Walk Through The Web Wednesday 9/25

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,

How has your week been going? The Tribe of Five is celebrating #RememberMeThursday all week and we’re reminiscing about when we were adopted because we want to shine a light on adoption. All five of us were adopted. Tucker and Jasmine from a kind lady that rescued cats and Lily, myself and Oliver came from Panhandle Animal Shelter.  Our shelter has a fantastic program called “Home to Home” which helps pets get adopted from their homes so they don’t have to ever be in a shelter. The Female Human wrote an article about how well this program works and how it helps the animals and the humans. And guess what, this program is being implemented by shelters all over the country so, if your local shelter wants to get involved, have them click on this link to learn more.

Even shy cats are bonded to their human caregivers.

final

Lily is the shyest cat in The Tribe and she loves our Human. Don’t pick her up unless you don’t mind being slashed but when The Female Human sits quietly at her desk, Lily is in her lap.

I hate to even have to feature this article but there are still humans out there who think we felines are not as loving as canines. I guess we just have to let science prove how wrong they are!

There’s a lot of science in this article so I’ll give you the feline, Alberto version.  The scientists who did this study replicated a test that was created in the 1970’s that measured parent-infant bonds. That test placed a mother and baby in an unfamiliar room, where they would stay together for a few minutes, and then the mother would leave. Researchers watched to see how the baby reacted, and what his or her response was upon the mother’s return. Scientists have used this test with dogs but never us felines.

They brought in 79 kittens and had them each spend two minutes in a new space with their owner. Then the owner would leave for two minutes, followed by a two minute reunion period.

Many kittens did show signs of distress—like unhappy vocalizations—when their humans left. In fact, 70 of them fit the distinct attachment style.  They found that about 64.3% were “securely attached” to their owner.

What did they learn? The test outcomes followed the pattern seen with children and dogs.  So humans, we are as loving as kids and dogs, we just show our affection differently and in our own way.

10 Noises your cat makes and what they all mean

final-1

Oliver always has a lot to say, here he’s telling me off ,but our feline communications is not so simple as you humans may think. Every one of The Tribe has a different way of meowing and our human has learned what they all mean.  The pet expert in this article says a short, high-pitched meow means that we are saying hello. This may be true but it also means, when Oliver speaks this way, “I can see the bottom of my kibble bowl, please fix this problem post haste.”

A drawn out meow means we are trying to get your attention. This is true. Alberto sits outside The Female Human’s bedroom door and sings the song of his people this way as an attempt to gain access.

As for the other 8 sounds, I leave it to my feline furiends to discuss this with your humans and see if you think they are right.

Why house cats change their sleeping spots so often

final-2

I seem to be all “sciency” this week but this is a question The Female Human often asks. The Tribe is constantly choosing different sleeping spots. As the article notes, sometimes it has to do with the temperature., You don’t see Tucker and Lily cuddling like they are in this photo on hot summer days but as soon as things cool off, cuddling begins.

What I think is very cool is that we domesticated felines are exhibiting habits from our wilder days. Our ancient ancestors changed their sleeping locations as protection from predators. There are some other interesting tidbits in the article about how fascinating we felines are.

Moscow cat theater turns felines into thespians

ActingCats

The Moscow Cat Theatre has been using feline actors for 30 years. The talented felines in this troupe ride bikes, walk on wires and perform acrobatic and aerial acts.  How do they get these feline thespians to learn their roles? Dmitry Kuklachev, The theatre’s Art Director, said “A cat will never do anything under constraint.  But it is possible to make an arrangement with cats, using their natural abilities and needs. And, if there is love and mutual understanding. In general, love and respect give more than banal training. It is impossible to punish a cat backstage, and then, make her perform tricks onstage. With cats it doesn’t work.” Dmitry is a wise man!

The circus began when a circus clown’s son found a kitten who was “very communicative and cheerful”. During a curtain call, he came out with the kitten on his shoulder. And he saw that the spectators warmly reacted to this. So he started developing the tricks with cats and after 20 years in the circus established his own theatre.

This is no small theater troupe; there are about 200 feline performers, most of them acting in 12 performances. There are about 30 who are “pensioners” now and have retired from performing.

It takes about a year to prepare a new performer, from its first appearance in the theatre to the entrance upon the stage. The cats have to go through two castings, first, talent and then, tests, confirming that they are healthy.

Some of this troupe have gone on to more fame and fortune like Boris, a tomcat who works in cat food commercials.

Hmm, maybe I have what it takes to be an actor cat, I’m certainly handsome enough!

Cat survives 15-mile Las Vegas commute in car’s bumper

CatBumper

A Las Vegas Review-Journal employee was approached with a strange question. “Do you own the green or blue car parked outside the newsroom? Because there’s definitely a cat stuck inside of your bumper,”

People immediately ran to the car to check on the cat. He was breathing and seemed to be okay but getting him out of the bumper was another story. Animal control came to the rescue and dislodged the cat’s tail, then his rear legs and after wrapping the cat in a towel pulled him out of the bumper to safety.

The poor cat was dehydrated and panting but very much alive. He was cared for at the Animal Foundation by veterinarians and after he received a clean bill of health he was neutered and ear tipped as part of the “Community Cats” program. He was released back to his neighborhood and “Bumper” as they named him, took off in a hurry.

It’s still a mystery as to how Bumper got stuck in the bumper of the car but this is a cautionary tale for all you humans. Check your cars before you drive off because you could have a feline hitchhiker.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 9/18

Hello There Furiends,
The Female Human is getting back to her happy place and that makes The Tribe of Five happy as well.  Fall is definitely here. For some reason, I always feel more hungry when the weather is cooler. This is why I’ve developed a helpful skill. When The Female Human opens the refrigerator door I can hop inside in 3 seconds before she notices. This allows me to purruse the contents but I’ve got to tell you, there’s not much of interest in there.

As you know, food is of great importance to us and when The Female Human arrives with grocery bags, we are always excited, until we find out there is nothing in there for us. Note that this is not Tucker’s happy face.

final-4

I don’t see any cat treats in here.

Even though we are balanced on the edge of starvation, we still like to keep ourselves in shape and entertained so we often have cat races, or as we prefer to call them, zoomie sessions. This is Tucker and I getting ready at the starting gate, er rug.

final-5

On your mark, get set…zoom!

I hope you are all having some fun at home and that your humans don’t forget the treats when they’re shopping.

Groom Loves His Cat So Much, He Made the Feline His Best Man

PrinceMichael

You may recognize this dapper feline from the video channel Aaron’s Animals. His name is Prince Michael and I must admit I am a total fan boy. This human and feline have been besties since Prince Michael’s gotcha day and it’s only fitting that he’d be in the wedding. The human, Aaron Benitez says, ““We really are best friends, on and off the screen. I know I can always count on Prince Michael to put a smile on my face when I’m down or be my wingman when I’m up.” Now that’s what I call a purrfect furiendship. Now the only question is, will there be a wedding video on Aaron’s Animals?

“Mountain Lion” turns out to be a cat named Cookie

MountainLion

This story comes under the heading, “You city folk need to get out in nature more”. There was quite a bruh-ha-ha about a “mountain lion” roaming around a Georgetown neighborhood.  Dr. Lee Morgan at Georgetown Veterinary Hospital studied the film and came to the conclusion that since mountain lions don’t have striped tails and  the paws on this cat were far too small to be a mountain lion, it wasn’t a mountain lion. The good doctor’s theories were proven correct when a woman called the veterinary clinic and said she thought the cat in the video was her feline, Cookie. The doctor took Cookie’s file out and realized this was indeed the cat in the movie. Cookie is unusual feline, a Bengal-Burmese-Brown Tabby mix (in other words, a very long cat, kind of like me).

Cookie’s human assured the neighborhood that he is very friendly and docile and while the community pondered as to the reason the cat was roaming the around at that late hour, The vet said, “It’s not my business what [he] was doing out at 4 a.m..”

Professor Doerack, the campus Casanova cat

ProfessdorCat

Campus cats have always been a “thing” but this scholarly feline takes being a campus cat to an entire new level. Professor Doerack.is a Maine Coon and Persian mix, and has been made an official student at the University of Groningen, Netherlands complete with ID card. He does have a permanent home with former students but he still loves to roam the campus, waltzing into his favorite classrooms. It’s said that the Furry Professor averages about 150 hugs a day. (My human needs to step up her game!)

Cats

That time the CIA tried to train cats to be spies

CatSpy

My regular readers know how much I love features about cats with jobs and this one is fantastic. The CIA decided that felines would make purrfect partners to obtain secret information. They quickly figured out that cats were not the best animals for their plan.

The CIA’s idea was that cats could be used to listen to private meetings and dubbed the experiment Acoustic Kitty. This happened in the 1960s when an attempt was made to listen to an unidentified head of state who was around some feral cats. The government planned to implant a small transmitter into the back of a cat’s neck with a microphone attached by a thin cord to the cat’s ear.

Needless to say they found out post haste that this was not a good idea. A Smithsonian.com article about Acoustic Kitty noted, “Cats are infamously disobedient, but the CIA believed that with the right training, they could become spies.” Well EXCUSE ME, this feline objects to the moniker, “disobedient”. I prefer to describe us as creatures who are not slavishly devoted to serving anyone.”.

All kidding aside though, what the scientists did to these hapless kittys was not funny and I, for one am thankful this project was a failure.

10 pictures that prove the world’s most powerful weapons are less scary when there’s a giant cat sitting on them

MilitaryGiantCats

The fact that we felines sit, sleep and drape ourselves over anything and everything inspired this human to create Military Giant Cats (@ GiantCat9 on Twitter) which features giant cats in varying positions with military weapons and weapons systems.

The creator of these photos who identifies himself as Thomas, told Insider magazine, “I started this weird account because I love the absurdity of [the] internet, I love the cats, I worked several years in the defense industry.”

He says that he photoshops  photos of felines that people send him onto airplanes, submarines, battlefields, tanks, etc.

So my furiends, get your humans to send this guy a pic of you and you too may find yourself part of the Military Giant Cats group.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 9/11

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
Since my weekly feline news report falls on 9/11 I wanted to take a moment to ask you all to remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.  Let us never forget.

img_2222

An update on things in our neck of the woods. Fall is definitely coming and one of the finalindicators of this is when The Tribe members begin to snuggle with each other again. Tucker and Lily haven’t gotten near each other while the temperatures were warm but as The Female Human likes to keep temperatures a bit cool in our house, snuggling has now become a need, not an option.

final-1

“Excuse me human. I just checked the weather app and the temperature is far too cool to leave both bedroom windows open. Can we get some heat in here, Please! – Jasmine

Jasmine is annoyed because The Female Human was raised by a hearty German mother who believed a bedroom temperature was not healthy unless you could see your breath. This does not take into consideration that we felines are heat seeking creatures. This does not make Jasmine happy.

The first hint that fall is coming is that all the colors outside begin to change. I can sit at the windows and check out the changes in the woods below. It is quite pretty out there but those pretty colors mean that the white stuff isn’t too far away. The up side to that is there will be plenty of lounging in front of the fireplace!

final-2

Hello there fall, I see you hiding out there. -Alberto

But enough about us. Let’s take a look at the latest feline news I’ve discovered in my web wanderings.

Are Yawns Contagious For Cats Too?

Yawns

You know how you humans yell at each other when one of you yawns because you don’t want  to “catch” the yawn? Well, Japanese cat owner and Twitter user @nanao_ssan recently released photos to prove that we felines catch yawns too.  Go to the link and see the sequence, Now the burning question is, can humans catch yawns from cats?

Here’s Your Chance To Fund an Open World PC Game About Mystery Solving Cats

You humans spend a lot of time on PC games. Most of them, IMHO are violent and do nothing to further love and understanding as you are focusing on killing each other.

Now you can change all that. A new PC game is in development where you play as nine different cats. It’s called Peace Island, and it’s being independently created. The original creators are backed by a team of about six people thanks to the nearly $13,000 per month they’re pulling in via cat-loving fans. The game is currently being developed for PC, Mac, and Oculus VR.

The story begins when the cats of the world wake up to discover that all their humans are gone. They start off slow with regular cat antics and mini-games that include staring at walls, but soon find themselves asking big questions, such as, “Are the humans worth bringing back?”

If you humans donate $25 to their Patreon  you’ll receive a “postcard set, access to the Beta [version of the game], and the full game upon release.” It’s a pretty good offer for what looks to be a very cool open-world PC game.  In a world where the idea of humans controlling their felines is laughable, this fantasy game is a winner. My only question is, when will they come out with the tablet version for felines to play?

New scale interprets pain from feline facial expressions

CatPain

One thing vets and humans always agree on is that we felines don’t always show when we are in pain. That’s why it’s time to sound the trumpets and purr!. Dr. Paulo Steagall, an associate professor of veterinary anesthesia and analgesia at the University of Montreal, presented the Feline Grimace Scale for the first time in the United States during a session in August at AVMA Convention 2019 in Washington, D.C. Details about the FGS will be published in Scientific Reports, a journal from Nature Research, soon.

Researchers categorized and tested five facial action units indicative of pain in cats: ear position, orbital tightening, muzzle tension, whisker position, and head position. A score of 0 means absence of pain, 1 indicates moderate pain or uncertainty, and 2 is obvious appearance. A total score of 4 or more means the cat is in pain and medical care. The maximum total score is 10.

Here’s how they score it.The scoring of 0, 1, or 2, respectively, for each facial action unit is as follows:

Ear position—Ears facing forward, ears slightly pulled apart, or ears flattened and rotated outward.
Orbital tightening—Eyes opened, eyes partially opened, or eyes squinted.
Muzzle tension—Muzzle relaxed (round), muzzle mildly tense, or muzzle tense (elliptical).
Whisker position—Whiskers loose and curved, whiskers slightly curved or straight, or whiskers straight and moving forward.
Head position—Head above the shoulder line, head aligned with the shoulder line, or head below the shoulder line or tilted.

I don’t know about you, but I’m very happy my human will be able to tell easier if I’m in pain (although she knows us so well, she usually figures it out).

“It’s raining cats and dogs”?

rainingcatsanddogs

Now that fall is here this is a phrase you humans often use. The Female Human is a bit of a word nerd and she loves to find out the origin of phrases. One explanation for this term is that it comes from mythology that says cats and dogs were believed to be associated with the weather. It was commonly thought they were even able to cause or influence it. English sailors attributed gales and violent rainstorms to cats. And in many areas of northern Europe, the dog was a symbol of the wind. The wind is often pictured in old German drawings as originating with the breath of a dog. So the myth of the cats and dogs brings both concepts together to create the term “raining cats and dogs”. Full disclosure here, I have never known a feline to cause rainstorms. That is very silly as anyone who knows cats knows we are not fond of getting wet!

How To Keep Your Cat Out of Your Christmas Tree

Christmas

Now lest you think I’m featuring an article about spoiling feline fun during the Yuletide season, this is about cat safety, not spoiling cat’s fun. There are many things on the Christmas tree that are not good for us; those little cords of lights for instance, a big no-no to chew on. Anything tinselly or papery will end up in a stomach x-ray in no time. You get the idea. I am a bit of a plastic and paper obsessed feline and there is so much on a Christmas tree that I enjoy chewing. It’s one thing to have to pick up the ornaments we bat across the living room; it’s quite another thing to spend a good part of your Christmas holiday at the vet’s office with your feline!

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 8/28

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello Furiends,
The Female Human tells me that summer is coming to and end. This is very upsetting to me because she has not taken me out in the kayak yet. I know she’s had a tough few months and is extra busy trying to get things settled at our house and in her life but sheesh, this shouldn’t affect the felines!

final-82

All this upheaval has made us all a bit needy. Me in particular.  I regularly demand access to Jasmine’s domain in the bedroom. Here I am looking cute and attempting to tell The Female Human I should be able to stay. Still, despite my cuteness, I am  being punished simply because I stretched out my unusually long legs and  kicked Jasmine off the end of the bed and across the room when she was in a deep sleep. Hey, mistakes happen and look at me, how could you banish me from the bedroom when I look so cute?!

final-81

If The Female Human tries to ignore me, I just get on top of her and stare into her face and I will often put my paws on her shoulder to make sure she notices me. I am one big guy (lean but long and full of muscle) and when I am sitting on your chest and purring, it is extremely hard to ignore me -or to breathe.

I am not the only Tribe member who is a bit unsettled these days. Oliver and Tucker are always looking for extra love and assurance too.

Despite the changes we are experiencing I am happy to report that we are still the spoiled, loved pampered Tribe we have always been.

Well, enough about us, it’s time to see what fantastic feline facts I’ve uncovered this week.

Walter Chandoha’s Cat Photography: A 70-Year Love Story

WALTER-CHANDOHA-CATS-LEDE

Oh my whiskers, you humans need to get out and buy this new book, Walter Chandoha Cats: 1948-2018, “a career-spanning retrospective of the greatest cat photographer.”  by Susan Mitchell. Not only are there amazing photos of felines but some great ones of the photographer showing how he got those amazing photos (humans take note)!

Everything you need to know about ‘sheep cats,’ the curly-haired cats going viral on Instagram

SheepCats.JPG

The Tribe is made up of rescue cats who are basically mutts, no pedigrees here. But there are some pawsome felines who do have a pedigree and these “sheep cats” are one of those breeds.

They do have a breed name, which is Selkirk Rex and they are curly, even their whiskers are curly! They’re a newer breed and came into being in 1987 when a Montana cat breeder named  Jeri Newman found a curly-haired cat at an animal shelter. He bred said cat with a Persian, and gained official recognition for the new breed by the Cat Fanciers Association in 1992 and all Selkirk Rexes are descended from Newman’s original cat named, Miss DePesto.

These curly beauties can be long or short-haired and usually have a chunky build.   Their coats are dense with three layers but they require very little grooming.

Police Mascot Sgt. Butters loses his job but finds a new home

SgtButters

Sgt. Butters at his swearing in ceremony at the Mocksville Police Department.

After reading this report below, I too have some concerns about Sgt. Butters. Why won’t anyone say where he is? What’s the big cover up? Clearly, cats and politics don’t mix!

More than 50 people gathered Aug. 20 inside the chambers of the Mocksville Town Board of Commissioners, and several more stood in the Town Hall’s lobby.

It was the largest crowd ever to attend the monthly meeting of the town board, Mayor William Marklin said.

The reason for the turnout? Concerns about the fate of Sgt. Butters, the feline mascot of the Mocksville Police Department, who was taken out of the department and whose Facebook page was taken down last week. A town commissioner was reportedly concerned about the cat’s presence around a pregnant employee who has said that she cannot be around cats.

On Aug. 20, the mayor attempted to reassure the crowd that Sgt. Butters is living comfortably at the home of a friend of the police department.

Sgt. Butters didn’t attend the meeting.

Officers rescued the cat in 2018 after spotting him around the department’s building on Main Street. They nursed him back to health and he had been allowed him to stay in the police department’s offices.

Marklin said that the year-old cat’s social media page will return soon with its usual posts and pictures.

“While decisions regarding social media and Sarge Butters are made by town management and have not been addressed by the (town) board, the commitment of this agency to protect and serve the citizens of Mocksville remains our first priority, and as always, we will protect the well-being of Sarge Butters.”

Marklin spoke about the cat before a public-comment period in which four people told the town board about their concerns regarding Sgt. Butters. Afterward, the town’s board took no action regarding Sgt. Butters, and none of the five town commissioners spoke about the cat.

Alan Bagshaw of Mount Airy, a native of Mocksville, said he was troubled that town officials haven’t spoken much publicly about the cat’s fate.

“Silence is the message that the town of Mocksville has sent, to the nation and not just Mocksville,” Bagshaw said.

“True, Sgt. Butters is just a cat. We all want what is best for him.”

Bagshaw described Marklin’s statement about Sgt. Butters as ambiguous. Rumors are circulating about the cat because town officials have declined to publicly discuss Sgt. Butters, Bagshaw said.

“If Sgt. Butters is able to be cared for, and the police department is not the suitable place for him, I understand,” Bagshaw said. “But let’s talk about it. What the town of Mocksville did is set a precedent that they will treat a living creature as just a piece of property and throw it away when it’s no longer needed.”

Susan Whitener of Advance, a representative of the Save Sarge Butters Facebook Page, said that town officials should have considered the public’s concerns about the cat.

“Then one day, last week … Sarge was evicted from the probably only home that he’s ever known,” Whitener said. “Ripped from all of his fans and supporters, Sgt. Butters was gone. You should all be ashamed. I beg you to rethink your decision.”

Barry Williams of Advance acknowledged that Sgt. Butters is a good public-relations image for the police department, but he said that the public’s concern for him might be misplaced.

After the town board’s meeting, Marklin declined to say whether Sgt. Butters was living in a home in Mocksville or somewhere else in Davie County. Town Manager Matt Settlemyer declined to comment on the matter.

In addition, Police Chief Patrick Reagan declined to discuss Sgt. Butters.

‘Crazy cat lady’ stereotype has no evidence to support it, study finds

CrazyCatLady

My feline furiends, gather your female humans around the computer for this one.  A recent report found that dog owners are just as sensitive to their pets’ needs as the proverbial “crazy cat ladies” we’re always hearing so much about.

In fact, a study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science appears to debunk the idea of the “crazy cat lady” altogether, not only because dog-owners are similarly empathetic to the sounds of their distressed pets, but also because cat owners show no signs of being more anxious, emotional or depressed than their doggie-doting counterparts.

Researchers at UCLA initially hypothesized that cat owners would be more emotional, or suffer from more anxiety and depression, than other groups they observed, including dog owners and folks with no pets at all. Upon examining the results from the study’s 511 participants (264 owned pets, 297 did not), their hypothesis didn’t hold up.

“We found no differences between cat owners and the other participants on any of the self-reported measures of anxiety, depression or experiences in relationships,” the study explains. Hah! Shows what you know UCLA!

The pet owners, overall, did appear to empathize more with their dogs and cats upon hearing the animals’ meows and whimpers, as they rated the sounds “sadder” than the group who didn’t already own pets.

Interestingly enough, the sounds of a whimpering dog were rated “significantly sadder” than the meows of cats.

“We found no evidence to support the ‘cat lady’ stereotype,” wrote the study’s authors, who traced the trope as far back as 1872, when The New York Times published an editorial called “Cats and Craziness.”

So there you go, the truth is finally out!

Girls and their cats – a new book

CatLadies

Now that we’ve debunked the fiction of the “crazy cat ladies” I bring you another new book from fashion and beauty photographer  BriAnne Wills, Girls and Their Cats, which started as an Instagram photo series of the “cutest cat ladies and their feline companions”.  The  book full of portraits and profiles of 50 women – artists, entrepreneurs, writers and activists – and their furry sidekicks.

She says, “Our relationship is symbiotic. Cats give us what we need and vice versa, and we don’t take anything more. We respect each other and sometimes even learn from each other.” She has two cats, Tuck and Liza. Tuck is a black and white tuxedo who loves attention and wags his tail like a dog when he’s excited. Liza is a brown tabby, a mama’s girl with a thing for vegan cheese.

I say paws up to a book that celebrates beautiful cat ladies and the felines they love.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
final-77

It’s time to wander through the web and see what feline news I can sniff out. Things in our neck of the woods have been pretty good. Tucker has been a lot perkier lately. I’m not sure if that’s because of the meds the old guy takes or if it’s the lower temperatures but either way, we’re happy the old guy is happy. By the way, this is a photo of Tucker looking perky, he’s never been one to overexert himself.

final-76

My brother and Oliver and I are now doing the occasional snuggle but we won’t be spooning for real until the temperatures drop a lot more. Oliver likes to groom my head which I find a bit annoying but hey, he’s my brother so I humor him.

But I digress, let’s get started and see what newsworthy feline items I discovered this week.

LavvieBot S Is Evidently The Cat’s Meow

LaveBot

Okay, first of all what the heck? Who makes a litter box that looks like a washing machine? Every time any of the Tribe tries to climb into the washing machine we get yelled at.

Evidently this self cleaning litter box quietly cleans the box and the humans can even program it as to when to clean. The waste is put into a bag lined drawer that only has to be cleaned every two weeks. (Right, not with THIS Tribe!)

Other features include the humans being able to track litter box usage by cat (they track this by weight).  This is actually a “thing” at our house because our older Alpha has some, err, constipation issues. One would think he’d won a Nobel Prize the way The Female Human dances around and celebrates when his litter box visit has been successful.

Another feature LavviBotS offers is that the humans can receive a text when the cat uses the box. I discussed this with The Female Human and she said, “With five cats I’d be getting texts all day, no  thank you!”. Ah well, there’s just no pleasing some people. The LavvieBotS also can add fresh litter automatically from a storage bin.

While this all sounds intriguing the cost made our human meow….$899.00 to be exact. And if you follow the rule that there should be one box per cat, The Female Human would either have to get a second full time job or find a rich husband (and finding guys out there who are interested in taking on five felines with regular litter boxes is hard enough!)  Still, this new product sounds intriguing for the well-heeled feline.

Land of the Rising Cat appeals to those who can’t get enough of Japan’s obsession with cats

LandOfTheRisingCat

The author of the book, Land of the Rising Cat, Manami Okazaki says that there is no population on earth more fascinated with cats than the Japanese. (I think our moggie loving friends across the pond might argue with this).  In her book she covers religion, destinations, artisans, pop culture, art and design, all dating back thousands of years, Okazaki investigates weird and wonderful stories of shrines, temples and festivals, and interviews toymakers, fashion designers and even an architect to uncover the country’s love affair with cats. The book will be released in September.

Royal Canin Encourages Veterinary Visits for Cats

img_0020

This is me at the place of white coats, not my favorite place!

The good folks at Royal Canin are promoting Take Your Cat to the Vet Day and The Tribe of Five is completely behind this holiday. Our own Jasmine blogged about how important this is (that’s her in the photo).

According to a survey from Royal Canin, more than one in five (21%) cat owners said they take their cat to the vet only after it’s already showing signs of illness. Thank goodness The Female Human takes us for wellness visits.

More than 36 million households own a cat in the United States, and only half of all cats regularly receive veterinary care. Compared to dogs, where nearly 80% receive annual care, there is a major gap.

Most vet offices aren’t set up to provide a good experience for cats or their owners, which makes taking cats to the vet a very stressful experience. We are very lucky as our vet, Pend Oreille Veterinary Service built a new facility completely focused on fearless vet visits. My brother Oliver and I did a tour and blogged about this amazing place.  This was an excellent move on their part for many reasons, especially when you understand that almost half (47%) of people who own only cats said they would be more willing to take their cat to the vet’s office were it a less stressful process. Our human says a big, YES! to that. I hope all my feline furiends out there have a place to go that is as relaxing and positive as ours.

REDDIT PUBLIC ACCESS NETWORK SOFT LAUNCHES, LET’S USERS STREAM THEIR CATS AND LAMPS

reddit-public-access-network

Reddit has started a closed test for their new streaming service, the Reddit Public Access Network. A select number of users are currently able to livestream themselves and showcase the footage on the app or reddit website. The test ends on August 23 at 8 p.m. EST. and it’s unclear when the system will be returning.

Reddit users can access a myriad of channels with active chat rooms. There is a whole bunch of techno gobbledygook about what this service is, but frankly, I have no idea what they’re talking about. Those testing this new feature have been streaming quite a variety of things. There are cats playing on beds, guitars being strummed and a whole lot of people watching television. Now I admit, I am a technically challenged feline but my response to this  Reddit thing is….why? Cats already own the internet.

If You Haven’t Seen This Video Yet of a Cat “Dancing” to “Mr. Sandman,” You’re in For a Treat

I’m closing this week’s report with a little happiness. This video is guaranteed to make even the grumpiest cat smile. You’re welcome. .

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 8/14

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
I can’t believe it’s Wednesday already! Things in our neck of the woods are going well. Just when we got used to the D-O-G, she left for her home in Arizona. Things are not near as exciting now and the Tribe is going to take a video of the squirrel to send to KD to enjoy.

The squirrel action pales in comparison to the raccoon family antics at the upstairs bird feeder. Momma and her little hooligans are making regular visits to raid the squirrel and bird food. They are so brazen that even when The Female Human stands on the porch and takes their pictures they are not phazed. All I have to say is, they better stay away from our food!

That’s the latest here and now on to my weekly web wanderings. Enjoy!

Turkey has so, so many cats

TrurkishCats

Meowza, did you know that cats are the most beloved animal in Istanbul? They’re also one of the city’s biggest attractions. Stray cats usually take the best seats at cafes and restaurants in Istanbul without anyone even bothering moving them. They maneuver around tables and customers, inside and out of the buildings in search of the most comfortable spot.

No one knows the exact number of cats in the city although someone said there could be a million. Even though they are popular, these stray kitties still struggle to survive. Thankfully, there are people like Rana Babaç Çelebi, the founder of the Cats of Istanbul, who care for them along with a few other groups as well. Cats of Istanbul has about 300 active volunteers who get together whenever action is needed, like fixing some cages in shelters, setting up cat houses in the neighborhood, feeding the cats when the weather is bad or simply just giving them affection.

Some districts have created cat houses in parks, while other individuals spend money and time to install beautiful cat houses around their neighborhoods. There are three big shelters in the city, which Sable and Çelebi said don’t have the best reputation for care. And as the value of the Turkish lira drops, the cost of medicine and food has increased, which makes their cat-relief work even harder.

The first felines arrived in Istanbul on merchant ships from Egypt during the Ottoman Empire. The people of the day gladly kept the newly arrived cats because the city’s wooden houses attracted a lot of rats and the felines helped keep the rat population under control. Now the humans of Istanbul are returning the favor by helping the stray cats.

Scientists may have figured out why cats eat grass

final-74

Lily loves her grass

A presentation last week at the International Society for Applied Ethology annual meeting in Bergen, Norway offered evidence on why cats eat grass and say it’s what we do when we want to fix an upset stomach.

Researchers at the University of California, Davis conducted a survey of 1021 cat owners who spent at least three hours a day observing their pet’s activities and found that of the 71 percent of cats caught chomping on grass, about a quarter wound up vomiting afterward—but roughly 91 percent of respondents reported that their cats did not appear to be ill before dining out on roughage.

So if they weren’t self-medicating a sick stomach, what happened? Well the scientists don’t have an answer for that. They did say that  it’s evolutionary behavior and, that grass consumption increases muscle activity in the digestive tract, which could force out unwanted contents. Cats have traditionally had to deal with parasites like hookworms or roundworms as a byproduct of devouring rodents, though it’s likely that most cats who aren’t on a diet of rat meat don’t have any parasites to treat. Still, the instinct to chew grass remains.

The Tribe of Five says this just might be a bunch of hooey! Some of us love snacking on grass, some of us could care less and even 16-year old Jasmine has her morning grass munch every day and she’s been following that ritual ever since she was a kitten. So much for science.

Giving cats a special food may one day help people with cat allergies

cat-allergies

The good folks at Purina may one day help humans who sniffle and sneeze around cats by changing the food the cat eats! The food would contain an antibody to the major allergy-causing protein in cats. This protein is called Fel d1. New research indicates that feeding this antibody to cats changes the protein so that the human immune system can’t recognize it, and that reduces the allergic response.

Nestlé Purina researchers conducted a small pilot study with 11 people allergic to cats. These people were exposed in a test chamber to hair from cats fed the antibody diet. They were also exposed to hair from cats fed a normal, control diet. The people had reduced nasal symptoms and less itchy, scratchy eyes with the hair from cats fed the special diet. These preliminary findings were released in June. The researchers presented them in Lisbon, Portugal.

Meowza, this would be a great thing if you can stop human sniffling by just changing our food!

NYC’s bodega cats have a feline fest on International Cat Day

BodegaCats

From “Bodega Cats of Instagram”

By day, their job is to greet people and pose in funny, whimsical ways for pictures that wind up on @bodegacats Instagram page.. By night, things get a little more intense, with bodega cats expected to walk the perimeters of their stores and keep invading vermin at bay. The iconic city cats got their big break in 2012, when Brooklynite Rob Hitt walked into his Williamsburg bodega for an egg-and-cheese sandwich and saw a photographic feline. It was “everything you would imagine in a bodega cat, so I took a picture of it,” he said. Now @bodegacats has 205K Instagram followers and its own Twitter channel at 262k followers. Hitt tries to leverage the attention for the greater good. Meow on bodega cats, I salute you!

‘Show us your cats’: Cat lovers unite for walking cat tour in Minneapolis neighborhood

CatTour

Sometimes you humans come up with really great ideas. The good folks in Minneapolis came up with a doozy. They conduct walking cat tours in their neighborhoods.  People gather at a meeting spot and then move door to door for feline viewing.  They get to meet some pretty fabulous felines and humans too.

One human said,  “A cat tour is just a way to meet your neighbors and go out in the community and meet people with animals and pets.”

Well, we have walking art tours, history tours, winery tours, etc. in our neck of the woods. Why not a cat tour? Watch the video and see what you think.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 8/7

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
First, my weekly update on the Tribe and our Human. Things are going better for The Female Human and we think she’s finally getting back to her old self. One little relapse on that thing she calls an ulcer (she should try our food, we never have such issues with our tummies). Anyway, it’s good to see her getting back on track and life resuming the way we like it.

It’s been really hot here (hot for our neck of the woods anyway). The Female Human’s momma raccoon has shown up with her new babies to mooch food from the soft-hearted Female Human. I must say, they are fun to watch from the safety of the house and when they’re done eating and traipsing through our little pond they head back to their home in the woods. Here are some photos of the masked gang of freeloaders.

Aside from the heat and the moochers, things are pretty quiet. We are getting used to the visiting dog but she will be leaving next week.

I hope you enjoy this week’s web wanderings and take care my furiends,

Cat of The Year Awards: Inspiring tails of the UK’s finest felines

HonoredCats

Once agains, our furiends across the pond showcase the amazing and wonderful things that felines do. This story may bring a tear to your eye but it’s worth the read because these true stories beautifully illustrate the incredible bond we felines have with your humans and just how amazing (and in some cases life saving) sharing your life with a feline can be.

Catlantis, the pawsome new cat cafe is opening soon in London

Catlantis

Oh my whiskers, those British folk know how to honor the feline (or moggies as they call them). This place looks amazing.

Catlantis will cater to Londoners whose lifestyle doesn’t allow them to have a pet, offering them somewhere to have a cup of tea or coffee while getting to know the resident moggies.

Catlantis plans to have 15 rescued cats in the cafe, all fostered from a local shelter. Part of the revenue created from the cafe will be donated to feline welfare charity Cats Protection, which provides cats and kittens in shelters with food, veterinary treatment and care.

While animal themed cafes have been controversial in the past (see: foxes, owls, micropigs…), London is already home to the successful Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium, which opened in 2014 and is still going strong.

A truly heroic cat napper

CatNapper

Now this woman is a cat napper I can support. Seems that a Long Island nanny cat-napped her employer’s cat because they wanted to euthanize the cat because he’s elderly.  This sweet human is fighting for custody of the feline. Thank goodness the judge has a good head on his shoulders and has stated that  “Either this is worked out and we decide who is going to get custody of this cat … or medical records show this cat is in pain and suffering,.”

The nanny, , who cared for the couple’s two young children for years, said she took Tigger after she arrived for work on July 2 and learned they wanted to end his life. She left behind a note that read, “I can’t let this happen.” Well Tucker and Jasmine (the 16-year old Tribe siblings) say, paws up to this wonderful human!Paws Up award by FelineOpines.net for humans who do amazing things for cats

Cancer gel for cats and dogs is being developed in Tri-Cities. It could soon help people too

Isopet

Not only is this amazing news but it’s happening in the  Northwest, not so far from where we live.  This promising new cancer treatment developed in the Tri-Cities has been used on its first commercial patient — a long-haired cat named Drake.

Vivos Inc. of Richland has spent three years developing and testing a cancer-killing gel after licensing the technology from Battelle, which developed it at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland.

So far, it is being used at the company’s first pilot clinic for treating dogs and cats.

But the startup company’s goal is to eventually offer the treatment for human patients, injecting a high dose of radiation directly into a tumor without damage to healthy tissue.

“The technique we developed is exactly what we will use in humans — identical,” said Michael Korenko, Vivos chief executive officer. The treatment for Drake the feline decreased his tumor by 80%!

Pet owners interested in treatment now may fill out an application online at radiogel.com under IsoPet.

Zut a-claws! Stowaway cat’s 1,500-mile French road trip

Stowaway

There seem to be a lot of felines who end up on sightseeing excursions.

Eight-year old squish cat took a 1,500-mile road trip to the south of France after stowing away in her owners’ caravan. Her humans thought they’d left her at home but the day after they had crossed the Channel by ferry last month they were stunned to see her crawl out of a storage area as they ate their lunch.

The couple had to pay £500 to get her a rabies jab and a pet passport to ensure she could return to Britain legally. And Mr Brown had to stay on for an extra two weeks while the arrangements were being put in place.

After Squish’s humans jumped through all the necessary hoops to get her back home the trio had racked up about 1,500 miles by the time they arrived home.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 7/17

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hello There Furiends,
It’s been an eventful week. As those of you who follow my Wednesday wanderings know, things have been rather…err…exciting at our house. I thought I’d let each Tribe member bring you up to date.

final-58

Lily

I figured out that the dog can’t get on our cat tree so I climb to the very top and hide out until the offensive canine is gone. This is working very well for me as Oliver and Alberto (who enjoy chasing me around) can’t get to me either!

final-57

Oliver

Thankfully, meal time is not afffected by our canine visitor and best of all, The Female Human doesn’t have as much time to monitor my eating so it’s pretty much a win-win for this feline.

img_2351

Alberto

It’s been working out great for me. The Female Human allows me into Jasmine’s domain in the back of the house and I’m loving it. There are new things to explore and I can roam around back there without being bothered by the visiting canine.

final-56

Jasmine

My life used to be so serene and quiet and now I have to share my domain with that idiot, Alberto. He’s always hogging my toys and cat scratcher and trying to take The Female Human’s attention from me.

img_2350

Tucker

I’m still on meds but at least I’m not weaving and bobbing around the house. One good thing about this medication-nothing bothers me anymore, the visitors, the dog, even the vacuum monster. It’s all cool dude.

So as you can see, we are all coping with this change in our circumstances. As for the Female Human, she had her follow up with her regular doctor. It looks like the ulcer was caught early and she’s staying away from anything that can aggravate it (and she’s down to one medication). Unfortunately, the caffeine ban has made her a little ditsy and she’s not quite so perky in the morning.

So that’s the latest with us. How are you all doing? I hope you are doing well and that you enjoy my web wanderings this Wednesday.

Cat Lady Refined

CatFAshionista

Oh my whiskers, I’ve seen how some of you feline lovers dress and some of you could use a little fashion assistance. Well break out the catnip and sing the song of your people because CatFashionista.com is here! If you’re not sure if you are a cat fashionista here is the company’s definition: “You’re an unabashed cat lover and you’re not shy about it. You don’t keep the love for felines only in your heart. You wear it on your sleeve… Literally.  We hear you. Because you care about design, we’ve curated a collection of apparel and accessories that express your inner cat lady, while keeping your look chic. You’re a fiery, fearless, cat fashionista.”

Well, I don’t know about your humans but our human fits this bill purrfectly. As a  matter of fact we caught her purr-using the outfits on the site and she’s drooling over the blue velour jacket with “Cat Lady” embroidered on the back!

Indiana City Letting Residents Pay off Parking Tickets by Donating Cat Food to Local Shelter

CatParking

You know how I love when humans find creative ways to help felines and this is very creative. The good folks in Muncie, Indiana were very creative when they announced a new partnership aiming to help out their local shelter, which is currently home to over 350 cats and kittens in dire need of supplies.

For one week only, the police department allowed residents to pay off their parking tickets by donating cat supplies including litter and food to the shelter — no cash required.

“MACS has partnered with the Muncie Police Department with a wonderful program that allows people who have parking tickets to pay their tickets with cat/kitten food, litter, wet/pate canned food, beds, blankets, etc. in lieu of paying with money,” the post explained.

“We’re in dire need of supplies for the large volume of cats/kittens being cared for here at MACS, and they keep pouring in our doors,” the post continued. “We are incredibly grateful for the the support we receive from the community, and this is such a wonderful opportunity to help your local shelter.” Well done humans, well done!

More than 120 dogs, cats in path of Tropical Storm Barry in Louisiana are flown to safety

Storm

Paws up for the Humane Society who is always involved in getting shelter animals to safety before disasters. The Humane Society evacuated animals that were up for adoption in Louisiana shelters, which helps increase capacity for dogs and cats that may be displaced in the storm.

Ahead of Tropical Storm Barry making landfall along the Louisiana coast, more than 120 dogs and cats in the storm’s path were flown to safety. They were flown flown to Manassas in northern Virginia,t where they were taken to nearby shelters and prepared for adoption.

Meet Fiji, A Ship’s Cat

ShipCat

Did you know there are still ship’s cats? One made her appearance in Cleveland last weekend on board one of the 11 tall ships visiting there. Her name is Fiji and she’s been around the world twice, and she’s only four years old.

Fiji is the official ship cat of the Picton Castle. She often disembarks from the ship and explores ports of call as the ships travel around the world for the various festivals they take part in. She was adopted from an animal shelter in Fiji – hence the name – at just six weeks old.  Sometimes Fiji explores a little too far from the ship as she did in Buffalo, New York. She went on an extended shore leave but fortunately found by someone who googled her name and the name of her ship and managed to reunite her with her human shipmates.  The Picton Castle is a three-masted tall ship based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is sailing the Great Lakes during the summer, making port in several cities across North America.  Fiji (and her other feline crew mate) are listed with the rest of the human crew on the ship’s website.

Hotels are meow accommodating cats

HotelCats

I’ve reported on cat hotels and even hotels for humans that accept cats but now there are hotels that not only accept felines, they embrace us.

“We have the necessities when you’re traveling with a cat,” said Mark Hayes, manager of the Kimpton Aertson Hotel in Nashville. “A litter box comes with the room as well as a little bed for them and we put out some bowls for food and water. We don’t necessarily supply food but we’re happy to source anything locally. We know that cats can be pretty finicky with their diets, we kind of let the guests guide us in what they need. We also have toys available.”

Housekeeping will even scoop the litter box for you – meowza! And Kimpton hotels welcome feline guests for free. They began the cat program thinking they’d just provide litter boxes but then they noticed humans were arriving with their cats on leashes and in strollers and decided there was an opportunity to expand their feline services.  They now have litter boxes, toys, comfortable cat beds and the concierge is well versed in cat friendly businesses in the area and good places to walk your feline. Now, savvy businesses have sprung up around the cat friendly  hotel and even a cat cafe called Mewsic Kitty Cafe. There is no charge and no deposit for feline guests. (The Female Human is thinking about giving herself a little vacay and checking us all into a cat friendly hotel.)

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 7/3

siamese cat on a leash walking through a garden

Hey There Furiends,
It’s my web wandering Wednesday. I hope you enjoy the news I scratched out for you this week.

Before I present my stories, I thought I’d do a quick catch up. Things have been a little crazy in our house and our Purrsonal Assistant has been a bit distracted so her work product is not up to par (translation, she has not transcribed all our responses to our blog yet and we are mortified that this is taking her so long).  She also has some friends at our house. Very nice people but there is a bit of an issue with The Tribe regarding ONE of the visitors.

Here is how the conversation went:
final-48Female Human, “Al, we’re having some friends come to stay for a while. Very nice people. Oh, and they have a dog.”
Alberto, “Excuse me I thought you said they were bringing a dog.”
Female Human, “Thant’s right but she’s a sweet dog and you’ll love her.
Alberto , “You’ve got to be kitten me!”

I will report on more of this next week.

Another update. I featured a fantastic cat group in one of my recent Walk Through The Web Wednesdays called THIS CAT IS C H O N K Y  The Tribe of Five has been quite active in this group and we’ve learned some things about the fantastic people there. Absolutely NO shaming about anything is allowed. They are true cat lovers and many of them are dedicated to adopting older cats from shelters. Oh,  and these humans have a wicked sense of humor and are very creative. I can’t tell you how many times The Female Human has spit her coffee across the computer screen because she was laughing so hard at a post there.

final-49

She posted this photo of Oliver with the statement that he’d recently been put on a diet and feared starvation was imminent.  The comments were delightful and outright hysterical but these photoshopped pics were the best.

final-51final-50

Okay, I’ve digressed enough, on to the news items. I hope you enjoy them.

UI online survey aims to determine how face shape affects cats’ health

CatFaces

University of Illinois researchers are asking cat owners to participate in on online survey to determine whether cats’ face shapes are associated with certain health and wellness characteristics. They are purrticularily interested in finding out if brachycephalic cats — the breeds with flat, squishy faces  experience breathing issues similar to those of squishy-faced dogs.  So if you are a squishy faced feline, have your human wander on over to take the survey and help these folks out.

FELINE FANS DESCEND ON SOCAL’S ANNUAL CATCON TO CELEBRATE OUR FURRY FRIENDS!

Cat

One of the biggest feline events in the country, CatCon LA made a big splash again last weekend. One of the top feline photographers, Erica Danger, was there to capture every beautiful feline at the purrfect moment. A Kat Von D beauty bar was set up to teach everyone how to get the perfect cat eye. – Apryl Triana, a Phoenix, AZ-based tattoo artist was there providing cat tats and there were many, many more cool feline related booths. There were lots of cat-loving celebrities and best of all, Best Friends Animal Society had an adoption village for felines to find furever homes.  I must insist that The Female Human attends next year!

AI Keeps Cats And Their Kill Out of The House

AICatDoor

Who says automation and AI is useless when it comes to cats? Not Ben Hamm,  an engineer at Amazon who , noticed his cat often brought dead animals back to the house as a ‘gift.’ It wasn’t that he wasn’t thankful for the presents but it just was unpleasant  to wake up to a dead rat. So he decided to explore AI  and built a model that would lock the cat door when his pet tried to bringing a dead animal with it. Now the article has a lot of geek speak to explain how it works and if  you like that kind of stuff  you can read more and watch the video.  Hamm says the prototype is working well, only locking the cat out once when it shouldn’t. He gets texts with photos of his cat. Pretty cool, who’d have thought I’d be reporting on AI and cats in the same article?

19 Cat Myths That Need to Go

final-52

“You humans believe some of the dumbest things about felines. We need to talk.” Lily

You humans believe some of the silliest things about us and some of the things you believe can be downright harmful to us felines. Like the belief that cats can be vegans, no, no and NO! Now The Tribe enjoys a gnosh on some wheat grass now and then but we are obligate carnivores. We NEED meat.

And then there’s the misconception that you should get a cat because we are so low-maintenance. You can leave us alone over the weekend.  Uh NOPE, we like companionship and even though we are all different purrsonalities, we miss you when you’re gone.

And then there’s the “cats always land on their feet” myth. Unless we don’t. Yes we can twist in midair to position ourselves to land feet first, there are times when we, just like the best Olympic gymnast, don’t stick our landing.

You can read the other 16 myths in the article just to be sure you’re not believing some old wives tale about your felines.

Walk Through The Web Wednesday 6/26

Hello There Furiends,
Alberto here with my weekly web wanderings. Not too much to report from The Tribe this week. I can report that Lily and Tucker have been living on the edge lately.

Feline Chair is Purrfect

CatChair

Once again our friends across the pond show their great love of felines. This chair is cat-specific and even comes with a cover that can be changed and washed in case it gets a bit furry. Now the people that wrote this article said that the chair would be a substitute for a human’s lap…clearly that writer does not know felines. At a price of 12.99GBP (about $16.48 US) the chair is a steal. I expect to see Moggies all over the British Isles lounging in one of these soon.

Good Grief! Step Away From The Washing Machine!

WsashingmachineCat

This is a cautionary tale for all my feline friends and their humans. Recently, a human who is in the habit of checking the laundry in her washing machine to make sure none of her three cats have crawled inside, thought she’d done her due diligence and hit the “wash” button.

Thirty five minutes later when the cycle was done she checked the washing and saw a white paw.

One year old Felix had found his way into the washer. She rushed him to her veterinary hospital. Poor guy had lost his vision and had pneumonia from the amount of water in his lungs, he did survive and is doing better now — he can see and has started eating. He’s still on oxygen. The vet has assured Felix’s human that Felix will make a full recovery but the human can’t forgive herself. People, check your laundry carefully! And thank goodness Felix will be okay.

Car Shows Are For Cats Too

CatCArShow

Car shows are not just for humans, evidently they’re for cats too. Boost, the cat, has been attending car shows since she was a kitten and she’s now stealing the show wherever she goes. How do her humans know she enjoys these shows? Her human sayus, “I can dangle the keys and she’ll come running”.

And Boost is not the only feline at these car shows. You can often see Cal, a one year old Sphynx there too. Cal often wears costumes to the shows.

Lil BUB’s Birthday Party Has Us Feelin’ Feline

junelilbubbirthday

Lil Bub celebrates her birthday by doing good for homeless cats.

OK, full disclosure, when it comes to Lil Bub, I’m a fanboy. And my favorite feline starlet did not disappoint on her eighth birthday last weekend. She held a fund raiser at the Corey Helford Gallery in downtown Los Angeles for The Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats.

Lil BUB had a meet & greet, with celebrities like Jackson Galaxy and Hannah Shaw. They had party games, a bounce house, a magic show, and, of course a birthday cake. Thank you Lil Bub for using your birthday to do good things for kitties who need furever homes.

The 25 Most Cat-Friendly Cities in the U.S.

FriendliestCatCities

Dear humans, if you’re planning a move to a new city, please purruse this list of cat-friendly cities before you make your plans.

The top 25 were selected by research into cities offered the most cat-centered services and which cities had the most cat-friendly homes available for purchase. Trupanion (a pet insurance company) and Redfin (a real estate brokerage) teamed up to research this list

Trupanion analyzed the cat-centered services — perks like cat clinics, shelters and hospitals — and took note of which cities were natural homes to plants that are toxic to felines. Redfin contributed to the analysis by looking at the number of cat-friendly homes — abodes with high ceilings, litter box space and patios — available in each of the cities.

The city that topped the list, based on these factors, was Corvallis, Oregon. I’ve included the full list below.

I am proud to say that the Spokane, WA, a city about two hours away from where The Tribe of Five lives is #2. I need to get The Female Human out and about in Spokane to see what’s going on!
