Walk Through The Web Wednesday 4/28

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends!
I hope things are nice and springy in your neck of the woods. It is lovely and spring is definitely springing in our neck of the woods but The Human is having some issues with this. She has watery eyes and a runny nose every day and calls this strange condition “allergies”. With humans being so fearful about everything these days she said she feels like wearing a sign around her neck that says “It’s only seasonal allergies” when she goes out. She says these allergy thingys are because of these notices she gets almost every day.

I must say that this feline is a bit flummoxed as to how a text alert can make a human’s eyes water and nose run!

Oliver and I are still suffering through the dreaded D-I-E-T. The Human is not only reducing our kibble to near starvation levels, she’s also trying to make us exercise. Oh the pain and humiliation! I believe The Human is secretly feeding skinny Lily but so far I’ve not been able to catch her in the act.

As for Oliver and I, we purrfer to be couch (or bed) potatoes) and now Oliver has joined me in our evening “cat TV” watching sessions.

Now that Oliver has horned in to my TV time, I find I have to burrow under the bed covers just to get some alone time.

“Yes Human, what was so important that you had to interrupt my nap?”

The Human gushed this week when she came home and saw this sight.

“No it wasn’t a cuddle. I just came over here to rest my eyes. I didn’t realize Lily was on the sofa too.”

Well, enough about us, let’s get to this week’s web news.

Feline CKD sees new treatment possibility

As many of you know, our Angel Jasmine suffered from kidney disease in her last few years of life. We have many furiends who have this disease as well and the news that there may be a promising treatment for this makes me want to jump up and yell “WHOOPEE!”

The article I found said that  a novel cell-derived molecular therapy might offer a promising approach to treating chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats.

Piedmont Animal Health and The Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) is currently evaluating the intrarenal injection of a recombinant human chemokine (CXCL-12) to treat feline kidney fibrosis. (Phew, that was a “sciency” mouthful!)

Preclinical studies have so far indicated that the therapy has the ability to restore normal kidney structure in cats with clinically induced fibrosis. These studies have also provided evidence as to how the treatment acts to address changes in the kidney that can be associated with CKD damage.

And, a subsequent clinical pilot study demonstrates the feasibility of administering CXCL-12 with no obvious side effects over a nine-month study period.

CKD is a progressive and debilitating condition common in older cats. There are currently no available treatments for the reversal of its effects. The Human gave Jasmine sub-Q fluids every other day and Scruffy Paws Kidney Vitalize chews as well as a kidney diet. These things helped keep her kidney numbers safe but did not cure the disease.

Imagine how happy the human was to read,  “These preclinical and clinical study findings suggest our first collaboration could make a big difference in the lives of cat owners and their beloved pets,” says Piedmont’s chief scientific officer, Doug Hepler, PhD. “Anyone who has had a cat with chronic kidney disease knows how heartbreaking it is to watch their decline and be able to do very little about it. Our goal is to change that story to a much more positive one.”

What wonderful news this is and we are purraying that this new therapy would work to treat early kidney disease for all our furiends! For those of you who are interested in the study, you can read it here.

Pedigree cats seized in raid find new home

Two of the confiscated kitties

Oh my whiskers, I’ve heard of raids on human’s homes but normally the police find contraband….not cats!

The Thai police made a drug raid on a home and in addition to drugs they found… felines. They decided to auction the six cats (five Scottish Folds and one Bengal) and thankfully the auction winner was Nutch Prasopsin, who runs a Facebook page followed by 3 million cat lovers. Those cat lovers helped her raise the 100,000 bahts ($3186.00) winning bid for the kitties.

“I was very excited. I had very much hoped that the cats would end up in my care. I’ve been following their status since the very first day,” she told reporters.

The auction was held after a 30-day window expired for the owner, who remains at large, to come forward and claim the cats and prove they were not purchased with drug money. The confiscated cats will share their new home with Nutch’s 20 other cats.

The regional narcotics control board said the cats had suffered an ordeal and it was important they be auctioned off as a group.

“They were living together so they would be familiar with each other,” she said. “If we separate them, this may cause them stress or have psychological effects.”

The money generated at the auction will be held by police as a seized asset. I sure hope they take that asset and donate it to help kitties in Thailand!

The Kitty Convict Project

The Female Human and her sister have run a local lost and found pet page in our community for a number of years and when it comes to cats, if I’ve heard them say it once, I’ve heard them say it 100 times, “Think Lost, Not Stray!”

The innovative idea of the orange collar is to identify an indoor cat who is found outside as an “escapee”.  The Kitty Convict folks say, “it brands your indoor cat as a convict… it signals to the people of the world that your cat belongs inside.”

The Kitty Convict Project says in the US more than 7 million pets go missing every year. Of those, 26 percent of missing dogs and less than 5 percent of lost cats are reported and returned home.

The good folks at Dr. Elsey’s (makers of one of the the world’s best solution for felines with “litter box issues”, Cat Attract, are promoting the Kitty Convict orange collar program. They want to see your indoor cat posing in his or her orange collar! Share it on Instagram using #orangeinside™ for a chance to win a one-year supply of Dr. Elsey’s Ultra cat litter.

Where do you get such a collar? This is the one that Kitty Convicts recommends.  We have instructed The Human to order us 3 collars post-haste and will be modeling them for you in the future. But you don’t have to be fancy. Any reflective orange collar will identify you as a “Kitty Convict Project” kitty and get you home sooner!

How to tell if the cat you’ve found is a stray or someone’s pet

While we’re on the topic of lost cats, the Berkshire Humane Society published an excellent article about how to tell strays kitties from lost kitties.

We don’t want to shame all you well meaning folks who pick up cats you see outside and shuffle them to the shelter but we do want to remind you that many of these felines have homes. Now, if they were all Convict Kitty Project purrticipants with orange collars, it would be so much easier!

If you see a cat that  you might think is a stray without an orange collar, here are some signs that the cat is just visiting and has a home to return to:

The cat confidently roams around in the middle of the day

The cat appears clean and healthy

The cat does not search for food

If these apply, the cat likely belongs to someone. However, you should always try to confirm this. You can post flyers or take a photo and post to your local social media lost pet finder organization. Another thing to do is to make a paper collar (about ¾” wide) and close it with tape. Write a message on the collar like,  “Am I yours? Please call (your name & phone number).” This will show the owner that someone is concerned.

Many local veterinarians and animal shelters will scan cats for a microchip, free of charge. If the cat is microchipped with current registration, an owner can be contacted immediately.

If the cat is hiding, scared, looks dirty or disheveled, is hungry or appears in any way to be injured or distressed, do not wait to get help.

If your cat doesn’t come home, don’t wait. Begin looking for them immediately. Post flyers, post photos and information on social media, search on foot and call local veterinary hospitals, animal control officers and rescue groups.

San Marcos, TX couple makes board game with internet cats

CATastrophe: A Game of 9 Lives will be available for preorder via the crowdfunding website Kickstarter on May 4th, 2021.

CATastrophe is a 2-6 player family board game as unpredictable as cats themselves. It features iconic cats from around the world such as Cole and Marmalade, Molly Happiness, Hosico and many more. Backers of the Kickstarter program have a chance to get their own felines featured in the game. There is also a tribute to Lil Bub, who passed away in 2019.

The game’s goal is to be top cat and has enough strategy and luck to make it fun. Each player starts with nine lives. The last cat standing is the winner.

The CATastrophe team includes cat illustrator Jenny Parks (Star Trek Cats book, Marvel National Cat Day Covers) and board game illustrator Jacqui Davis (Ex Libris, Euphoria).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m sending The Human over to the Kickstater site to see what it will take to get us featured in the game!

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 9/16

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello there furiends,

I hope you are doing well. Because of the fires and the terrible smoke, walks in the cat stroller have been momentarily stopped and the windows in our house remain firmly closed. We had a nasty wind storm last week and then some fires in our neck of the woods. Many of our furiends were evacuated but we are happy to say, they have all returned to their homes now. This is a photo of one f the fires near us.

We are also having horrible air quality because of the fires in all the surrounding states. This photo might give you an idea of what it looks like – same view a few days apart.

Still, we are in much better shape than many of our Northwest and coastal furiends and we are purraying that you all remain safe. Since we can’t sit on the upstairs deck or take a stroller ride, we aren’t doing much of anything. I’m hanging out by the shower and demanding to be let in and Oliver is practicing relaxing, I think he’s got it down well, what do you think?

Stay safe dear furiends and I hope you enjoy this week’s feline news.

Secrets of famous felines revealed
Japan’s famous chill cat, Shironeko

Did you know that Grumpy Cat’s name was Tardar Sauce and that this little undersized kitten with abnormal features became an international sensation when her human began  posting pictures of her on social media? That little feline became so famous that her human was able to quit her waitressing job when the cat began raking in millions from modeling and purrsonal appearances. Sadly, Grumpy Cat crossed the Rainbow Bridge last year at the age of seven..

Lil Bub had an extreme form of feline dwarfism, that left her limbs and jaw much smaller than the rest of her body and this created that cute “tongue out of the mouth” look she was famous for. Her human, after finding that she would suffer from osteoporosis, began working with scientists to sequence her genome and help other kitties with the same condition.  Lil Bub did much to help other feilknes and was mourned when she crossed the Rainbow Bridge last year after suffering a severe bone infection.

Ollie’s purrsonal favorite feline celebrity is Shironeko, one of the most mellow cats in the world. Shironeko has been delighting fans on social media since 2006 by balancing flowers, fruits, frogs, and other items on his head. Shironeko crossed the Rainbow Bridge this year at the age of seventeen and it is our Oliver’s goal to become just as famous for being lazy….errr…chill and relaxed.

Be sure and check out the article to learn about other famous felines such as Spartacus the Serval, Sir Stuffington and Smudge the Cat.

And Speaking of Spartacus the Serval……

Spartacus, the 18 kilogram (over 39 ½ pounds) African serval managed to escape from his house and spent a number of days in the wilds of New Hampshire.

He was “trapped” near his home and returned to his family in good health. Evidently the family dog spooked Spartacus and he did a runner.

Spartacus was adopted from a zoo four years ago, has all his papers in order and lives in the lap of luxury as an indoor kitty. We are very happy Spartacus is home!

Metro Vancouver moth outbreak ‘great fun’ for indoor cats
Watch the video on Twitter.

Canadian cats in Vancouver rejoice. The moth outbreak happening there is a boon for felines. Chasing these winged insects is bringing Canadian kitties all kinds of exercise and fun. So while our furiends up north are housebound due to the smokey conditions, a few good moth chases a day will chase away the blues and boredom as well. A note, veterinarians said that the moths the cats are chasing are not toxic or poisonous but the powder the moths carry on their wings may irritate their eyes or mouths.

Cat tires of waiting for the humans to make it to the finish line and finishes the race in the front

Turkey’s capital city Istanbul is known for its massive population of cats. These felines are so involved in the human activities that they can even make a surprise appearance at athletic events.

A recent video shared by the Turkish Athletics Federation shows a cat darting across the finish line at the Balkan U20 Men’s Athletics Championship on September 13. The athletes dodged the ferocious feline near the finish line. There was a winner of the race but it wasn’t the cat!

Adorable Japanese Cat Thinks She’s a Dog Just Like Her Shiba Inu Siblings

Kiki, the adorable American Shorthair cat lives peacefully with her three Shiba Inu siblings; Saki, Ibuki, and Hazuki.Kiki acts like she’s one of the canine gang and the photos of these furry family members are taking Instagram by storm,. Check out the photos for yourself and you’ll see what a great team Kiki is with the Shiba Inus in her family.

Hello There Furiends,
Alberto here with my weekly web wanderings. Not too much to report from The Tribe this week. I can report that Lily and Tucker have been living on the edge lately.

Feline Chair is Purrfect

CatChair

Once again our friends across the pond show their great love of felines. This chair is cat-specific and even comes with a cover that can be changed and washed in case it gets a bit furry. Now the people that wrote this article said that the chair would be a substitute for a human’s lap…clearly that writer does not know felines. At a price of 12.99GBP (about $16.48 US) the chair is a steal. I expect to see Moggies all over the British Isles lounging in one of these soon.

Good Grief! Step Away From The Washing Machine!

WsashingmachineCat

This is a cautionary tale for all my feline friends and their humans. Recently, a human who is in the habit of checking the laundry in her washing machine to make sure none of her three cats have crawled inside, thought she’d done her due diligence and hit the “wash” button.

Thirty five minutes later when the cycle was done she checked the washing and saw a white paw.

One year old Felix had found his way into the washer. She rushed him to her veterinary hospital. Poor guy had lost his vision and had pneumonia from the amount of water in his lungs, he did survive and is doing better now — he can see and has started eating. He’s still on oxygen. The vet has assured Felix’s human that Felix will make a full recovery but the human can’t forgive herself. People, check your laundry carefully! And thank goodness Felix will be okay.

Car Shows Are For Cats Too

CatCArShow

Car shows are not just for humans, evidently they’re for cats too. Boost, the cat, has been attending car shows since she was a kitten and she’s now stealing the show wherever she goes. How do her humans know she enjoys these shows? Her human sayus, “I can dangle the keys and she’ll come running”.

And Boost is not the only feline at these car shows. You can often see Cal, a one year old Sphynx there too. Cal often wears costumes to the shows.

Lil BUB’s Birthday Party Has Us Feelin’ Feline

junelilbubbirthday

Lil Bub celebrates her birthday by doing good for homeless cats.

OK, full disclosure, when it comes to Lil Bub, I’m a fanboy. And my favorite feline starlet did not disappoint on her eighth birthday last weekend. She held a fund raiser at the Corey Helford Gallery in downtown Los Angeles for The Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats.

Lil BUB had a meet & greet, with celebrities like Jackson Galaxy and Hannah Shaw. They had party games, a bounce house, a magic show, and, of course a birthday cake. Thank you Lil Bub for using your birthday to do good things for kitties who need furever homes.

The 25 Most Cat-Friendly Cities in the U.S.

FriendliestCatCities

Dear humans, if you’re planning a move to a new city, please purruse this list of cat-friendly cities before you make your plans.

The top 25 were selected by research into cities offered the most cat-centered services and which cities had the most cat-friendly homes available for purchase. Trupanion (a pet insurance company) and Redfin (a real estate brokerage) teamed up to research this list

Trupanion analyzed the cat-centered services — perks like cat clinics, shelters and hospitals — and took note of which cities were natural homes to plants that are toxic to felines. Redfin contributed to the analysis by looking at the number of cat-friendly homes — abodes with high ceilings, litter box space and patios — available in each of the cities.

The city that topped the list, based on these factors, was Corvallis, Oregon. I’ve included the full list below.

I am proud to say that the Spokane, WA, a city about two hours away from where The Tribe of Five lives is #2. I need to get The Female Human out and about in Spokane to see what’s going on!

Hello Furiends,
Alberto here with my Wednesday web wanderings.  Nothing much new around the Tribe except for Oliver’s diet. I think he’s being a bit dramatic about the whole thing but I’ll let you decide.

Feline High Five Pays Off Big Time

High Five

Did you and your human enter the High Five contest sponsored by GreaterGood.org and Jackson Galaxy? Meowza, the prizes were pawsome including a $5,000.00 grant for the winner’s shelter. And Lil Bub was a judge!

Lest you think this was just a fun and frivolous event, the Cat Pawsitive Program is a life-saving program for shelter and rescue cats that aims to increase feline adoption rates by instructing shelter/rescue staff and volunteers how to implement positive reinforcement training for cats, that includes teaching them to high-five. You should find out how to get a Cat Pawsitive program started in your shelter.

Why Can’t My Cat Be A Vegan?

CatVegetables

I never thought I’d have to say this to my readers but….People, cats cannot be vegetarians!!! Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of meowing about vegan kitties and I can’t stress enough how dangerous this is. I’m not going to go into all the details here but you can find them in this ASPCA article.

Here are the major points. We felines are obligate carnivores. That means we need to eat meat to survive. Our digestive systems are not built for a plant only diet (it’s kinda like feeding cows meat, just doesn’t work).

We need the amino acid taurine to survive and taurine is only found in animal sources.  Taurine deficiency leads to heart disease.  We also need high levels of protein and we don’t digest carbs too well.

Bottom line, you could kill us if you don’t feed us what we need. And if you are feeding raw, you need to make sure we are receiving the nutrients we need. You may see us gnawing on the random blade of wheat grass but this does not mean we want a veggie diet!

Suki the Canadian Adventure Cat

Suki

Suki the Adventure Cat

Some of you out there are still poo-pooing the idea of adventure cats so I give you Suki. Suki has been to 12 countries and even spent two months in Europe last year. Suki’s human says, “She’s just a regular cat. I don’t think about it much until we are on the trail and she’ll get recognized. People are so ecstatic to meet her. Generally, it’s not something I think about much. We’re already out there taking photos [as a career] but getting to do it with Suki is amazing.” Evidently her 1.4 million Instagram followers and her jet set lifestyle hasn’t gone to her head. I need to get the staff busy and up our Instagram followers!

Meow-troid? Cat-slevania? Either Way, Gato Roboto Is Excellent

cat game

I know many of you humans are fond of video games. I played the Friskies Cat Fishing game on my mini iPad when I was a kitten but I grew out of it. Still you humans are fans and now, there is a video game that features a  space pilot named Gary who  crash-lands on a small planet, gets stuck in his ship, and sends his cat (who caused the crash in the first place) on an adventure to find help.

Kiki the Kitty explores an abandoned research facility that’s crawling with hostile enemy life, she collects weapons and suit upgrades on her journeys. She is a brave feline who swims and pilots a submarine.  I say, with a feline as the main star of this video game I might need to try this stuff again!

Researchers strapped video cameras on 16 cats and let them do their thing. Here’s what they found

CatCamera

So this happened. Scientists strapped cameras on 16 cats and followed them for four years. They published their findings in Applied Animal Behavior Science from Manchester Metropolitan University. I watched the video with The Female Human and what I saw was that these scientists noted we felines greet each other with nose bonks, sometimes charge our enemies, cover up our poop and play with things. Hmm, I wonder how much this study cost.

When asked why they used cats the researcher said it sprung from her own questions about her cat’s behavior outside. Evidently they started with 21cats but 5 of them were not having the camera around their necks. The researcher also noted that when inside; we felines follow our humans around thereby indicating they were attached to their humans.

Forgive me for sounding snarky but anyone who lives with cats, who loves their cats and who spends time with their feline furiends could have told you all of this. Evidently humans are not always so great at seeing the obvious.
