty Cafe. There is no charge and no deposit for feline guests. (The Female Human is thinking about giving herself a little vacay and checking us all into a cat friendly hotel.)

Hello Furiends,
Alberto here. I sure hope your summer is going better than ours! Our main staff and General Lackey ended up in the emergency room on July 4th with a newly diagnosed ulcer. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m as sympathetic as the next feline but I did have to ask myself, “How does this affect me?”

final-53

KD the (gasp) dog at our house waiting for the squirrel to come to the upstairs deck.

In addition, we have some human furiends staying at our house who have a …get ready for it…DOG! The Tribe has never seen a dog and worse, never heard a dog bark! I have demanded access to the bedroom at night. Oliver spends his time hiding under the table in the living room and Lily runs around with her big eyes even bigger.

final-54

This is Tucker at the vet. The meds made him pretty woozy.

Tucker could care less but that might be due to the fact that the medication he was on zonked him out so bad he couldn’t walk without stumbling. This resulted in an emergency visit to the vet on Sunday (fortunately our place with the white coats, Pend Oreille Veterinary Service is open 7 days a week (at least fortunately in this case but not so great that The Female Human can now drag us there any day of the week!). He was so out of it The Female Human didn’t even have to put him in the carrier. She just wrapped him in a beach towel.

The vets take care of the Tribe very well and even though it took the poor guy  a few days to recover he’s now on new meds and back to his sassy, treat-begging self.

Remember how I had to apologize on The Female Human’s behalf last Wednesday? Well, she’s still behind but working hard to catch up. We are giving her a bit of a break as long as she promises to respond to all our correspondence for us by the end of the week.

Okay, enough about us, let’s get to this week’s web wanderings!

11 Facts About Hemmingway’s Cats

Ernest Hemingway

I had to ask The Female Human, “Who is this Hemmingway person and what’s the deal about his cats?” She said the short version of the story is that Ernest Hemingway was given a white six-toed cat by a ship’s captain . Now many of the cats who live at his home (which is now a museum) are descendants of that original cat, named Snow White. Now all the cats at the museum are polydactyl.  Hemmingway  named all of his cats after famous people and the museum follows that tradition today.

There’s lots of interesting information about these felines. As I mentioned they are all 6-toed, they survived hurricane Irma, one of the cats was “jailed” and a federal complaint was filed against them. For more information on these facts and the other 7 facts, you’ll have to read the article.

Gatos and Beans, Alabama’s 1st cat café, opening August 1

GatosAndBeans

I love reporting on cat cafes, especially when they have something unusual to offer. This cafe has amazing feline art like the mural in the photo above. Gatos and Beans will be a combo adoption center, cat therapy place for people who can’t have cats at home, and a café / bar for humans. ‘Sounds absolutely purrfect to me.

Gatos and Beans is a family affair: The Steward family,Kelli, Stephen and Stephen’s two sons are the owners. Kelli has worked at a local veterinary clinic for more than 20 years and was looking for a new animal related endeavor. In November 2018, they won second place in REV Birmingham‘s The Big Pitch Competition, and since then, they haven’t looked back.

Gatos and Beans will operate like most of the 99 or 100 other cat café’s in the country. You will buy a ticket for coffee and time with the fabulous felines. And if you want more, you’re always welcome to upgrade to get a fancy coffee drink, beer, wine, or a snack. If you live in the area you can get your pre-opening offer now, or keep checking their website to see when they open reservations.

Catcam videos reveal cats don’t sleep all day

final-55

Tucker is very serious about nap time.

This one is filed under my “Duh! Why did you humans spend time and money on studying this?”

Maren Huck, a behavioral ecologist at the University of Derby, in the United Kingdom, recruited 21 English felines and put cameras on them.  Of the 21, 16 tolerated the Oreo-sized cameras enough to count as participants in this project.

This human felt that  cats #1 activity is sleeping. This was not what her study proved.  Huck said, their top activity actually was “resting” – not sleeping, and the study showed that another preferred pastime was “exploring,” which Huck said amounts to “sniffing at plants or things.” There’s a whole lot more stuff in this article but I ask you humans, did you really need to spend the time and money for this?

Liam Gallagher assures brother Noel that his cat is safe amid feud

Gallagher

Liam Gallagher holds his kitten Sid, which he adopted from Wood Green, The Animals Charity. Picture: Wood Green, The Animals Charity

I don’t follow human music but evidently this Liam Gallagher (the former Oasis frontman) and his brother Noel had a spat and he took the argument a bit too far when Liam involved the cat, suggesting his brother doesn’t even think about kidnapping the cat. ‘And don’t try and kidnap the cat either, we’ve just employed Ross Kemp as his close protection officer,’ he said. Liam quickly apologised, saying: ‘My sincere apologies to my beautiful mum and my lovely niece Anais for getting caught up in all of this childish behaviour, I love you both dearly LG x.’

He has also found himself in the position of responding to concerns regarding the cat. ‘Did you kidnap Noel’s cat?’ a fan tweeted. ‘Wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole,’ the singer responded. Well that settles that then. Like his brother, Liam is a devoted cat fan, and last year he gave a home to two unwanted felines, who were being looked after at The Animals Charity in London.

People, people, if you can’t get along, PLEASE  leave the cat out of it!

Artist designs tattoo sleeves for hairless cats to keep them warm in winter

TatooSleeve

Feline fashion is a “thing”. I purrsonally know a fabulous feline fashionista, Coco the Couture Cat, but this is a new kind of feline fashion. Artist and animal fashion designer, Airie McCready, has tapped into a niche market with her inspired invention Tattcats. The sheer jumpers are made with a soft material that’s good for the cat’s skin, and are designed to look like a sleeve of tattoos to keep your hairless cat warm this winter. “These cats get cold because they don’t have any fur,” McCready said. So now my hairless feline friends can stay warm and comfy and look edgy too. Rock on my furiends, rock on!

Hello There Furiends,
Well, we’ve had some staff issues again and my regular Wednesday column is appearing on Thursday this week! I would insist that there be some repercussions regardly this slacker behavior but I am not an unreasonable feline and therefore will let this little “faux-paws” slide, this one time!
I hope you enjoy my web wanderings for this week.

Frozen and Unresponsive Cat Makes Miraculous Recovery

Fluffy, the cat was found buried under a mountain of snow on Thursday, Jan. 31. She was found by her humans in a snowbank in Kalispell, Montana where she lives. The day she was found the area experienced temperatures of 8F and below zero temperatures the day before.

When Fluffy was found she was rushed to the Animal Clinic of Kalispell. Her temperature was so low that it didn’t even register on a thermometer!

They used warm water and blankets to bring her temperature up but after two hours her temperature was still too low. She was transferred to the emergency room and after a few more hours she finally began to show signs of recovery.

Fluffy is now fully recovered and at home with her humans…safely indoors!
Two paws up for this amazing success story and furiends, if you live in colder climes, STAY INSIDE!!

Cat Keeps Things Moving at Train Station

A furry feline is keeping a watchful eye on passengers as they go through the gates of a train station in Israel.

The cat sits on top of the ticket-reading machine, observing the back and forth of humans through the gates.

Some folks stop and give the kitty a head scratch. Others ignore him.

The popularity of the subway cat reached the government offices of Petah-Tikva. The mayor, Rami Greenberg, visited the famous feline, thanking him for bringing more attention to Petah-Tikva and offering the cat treats.

I love stories about working cats and this feline seems to have a very interesting job! There are videos on the site that capture him during his daily work schedule.

Cat Interrupts Premier League Soccer Game, Dominates Field for Close to 4 Minutes

A black cat showed up on the field at Goodison Park stadium in Liverpool, England, during a Premier League match between Everton F.C. and Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C.

The feline spent close to four minutes giving the players a tutorial by weaving showing them how it’s done by weaving through obstacles, making it from one end of the pitch to the other end with no interruption..

The game commentator took full advantage of the feline’s time on the field and gave play-by-play commentary , “It looks like a fully grown … cat. He drops a shoulder, jinks one way, goes another.”

The crowd cheered the agile feline as he evaded security and the players who tried to catch him. He was finally escorted off the field.

This Cat’s a Ham and it’s Made Him Famous

Eddie Kergan is a model citizen and ambassador for Wasaga Beach, Ontario. He’s an honorary scout, a promoter of local businesses, a voice for a local charity campaign, a supporter of Wasaga’s events, featured on the cover of a charity calendar, and he ran for mayor in the last election.

Wasaga Beach is famous around the world because of the work the well-dressed Eddie Kergan is doing with daily posts on different aspects of the community. So what if his grammar and spelling aren’t purrfect? I mean what can you expect,  Eddie Kergan is, a 20-pound Tabby with 250 bow ties and fans across the world that call themselves “Eddiots”.

Eddie came to live with his humans from the local shelter and has bonded most closely with Dave, a wood carver who sufferes from PTSD after a horrible accident.  Dave says, “He’s been a real lifesaver,” It’s almost like he looks beyond it. He stays right beside me the minute anxiety or depression hits.”.

Two paws up for Eddie for making his town famous, being an internet sensation and, most importantly, being a helpful best buddy to his human Dave.

New York Fashion Week Isn’t Just for Human Models

Pet models from across the country will be strutting their stuff at New York Fashion Week’s Pet Fashion show and other animal centered fashion events.  Some of these felines have wardrobes that would make a human model jealous! Sadly, being a pet model doesn’t pay all the bills, the top models earn about $200.00 to $500.00 per day of modeling.

Mrs. Parberry, a 10-year old feline from the Upper West Side is a rescue who is now the  “spokespurrrson” for New York City’s Animal Care Centers. She owns more than 100 specially created costumes by artists who work on shows for Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as by pet designers like Ada Nieves, who made the feline a flapper frock for last year’s Cat Fashion Show at the Algonquin Hotel.

Parberry’s human, Valerie Volinski, said the couture kitty has up to three fittings per outfit, and even has a custom-made mannequin head form for her hats. And, She is also on a diet after  gaining a pound.  A model must keep her girlish figure!

Hello My Furiends,
Meong, לילל,   miyavlamak,   mjau,  Μιάου.  Why am I meowing at you in Indonesian, Hebrew, Azerbaijani, Swedish and Greek? Well, because it’s International Cat Day today, of course! In honor of this impurrtant holiday I’ll be featuring stories from around the world that celebrate our feline holiday.

Miaow! The luxury London cat hotel that offers an ‘A La Cat’ menu and paw massages – Evening Standard

gray cat sleeping at the Longcroft cat hotel

If we’re going to highlight International cat related news items, we must highlight posh feline accommodations across the pond. If any of my feline furiends are planning to travel to the UK, posh digs are a must. Make sure your humans book you into one of the Longcroft Cat Hotels.  Rooms are temperature controlled and sound proofed and, if you travel with a kitty buddy, there are double rooms. Order off the a la cat menu which offers plates of slow cooked chicken, salmon and king prawns on bone china, and be sure to book a staff member,  trained by vets, to give you a “relaxing paw massages”. I say the humans in the US need to think about opening hotels like this!

Tokyo Lucky Cat Temple Draws Instagramers – Rappler

Tokyo lucky cat temple

If you’re traveling to Japan, you don’t want to miss the Lucky Cat Temple in Tokyo. The  Gotokuji temple has long attracted spiritual visitors with its thousands of figurines of beckoning white cats, thought to bring good luck. Lately, another group of visitors have been visiting, : Instagrammers.

One visitor said, “I actually Googled ‘Instagram spots Tokyo’. This was named one of the most ‘Instagrammable spots.'”  Don’t forget to put this on your itinerary if your travels take you to Tokyo and make sure your human snaps a shot of you sitting next to one of the statues with one paw up.

International Cats, 10 Unusual Breeds from Around the World – Getty Images

Siberian cat

Just when you thought you knew everything about cat breeds….these photos come out. The pictures of these majestic felines are amazing and the information about them is even more interesting. Did you know that it’s considered good fortune if a Japanese Bobtail crosses your path? And there is a breed of cat from Turkey that is indigenous to the Lake Van region of Eastern Turkey, These cats are snow-white  and is said to be one of the oldest domestic breeds in the world.  And then there’s my majestic friend in the photo, the Siberian cat. These felines are rugged and their thick, luxurious coat allows them to thrive in the subartic climate of Russia. Russian fairy tales depict this cat as magical creatures who protect children. No offense to my Siberian cat friends but IMHO all us felines are magical creatures!

DNA Study Shows How Cats Used Humans to Take Over the World – Haaretz Israel

CatDNA

We felines were famous long before the internet was invented and were a part of the ancient human world. A DNA study went back thousands of years and found evidence of two major dispersals from the Middle East, in which people evidently took cats with them. Genetic signatures the felines had on those journeys are still seen in most modern-day breeds. Researchers analyzed DNA from 209 ancient cats as old as 9,000 years from Europe, Africa and Asia, including some ancient Egyptian cat mummies.

With our ancient and proud heritage, I think you humans should show us a little more respect!

Get Catty! Celebrate International Cat Day by Looking Like a Kitten – The Indian Free Press Journal

cat fashion

For my final  world-wide cat article, we’re hopping over to Mumbai, India. Many feline fashionistas think Karl Lagerfeld, who made his kitty Choupette into a style icon is the cat’s meow of feline fashion but there are other designers that can qualify. We cats have inspired kitten heels, catwalks and much more. Designer Aniket Satam, from Mumbai says, “Cat fashion is about unabashedly celebrating the love for this feline divinity. Embrace the diva-like quality that comes with the feline species. They have always been these mystical creatures who are so intriguing. Felines have this star-like quality that appeals to me the most,”   And to that I say an enthusiastic “Meow!”
